The home that you are previewing is the second oldest homestead on the island. Thoroughly renovated in 2007, the home's history has been preserved. Partially constructed from reclaimed ships timbers dating from the 18th century and complemented with materials that reflect an island vernacular this home is a favorite of return guests. Additional updates include all new wiring, plumbing and heating system. We have also installed central AC. Although you may prefer the ocean breezes, having central AC on very humid evenings may be quite welcome. A brand-new kitchen featuring a gas range, microwave oven, dishwasher and refrigerator allow you to cook up a feast of seafood while here. One and a half bathrooms as well as an outdoor shower reduce the wait for a bathroom if you are sharing the home with others.
Two bedrooms, one with Queen bed the other with two twin beds are on opposite sides of the home. Additional sleeping can be found on the full-sized sofa. A front-loading washer/dryer complete the appliance package.
Additional amenities include 27" LCD HDTV, Surround Sound and high-speed wireless internet access. We also have a variety of games and books for your enjoyment.

A little information about the area:
West Island is one of the South Coast's best kept secrets. Located in Buzzard's bay, this small residential-only Island offers the visitor and resident peace and quiet or access to any number of action-packed pursuits.
Over half the island is State Conservation land offering many nature trails, wildlife viewing and truly impressive vistas. There are several choices for ocean access; the protected water (bayside) beach or the Buzzard's Bay beach (voted the #3 town beach in all of New England).
Originally farmland, the past two centuries have seen West Island gradually change to a vacation destination for locals who know what a gem they have so close to home. It is not uncommon to meet others during your stay who have been vacationing here for decades or who's family has owned the same home for nearly a century.
While maintaining its charm, West Island has also kept pace with technology. City Water and Sewer, high-speed internet, satellite television are just some of the amenities you will find while on our island.
Within 4 miles you will find two large supermarket chains, department stores as well as other well-known chain establishments. West Island is a mere 60 minutes from Boston, 45 minutes from Newport and under half an hour from the Bourne or Sagamore bridges.
This is an actual review by a renter:
Our family of 3 just returned from a wonderful week stay – it was idyllic and quiet in an up-dated cozy clean cottage with coastal personality, a place where you can set your own pace and be at ease – a terrific vacation or get-away solution.
The owners are conscientious yet realistic in the care and thought put into their home and yard. Daily family operations are easy with state of the art appliances and many stores and restaurant choices near by, but not too near. We were very comfortable hanging out, and felt very safe with open doors and coming and going to the local beach or for one of many local walks and bike rides. We let our 13 year old bike solo on the island to explore – can you tell we’re from the city?
Our rainy day plans for the New Bedford art galleries and Whaling Museum never transpired - we were too happy on island (and it never rained!). But there is plenty to do close by with Westport, the winery and Horseneck beach, Dartmouth and shopping, and a tour of the town of Fairhaven should one need diversions.
We made great use of the fenced landscaped yard and deck for meals and many games, and kept up with work and emails via the wireless connection. The beds were perfect and the outdoor shower a plus. We hope to return and enjoy the south coast light, and changing seasons.

We stayed at Blue Moon for a week while visiting the Boston area and loved it! This cottage is very quaint and comes with everything you would need for a comfortable stay. Everything was very clean and in working condition. The beds and bedding offered a comfortable night's sleep. Fairhaven has wonderful water views and gives a private setting with its small community. This location is a bit off the beaten path but a manageable distance to many tourist locations with a rental car. We loved our stay and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in visiting this area!
Owner response:We are so glad you enjoyed your stay on West Island. We are off the beaten path which is what many of our guests love, but having a bit of civilization just a 10 minute drive away is comforting to those who need that infrastructure. We hope you will come back to Blue Moon and visit us again.

Blue Moon provided more than a clean, well-appointed, comfortable home-away-from-home. Blue Moon is integral to the fabric of fond memories when friends and family gathered to celebrate Mom’s 80th birthday and our parent’s 52nd Wedding Anniversary. The descriptions and pictures are accurate and show the thoughtful attention to detail and comforts we enjoyed during our vacation. Thank you for all you have done to create this gem on lovely West Island. While perfect for couples, families and friends I would also recommend Blue Moon and West Island for the individual traveler. This oasis offers peace, security, comfort, and solitude without a sense of abandonment. It is a place to unwind, contemplate, create, and refresh.
Owner response:We are delighted that you found Blue Moon to be a comfortable home to celebrate your family's special occasions. We hope to have you visit West Island again for the 81st birthday celebrations as well. Thank you for your review.

What a lovely cottage!! Our overall experience was the best due to all the great amenities........it was great not having to lug all our own linens and to have a washer/dryer was wonderful not to mention AC, WiFi, cable, surround sound and all the other things. The cottage itself is just beautiful with it's history and the fabulous attention to art work and decorating......PERFECT!!
Owner response:We are so pleased you were able to stay at Blue Moon. We hope it made for a great launching off point for all your Southcoast festivities. Please join us again next year.

This was our first real vacation since the divorce. We couldn't have picked a better place. The house was amazing, relaxing, beautiful. It was like staying in a house from the pages of costal living. It is so close to our favorite beach spots, we barely used the car. My three children and I sometimes had trouble tearing ourselves away from the house and yard to go to the beach! Howe and Tim have made this property such a wonderful place to stay. I never felt like I was staying in a small house. The way space is utilized, it feels open and spacious and breezy! It is the first house I have EVER been in that I wouldn't change a single thing about it. We made puzzles on the big table in the kitchen, and ate big meals with visitng realtives there too. On the deck, we ate, talked, laughed, listened to music from the great sound system. In my bedroom, I felt like I never wanted to leave the bed. At night, I lay in bed, and enjoyed the ocean air, and watched the full moon complete its arc across the night sky through the open french doors. My children, who usually have to be bribed to bathe at home, fought to be first to use the spacious shower with a luxrious shower head. Howe and Tim took care of everything we needed (and we needed a lot!) and made us feel like friends whenever we ran into them on the island. We can't wait to come back!
Owner response:We were so pleased to have your family come and enjoy Blue Moon. It is a place we hope all guests find comfortable and peaceful. We hope you can join us next year and again fill Blue Moon with your positive spirit.

Always a good sign when you get the text from the discerning teenager...Mom, you're going to LOVE this place!!! And we most definitely did. From the beautifully landscaped private backyard complete with hammock, new gas grill, shed for bikes and outdoor shower (nice!) to the house that is out of a magazine beautiful. The owner is an interior designer and everything is high end and luxurious. The cottage is furnished with beautiful antiques and artwork, down pillows, fine linen, you name it. It's comparable to a 5-star hotel. It's well laid out and the high ceilings make it seem larger than you expect. The family neighborhood is safe and easy to bike from woods to the beach. Beaches were quiet so kids were anxious to take day trips to the Cape and Narragansett beaches - easy drive and worth it for the variety. Our kids would walk or bike to the causeway and explore the island each night while we prepared dinner. We loved it. You will too.
Owner response:We thank you for your feedback and very much enjoyed having you visit Blue Moon and West Island. During your stay, our WiFi was not working properly and you were most understanding about that. Instead of complaining about it, your response was most refreshing; "we shouldn't be using a computer on vacation..." Nonetheless, we want to make sure everyone has a wonderful (and productive) visit, so we have replaced our router so those issues won't be a problem for other visitors. Hurry back to West Island and have a wonderful summer.

Blue Moon was a lovely place for our family (parents, kids age 11 and 14 plus our beagle) to spend a week. Very, very clean inside and well-maintained outside. The house is very tastefully decorated, furniture was comfortable, and it didn't seem small because the space was so well-thought-out. Plenty of storage in bathrooms. Outdoor shower was terrific. Extra refrigerator and washer/dryer in basement were appreciated. Fenced yard has a nice-sized deck with picnic table, hammock, beautiful hydrangeas and other plantings; what a great spot to relax. Plenty of clothesline space for wet towels and swimsuits. There are two small free beaches you can walk to in 5 minutes or less, with a larger one a 4 minute drive ($6/day for parking, free after 3:30 or so in the afternoon). Beaches have a lot of seaweed and stones, so water shoes are a plus. Less than 10 minute drive to two nice supermarkets, liquor store, Walmart, etc. Great pizza at Yia-Yia's on the road onto West Island. We took day trips to Newport (little over an hour) and Boston (about 1 hour 20 mins.); both were easy trips with mostly interstate driving. Two minor items that bothered me but might not trouble others: The TV only gets about 8 stations (excluding shopping channels) and none of them are sports. Also, the beds are very, very firm. Overall, Blue Moon is a very pretty, obviously well-cared-for property with a lot of nearby amenities.
Owner response:Thank you so much for your review. We will definitely consider adding some channels to the channel lineup, particularly sports channels. We can also have available padded mattress pads to soften the beds a bit. Again, thank you and we hope to have you visit the Island again sometime.

I thoroughly enjoyed my week-long stay at Blue Moon. I had chosen to stay in this charming cottage based on the photographs and description, which were entirely accurate. It is a charming century old cottage, very tastefully decorated, with a comfortable fenced-in yard (which my dog loved) on a quiet street, within a reasonable walk to the beach. West Island has the feel of a laid back seaside community from the 1960s or 1970s. It is so safe and quiet, a wonderful base from which to explore the southern coast of Massachusetts and parts of Rhode Island, or just chill. There are several protected reserves for hiking and exploring all along the "fjords" in the region, as well as charming towns where you can lunch and shop. Do not miss the Whaling Museum in New Bedford -- which is about a 15 minute drive away. I cannot say enough about the helpfulness of Howe and Tim. Not only did they have good tips for local sites and restaurants, they also went above and beyond the call when, on the morning that I was scheduled to check out, I had car trouble. They called a local mechanic, looked under my car and even conferred with the Triple A guy to assess the safety of my drive! All in all, a delightful and relaxing stay in a charming cottage on a peaceful island.
Owner response:We were of course delighted to have you and Augie as our guests. If your travels find you near West Island again, it would be our delight to have you as a guest again.

We stayed at Blue Moon this past June and had a wonderful experience. The house is very neat, well maintained and clean, and Howe provides great service and is very responsive. There are a number of beaches and fishing spots close to the house, but more importantly, it is very centrally located if you want to do day trips to Newport, Cape Cod, Horseneck Beach, Boston or even Martha's Vinyard using the fast ferry departing from New Bedford. Great value for your buck. Would return anytime!
Owner response:We were so glad to have you visit Blue Moon. We hope you will come back and visit. The bike helmets you accidentally left, will be here waiting for you. Thanks again for visiting West Island.
