Hope Hobart’s House C. 1860
We always think of the house as Hope Hobart’s house, although it is not recognizable to anyone, still alive, who would have visited Hope when she lived there. Somehow we thought her father was a ship builder (romantic) but he and Mr. Pettingill ran a general store. A possible ancestor Col.Josia Hobart was granted, after the war of revolution, all of down east Maine.
Situated on the landside of Pemequan River, the house faces east and enjoys a long sun filled day till about 4pm. The river has two functions. It’s shallow in spring/summer and a swimming beach (child size) is just down the road. The other puzzles people” from away”, as the tide comes up the river according to the moon phase. That is sometime no tide at all and, other times the tide rises slowly till the river looks like a bay and is three or four feet deep and spectacular.
Currently the house has been simplified. The first floor is open, with a living room on one half with a couch(that opens to a futon) chairs of a variety and an in bad shape piano, and a kitchen/dining area on the other half. A modern refrigerator, an older electric stove, and two wood stoves, one for heat and miniature cook stove. The second floor has three bedrooms, two with double beds, one with twin beds. Bath tub/shower and a modern clothes washer (clothes come out near dry, and an hour hang up usually does the rest) and toilet comprise the bathroom.
Bring your bike, boat, binoculars and you will find plenty to do. Or just laze-around. Shopping is 20-30 miles away depending; restaurants the same. Four churches in town, two gas stations with groceries and take out, and a post office. |
