Come enjoy classic mountain charm in this 1930's-era vintage Estes Park cabin hideaway, updated with all amenities and wonderful cabin furnishings. Nestled among pine and aspen trees at 7500', with mountain views and rock outcroppings all around, the Shawnee is located 1.5 miles west of downtown Estes Park and approximately two miles east of Rocky Mountain National Park. This non-smoking log cabin has a warm knotty pine interior and is spotless, with lots of character. The wood-burning fireplace is the focal point of the living room, adding a cozy touch on those chilly evenings. Enjoy a good night's sleep on our quality mattresses in the two bedrooms, each with a dresser and closet, and a futon in the living room.
The kitchen is inviting with lots of windows - and great for enjoying the many mule deer and elk that often wander through the area, as well as the birds that come to our feeders. Cabinets are thoroughly stocked for your convenience. The bathroom has a large shower. We also have a picnic table and barbecue grill in the back yard. The south-facing deck is a perfect spot to relax with a cup of your favorite beverage.
Our guests have commented "Comfortable and inviting, it is the nicest cabin we have been in," and "This was by far the most comfortable and homey cabin we've ever stayed at in Estes Park."
In the summer, there are endless hiking trails to explore in Rocky Mountain National Park -Alberta Falls, Nymph Lake & Dream Lake are some of our favorites. Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved highway in the United States, climbs to 12,183 feet in the park. Exhibits and rangers at the Visitor Center explain life on this alpine tundra.
There is also a paved 4 mile bike/walking trail around Lake Estes, where there's a marina and small swimming beach. Paddleboats and kayaks are available for rent. Enjoy the bumper boats, go-carts, an aerial tramway, big slide, and bumper cars. As for other activities, there is golf, miniature golf and songs & stories around a campfire at Bond Park.
In the fall, the aspen leaves turn gold and the elk rut and bugle- a favorite among visitors. The Scottish/Irish festival (largest in the country) is held in early September.
Horseback riding, indoor climbing wall and two movie theaters are other popular year-round activities. The YMCA of the Rockies has a room for making all kinds of crafts (pottery, silk-screen, basket weaving, etc) for reasonable prices with staff to help you out.
In town there is shopping and dining galore (Mary's Lake Lodge-a few miles outside of downtown-is a must!), the historic Stanley Hotel, concerts, rodeos, horse shows, craft fairs, art shows, the woolen market, a Scandinavian festival and many other special events.
Many come for the holiday festivities in November and December, along with sledding and ice skating throughout the winter. Hiking trails are accessible year-round, but snowshoeing is also a choice on the higher trails in the winter months, including the newly reopened Hidden Valley, where there is snowboarding and backcountry skiing as well. The deer and elk are even more plentiful in town during the cooler months, preferring to be higher up in the park during summer. The Eldora downhill ski area is just a 45 minute drive away.
Here is the perfect place for a vacation (or holiday)getaway to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Rocky Mountains. |
