Accommodations:  Cottage, 5 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2 Baths (Sleeps 14-16)

Keywords:  Cottage

This two story secluded cottage located next door to Holbrook Island Sanctuary sits high over the water in Smith's Cove on Cape Rosier where sail boats are often seen dropping anchor. Views from almost all of the windows look out over the cove and as far away as Castine and beyond. A steep path takes you down to a gravel/sand beach for shell collecting or launching a kayak. Pets are welcome.

The Piper's Nest was built by our mother to bring her 5 children and their families together. When we are not using it we rent it out for others to enjoy. It is the perfect place for large or small groups. Children will love the bunk room. One of the bedrooms is located on the main floor, the other 4 are upstairs. There is a full bath up and down. We recently added a furnace to provide heat for chilly mornings and evenings. The large, fully stocked kitchen is perfect for food lovers. At low tide you can paddle out to gather mussels for dinner. In season you can search out wild blueberries for your pancakes.

The main room opens out onto a large screened porch for enjoying morning coffee, afternoon naps, playing games or eating meals at the large table. On rainy days our collection of puzzles, games, videos and books will keep you busy. Two TVs, a VCR and a DVD player allow for dual viewings in separate areas.

Smiths Cove is great for kayaking because it is protected from wind and ocean swells. A short paddle at low tide takes you by the rocks where harbor seals bask in the sun. A hammock swings gently behind the house where you will also find a picnic table and a flat grassy area perfect for badminton. Biking around Cape Rosier or walking the many Holbrook Island Sanctuary trails are favorite pastimes. Drive 30 minutes or less into Blue Hill or Stonington for some sightseeing/shopping. Acadia and Bar Harbor are an hours drive away and make for a great day trip. Kayak and bike rentals are available in nearby towns.

Tranquility in Maine during summer

What a perfect rustic place to get away from it all. Much of Maine in summer seems like a sea of tourists but you would be completely oblivious to this at Piper's Nest. The Cape Rosier peninsula and the surrounding attractions, especially Castine (cute golf course), but also Stonington and Blue Hill were wonderful. I would recommend taking the ferry to Isle au Haut (Part of Acadia National Park) rather than go to Acadia proper, which is a zoo in summer! Great restaurants dotted about and I ate more lobster roll than I care to mention. Little quayside fish shack at Castine had best fresh fish and chips also! There are loads of jigsaw puzzles (I did 4) and games to play and an enormous library for those rainy days. A BBQ grill out the back was essential and the farmer's markets in every town on different days are a must. Also a nice organic farm on the Cape Rosier peninsula. Kids loved swimming in bay below the house but bring slipon water shoes. There were 8 of us and everybody slept comfortably. If you are into running, there are lots of different running routes, with a route around the peninsula around 11 miles.

WOW! What a fantastic vacation. We spent my mom and dad's 60th wedding anniversary here and gathered family together in this safe heaven to relax, rejuvinate, and rekindle. Perched in the tree tops, with incredible views of the ocean below- in a bay calm enough to kayak leisurely in and sit on the deck and watch the tall ships go by. My son saw a seal while out kayaking one morning and we spent enjoyable early morning strolls on the pebble beach in the morning when the tide was out- beachcombing and exploring. Quiet- was it ever- as I sat having coffee in the morning on the deck I could hear the flapping of the birds wings around me. In the afternoon, with some relaxing in the hammock, others played volleyball near by, while laughter could be heard from the kitchen as the preparations for the evening feast began (the kitchen has all the utensils could ever need) The evenings aound the fire after a dinner around that wonderful large inviting table will long be treasured memories- Thank you!

My family has been visiting the Piper's Nest for the past 12 years. The Nest is located on the shore of Smith's Cove tucked away from everything. It is TRULY a slice of heaven on earth. Castine is a short paddle across the water for some wonderful micro brews and a great restaurant, Dennett's Wharf. Historic Blue Hill is only a short drive, as is Buck's Harbor (the original site for the book One Morning in Maine). Safe and easy kayaking out toward Sheep's Island offers the opportunity to float among the harbor seals (they actually FOLLOW you)! Piper's Nest is a wonderful family destination if you are thinking of visiting Maine...it's the BEST of Down East!!
