Great stay - just what we were looking for!

Guest: Murphclan (United States)
Date of Stay: 03/26/12 Review Submitted: 04/19/12

We had a great stay at Dukes! What a location!! We were greeted by turtles in the morning and enjoyed the glorious sunsets in the evening. There were plenty of amenities making the stay comfortable and convenient. While the decor is not current, we found the rooms to be very clean and comfortable...and we did not come to Hawai'i to stay in our room, anyway! Awesome location, comfortable and clean. We look forward to our next stay.

An island getaway: hawaii time only

Guest: barbara and daniel (Anchorage)
Date of Stay: 02/24/12 Review Submitted: 03/08/12

This was a marvelous beach cottage, "down home" enough to fully relax, with lots of indoor and outdoor space to roam, share and hang out. The location could not be more convenient to our favorite beaches; the Puako (general) store a quick walk away. No hustle and bustle. Perfect sunset views such that by the end of the week we'd get settled out by the shore VERY early. Never were we disappointed either. Duke keeps everything in working order and it was simple to arrange what we wanted. Go again? Tomorrow?

Cheap Motel

Guest: Doc Tom (Sparks, NV)
Date of Stay: 02/17/12 Review Submitted: 03/16/12

This rental was dirty and outdated by 40 years. I saw a cockroach in the kitchen the first day and was quite entertained watching the mouse get into the trash can and jump up on the countertop in the kitchen. We also did not feel comfortable walking around the house in our bare feet for obvious reasons. Simply stated, this home needs a major overhaul! We had to leave early and I thank Duke for giving us a refund.

Owner response:SORRY!For you choosing this rental. Hope you weren't influence by my previous reviews! It was unnecessary for you to post this review! You stayed for 6 nights and I give you a refund. BTW This is HAWAII we have roaches & rodents.SORRY AND ALOHA

You can't find a more finer location for a beach rental than this one. Just steps to the tide pools and ocean surf...with honu's (turtle's) sunbathing within steps of you, and numerous whale sightings aplenty (even from inside the studio). From spectacular sunsets with the sun sinking into the sea, to our own (almost) private beach with numerous chaise lounge chairs, barbeques, picnic tables, lanai, hammock, coconut trees, and even an outdoor shower. Only a five minute walk to the general store comes in handy. Only a few miles to a larger grocery market and shops at Mauna Lani, and just south of there is the massive Hilton with the King and Queens shopping areas. Located between the resorts of Mauna Lani and Hapana Beach Prince Hotel, on Puako Beach Road, this vacation spot is a hidden gem you won't want to miss out on. Less than 30 minutes from the airport. So very close to public beach 69 (less than 2 miles), and of course the many resort beaches as well. About a mile south is a little public beach area for some diving, snorkeling and surfing. An older property that has been in the family for decades. Duke and his wife Miriam live above the studio and are hardly noticed, but they are there for advice and assistance if needed. The studio seems larger than the pictures show and with the lanai it gives even more room. The 2 bedroom house next door is very large and will accomodate many. We highly recommend these rentals for anyone who wants privacy in paradise without the glamour and expense of the resorts. Thanks again. We hope to return again someday.

Good Living in Puako

Guest: Marilyn & Peter (Carbondale, CO)
Date of Stay: 01/19/12 Review Submitted: 03/28/12

At last we returned to Duke's place for the second time! Stayed there for three weeks of our month long trip to the Big Island. Once again we enjoyed every morning on the lanai, drinking Kona coffee and watching whales spout. Couldn't find a better location on the Kohala Coast for easy access to all of the public beaches plus the luxury of having your own private spot to relax in at any time. Duke and his family continue to be gracious hosts with plenty of the aloha spirit. Can't wait for our next visit!

Incredible rental for family!

Guest: family of 6 (Baxter, MN)
Date of Stay: 01/19/12 Review Submitted: 02/08/12

Our family, 2 adults and 4 young children, stayed in the 2 bed/2 bath rental and loved it! It was plenty spacious, clean, and provided a fun atmosphere for the kids. The beach & oceanfront are amazing. Lots of tidepools for the kids to explore in. We saw turtles everyday, and really enjoyed watching the whales everyday as we sat on the lava rock. The rental is well-maintained and filled with all the necessities. The owner, Duke, was an outstanding host. He is very friendly and helpful, and lives on-site if you need anything. Even when he was not on-site, one phone call and he had the wi-fi working in less than 5 minutes. The general store is cute and close by, and is well stocked with anything you may need. We cannot wait to go back someday! We highly recommend this property!

Puako paradise

Date of Stay: 01/12/12 Review Submitted: 01/22/12

We loved our stay here. We totaled 6 adults and 1 child and it was the perfect place for our family to spread out and enjoy the area. The pictures do not do it justice. The back yard is especially wonderful. We enjoyed watching whales and the surf from the lounge chairs, being able to easily choose if we wanted a spot in the sun or shade. The tide pools were awesome to explore and we loved watching the turtles. It is also nice that the place is only about a 3 minute walk to the general store. Duke is a great host, he was available if we had questions, but left us to ourselves. There are bikes and all kinds of beach gear too. Puako is the perfect place if you're looking to get away from the big resorts, but still want access to wonderful beaches and lots of sunshine.

Great location!

Guest: John52 (Denver, Colorado)
Date of Stay: 12/25/11 Review Submitted: 01/17/12

Our extended family rented both units (main floor and studio) for a lovely week between Christmas and New Years. The location was fantastic; from the studio we fell asleep every night listening to the waves. We barbequed on the grill a couple of evenings; watched the sunset and fireworks from the lawn chairs and enjoyed the mornings on the front porch. The units are a bit rustic and could probably use a coat of paint, but you cannot beat the location and setting. The kitchens were well equipped and plenty of linens, beach towels, etc. were provided.

Wow, I finally found it!! Just a little hunk of Paradise.Away from the Madness, the hotels, condos, and all that stuff. We stayed in the studio, which is great for two, and a youngster. We surprised our Grandson (lives in Kamuela), for his 13th Birthday. Had him with us for 9 days. Fish & Steaks on the bbq, breakfast, sunsets, dipping in the tide pools, with the Turtles just a few feet away. just can"t get any better. Duke is a Great Host, and is so helpful and full of information. This is an older property that has been in the same family for quite a while. Don't expect luxury, it's a neat laid back place, like sharing a friends home. If you like, its just minutes from the Mauna Kea, Fairmount Orchid and Waikaloa Resorts, and only 30 minutes from the airport. Can't wait to get back. MAHALO DUKE, for a Special stay.

We had a great stay at Dukes. Comfortable, homey, private (even thought his family live on site we never even heard them), clean, beautiful view, pebble beach front yard, and economical. It's between two public entrances to the ocean, has 5 resident turtles right in front of it in the tide pools. Puako speaks for it's self but you know what they say about location, location, location. I felt great about spending my money and time there and will be back:) Thanks to Duke and family for sharing, Charsty

Frequent Puako Visitors Think This Place Was Great

Guest: Dave (Lewiston, ID)
Date of Stay: 11/09/11 Review Submitted: 12/13/11

Great place, right on the water. We (four adults) stayed in the two bedroom part and it was much larger than what we expected from the photos. The location is perfect and a huge bargain compared to other ocean front locations in Puako. Duke was a great host; didn't know he was around unless we had a special question or two - a really nice guy. For our stay, Duke's place was perfect.

Relaxing and Wonderful!

Guest: Rindy (Poway, CA )
Date of Stay: 07/11/11 Review Submitted: 07/22/11

Our family of six fell in love with Hawaii and staying at the 2+ bedrm house. My boys, 6, 8 and 15yo spent endless hours in the tide pools or snorkeling the reefs. Each day they would find a new surprise. These are some of the best natural and untouched tide pools I have seen in a long time! Duke was so friendly and an incredible host. The afternoon fruit was a treat (and gobbled down by my boys immediately!). The selling point of staying here for us was 1) my boys were constantly entertained with the beach which allowed me (and my mom) to relax 2) it was very private – we would only see a few other locals walking by on the beach a day (if that!) 3) my husband and I listened to the ocean all nite and opened our eyes to an amazing sunrise 4) the sunsets were amazing from your own backyard and 5) it was by some really great (not so crowded) sandy beaches. Oh yes, and 6) my husband and 15 yo who got scuba certified while we were here– said the location for diving right where the house is AMAZING. This was definitely one of our more relaxing vacations we have had in a long time. Thank you Duke for your hospitality. We hope to come back soon!

Review limited to 2500 characters, not enough to do justice to this exceptional and unique property

Guest: elise (cooper city, fl)
Date of Stay: 07/02/11 Review Submitted: 07/12/11

This property is the best kept secret on the big island. We are happy to add another great review to the long list of great reviews that convinced us to stay here. The home is truly ocean front, located on charming Puako Drive, which winds along the edge of the ocean. You have an authentic "real Hawaii" feel, yet restaurants/shopping are nearby. You are right on the ocean, with tide pools, turtles, lava rocks, sand, picnic tables and lawn chairs right outside your door, and the expansive ocean view is easily seen from well inside the home. The view is much more spectacular than you can tell looking at the above picture. Outside, you can see all the way up northern Kohala coast, and usually you can see Maui. We enjoyed spectacular sunsets every evening and starry skies every night. Our daughters enjoyed their "pool" when the tide was high and filled a little sandy area for them to splash around in. Our little one loved the small tide pools. It is difficult to be this close to the ocean without breaking the bank; this lovely property makes it possible. Our family of 6 were comfortable in the 2-bedroom unit, plenty of space for us. We put our teen-age son in the masterbedroom in the back of the home, husband and I opted for the ocean front bedroom with the queen-size bed, so we could see the ocean as soon as we opened our eyes. Heaven! This older property is cared for with pride by our exceptional hosts, Duke & Miriam, who were always available for questions and advice, sometimes surprised us with thoughtful food offerings, but never imposed on our privacy. Very nice people! Regarding snorkeling, the reef seems endless, teeming with a variety of colorful marine life including corals, colorful fish, and turtles. We have snorkeled many popular spots in the islands and nothing comes close to this. This is not a touristy area, so you have the entire ocean to yourself. It is serene and other-worldly. For easy entry, just a very short walk up the road, there is public access. Just swim straight out with your snorkel and be amazed! Our favorite beach, 69, is a very short drive away. It offers plenty of sand, sun, shade, swimming and snorkeling. We enjoyed a couple of day-trips, to the top of Mauna Kea, and to the east side of the island via saddle road, coming back on the upper road. The changes in landscape on this drive are stunning. We are very happy to have finally found the perfect place to stay on the Big Island. We will be back!

Owner response:ALOHA Elise, Thank you for your great review. Your review is very important to us! MAHALO & ALOHA DUKE & MIRIAM

My wife and I and 5 grown children rented the 2 bed 2 bath portion of the house and we were very comfortable (you have to get along well). The photos do not do the place justice. Just a few steps from the ocean out the back door. Nothing to spoil the view. We slept with only the sound of the ocean. What a treat. We were able to see lots of whales, nearly every time we sat and watched for any length of time. Also loved walking around the tide pools right outside our door. Lots of sea turtles came very near to us. This was our first visit to this house but it will not be our last.

Dream location!

Guest: Hall/Stults Family (Oregon)
Date of Stay: 01/28/11 Review Submitted: 02/11/11

We are already dreaming of our next visit to Duke's home in Puako. For our family who loves the simple Hawaiian experience this was the perfect location for us. The best beaches on the island are just minutes away where we spent most of our days boogie boarding, swimming, and snorkeling. We loved coming back to the house to watch the whales and sunsets while BBQing in the back yard, which would sometimes be shared by the turtles. Duke and his family are so quiet that we rarely knew they were there except that Duke would sometimes come down to share some great local knowledge. I would and will recommend this place to anyone who is looking to get away from the hubbub of town and fancy condos, and have a country experience in old Hawaii. We used to talk about exploring other islands but now that we have stayed at this oceanfront location we have all decided this is the only place we ever want to stay. Thank you Duke for sharing your home and hospitality, it made our stay our families best vacation ever.

Everything you need to enjoy a true Hawaiian vacation. Adequate accommodations, great hospitality, wonderful setting on the water, close to some of the best beaches on the island, enjoyable running along neighborhood streets, reasonably priced country store just down the road - this place is perfectly located with everything we were looking for. If you want to get away from the resort scene and enjoy Hawaii, this place is for you.

Great location right on the water. We watched whales, turtles, and sunsets from our oceanfront lounge chairs. BBQ and picnic tables outside made for pleasant dinners. We snorkeled in front of the house and enjoyed the many beaches within a close drive. The Puako general store is a 5 minute walk away. Duke is a great host. I highly recommend this rental.

Date of Stay: 10/09/10 Review Submitted: 11/01/10

Isn’t that what they say about real estate? Well you could not beat this place for location. From watching the moon set at night on the ocean to watching the sun set in the evening. In between there was turtle watching, snorkeling, barbecuing and just relaxing and listening to the sounds of the waves as they broke over the lava. And Duke and Miriam were the perfect hosts – available when you had a question and invisible the rest of the time. The 2 BR unit is actually bigger than the picture suggests. The house is an older unit but being able to walk right out the door onto the beach was well worth it. One caveat is that if you intend to dive or snorkle off the beach (and it is worth doing), you will need booties to protect your feet and you need to plan on doing it on the high tide. The lava pools and rock is very jagged and difficult to maneuver on and entrance and exit can be tricky. However, a short drive away is a great beach with easier access. I would go back and enjoy Duke and Miriam’s hospitality anytime.

Date of Stay: 05/23/10 Review Submitted: 06/10/10

We really enjoyed our stay at Puako. The low key residential neighborhood is great for morning walks, and the general store is within walking distance. There are many turtles resting on the rocks next door and on the local beaches. We enjoyed soaking in the tidal pools in front of the unit, and one evening a turtle came and joined me! The picnic tables in front are great for sunset dinners, and the sunsets were spectacular. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking and has enough dishes for company. Our favorite body surfing and swimming beach, Hapuna Beach, is just a couple miles to the North. Beach chairs and boogie boards were provided. Our host, Duke, was very gracious and provided us with fresh fruit, banana cream pie, and even some Ono that he had caught. We enjoyed the Hawaiian hospitality!

We were looking for a relaxing and quiet place on the water to finish our vacation to Hawaii, this was the perfect place. This is an older property, but the studio was clean, well furnished and had a comfortable bed. Having internet access and a washing machine was really helpful. Duke was available for questions but also was very good at giving us enough space so that we could really enjoy the location. Wailea 69 is close by with a great beach and the sunsets from the lanai can't be beat. We would definitely recommend this property.

We keep dreaming of Duke’s home on the ocean in Puako. We loved sitting on the lanai every morning, watching the whales and birds. Days were spent visiting all of the beaches in short driving distance, and shopping in Waimea and Kona. Then back to the lanai for sunset and grilled fresh fish. The studio was roomier than we expected and clean and well-set-up for cooking. Duke and Miriam provide the perfect mixture of helpfulness and privacy. This was our most relaxing and maybe best vacation ever. We are so looking forward to our next visit!

We just love sitting on your beach scouting for whales - no need to go on a boat - they are right there in front of you! This time we did make it to some of the swimming beaches nearby (the best on the island) but still spent most of the time just being. What an amazing place! Thanks again Duke and Miriam!

We will definitely be back for another visit. The owners are very easy to communicate with. My kids (3 and 5 yrs old) constantly ask "When are going back to the Beach House?" The house is very clean and welcoming. It was amazing having the ocean as a backyard. The sunsets are out of this world beautiful!!!

We can't say enough about how special this place & the owners were. The whale watching from our lanai was spectacular as well as checking out the turtles while they sunned on the rocks. We found ourselves just a couple of miles from the best beaches in Hawaii(Hapuna, Waialea, Spencer). Duke & Mariam were eager to help to make the most of our vacation. The studio was much bigger than I expected and very clean. If you want to relax in the privacy of your own place, while soaking in the unique ecosystem of the Big Island this is the place to stay.

One of our favorite family outing is a weekend at the Puako Beach House. We live in Hilo and with the rising airfares, it's no longer affordable to travel to the outer island with a family of four. Instead, we find it much more affordable and just as fun to travel to Puako for the weekend. The Puako beach house comes with everything you need in a home. It's spacious, clean and right on the oceanfront! All we need to pack is our food and drinks and we can relax and enjoy the entire weekend. Our children love the white sandy beach and many outdoor activities available at this property and surrounding area. My daughter loves watching the sea turtles swimming nearby or resting on the rocks. The sunset is beautiful! My 15 year-old son recently celebrated his birthday at the beach house and invited many friends and family. Everyone was more than comfortable and we all had a great time. It was a beautiful weekend and the boys decided to sleep on the beach with lounge chairs, surrounding the campfire they built. The stars were out and the beautiful smell of the ocean and sound of the waves made for a perfect night. The weekend ended much too quickly for my son and his friends. We will definitely be back to this Puako Beach House and will recommend this rental to all of our friends and family.

Great place to stay, beutiful sunset and a place to relax away from the city. My family comes here every spring break, my son just loves the beach and enjoy playing with the host children. We always enjoy our time here.

Great place, great hosts. The apartment is huge, rambling, perfect for a family with kids; the studio nice and cozy with a knockout view. We rented them both and held a wedding for 70 on the lawn between the house and the sea. (These guys are wedding specialists.) Bring a bunch of friends and relax here, it's a bargain!

Duke and his family were wonderful hosts at their family home. The rental sits right on the shore of an amazing coral reef for easy access to hours of snorkeling (or diving), fishing, sunsets. Few minutes drive to Kohala beaches. Great alternative to the mega-resorts and support a local family.
