This was our second trip to the cottage and it was so much fun to be back. It was a comfortable space for six adults and we used the great kitchen to cook fabulous mother's day dinner and brunch. The goats were just as funny as the first time we visited and the dog loved, loved, loved the large fenced yard. We missed the chickens but I gather they just migrated up to the next house, so had we gotten our act together, could probably have visited them, too. Hiked in GW National Forest, went to the craft coop and had a great time. I suspect we'll be back soon to check out the new Lost River Brewing Company and other new local developments. The zucchini lemon muffins that first morning were a big hit!

I would not hesitate to recommend this property. We needed a restful quiet spring vacation with lots of nature, time for reading, sleeping, and family board games and movies, and this charming well-appointed cottage perfectly fulfilled our needs, comfortably accommodating our family of 6. The goats, fresh eggs, and home-made muffins were icing on the cake. There were many options for hikes in the vicinity; we enjoyed lost river state park and the g washington forest, trails recommended by owners. In March, most other nearby attractions were not yet open for the season but that was not a concern for us.

Guys, I dont normally right reviews but we have to tell you we had a great time.Your home is both beautiful and inviting.We arrived thursday night after dark. So friday morning we awoke to that Beautiful countryside. Ellen and I completely lost track of time that entire weekend. I don't normally sleep well away from home but I must say that the bed was the most comfortable thing I have been in forever. The mattress and pillows were wonderful and you just "sunk" into them. With our busy lives it was a wonderfull place to take the time to reconnect. We will most certainly see you again next spring. Thanks again Ellen and Patrick

We stayed at the cottage as a headquarters to visit our daughter in summer camp nearby. We brought our dog, Bixby, a friend, and her daughter. The cottage is lovely and comfortable. The owners take obvious care to make sure that people feel special there. We enjoyed relaxing on the front porch and hanging in the back yard. And, the goats, of course, are lots of fun.

An Amazing New Year

We rented both properties this past new years and had an amazing time. Both houses have a good amount of space and yards for dogs to play. The houses are a great mix of the countryside while still being close enough to DC for a weekend getaway. This house is more modern with a great kitchen and living room. We're all hoping to make it back in the spring and explore a bit more of what the area has to offer. Also the muffins are as delicious as everyone says!

The Cottage at Lost River is a real gem. If you're in search of utter peace and quiet, easily accessible hiking, rolling hills, and the creature comforts (nice bedrooms, 2 reading porches, fresh eggs from the chicken coop) that make any vacation memorable, this is the place for you. Head to Lost River, kick back, and just relax.

My husband and two daughters rented for a week. We loved it! The chickens and the goats were great! My daughter loved looking for fresh eggs each morning and feeding the goats! Our hosts were very welcoming and helpful. We got fresh muffins when we arrived and when we left! We will always remember our visit to West Virginia!

We can't recommend this vacation rental highly enough! The house was well appointed, the owners were very generous (freshly baked muffins were delivered to us, the chickens left us plenty of eggs, and the garden provided great veggies!), and the area was beautiful! Ah what to say about this wonderful find.. We didn't know what to expect when we got to the farm. Oh what a delight ! From the minute we arrived we were just overwhelmed at the cottage and the surrounding area. The cottage is totally awesome. Mark & Phil were/are such gracious hosts. Sunday morning to be visited by Phil who delivered us fresh, hot muffins !! who could ask for more. The cottage is located right next to George Washington National Forest. We spent most of the week exploring the area. If you get a chance go to visit Seneca Rocks. It's about a 35 minute ride from the cottage. Beautiful area. We were riding a motorcycle and discovered so many wonderful roads to explore. We also did some 4 wheeling & had a great time. The weather was very good. The temperatures were still warm for the end of September & the trees were starting to turn. The colors were spectacular. The roads coming out of Lost River State Park are great ! Lots of hair pins turns and the views are just breathtaking. If you are a motorcycle rider, its a great place to explore ! The cottage had every possible thing that you could ever want. Mark & Phil are gracious hosts. It was home away from home. The cottage , the porches, OH and lets not forget about the goats & chickens !. Fresh eggs every morning, fresh vegatables to pick ! I would recommend this to everyone. Great for families with children, for hikers, for bikers. This is one of the best finds !!! We are looking forward to coming back again. Our GPS actually found a road that was not on a map and we were able to cross over the mountain by Peru, WV to get back to Lost City ! It was such fun. Normal people probably would have turned around but not us : ).... Thank you Mark & Phil ! You two are the best...

What a great house! We couldn't of had better hosts and it provided us with a great opportunity to just get away from it all. We spent every evening sitting on the porch, sipping wine and listening to the crickets...and nothing else. Talk about peace and quiet!

My very urban family (including 2 dogs) spent a relaxing week at the farmhouse cottage in Lost City. The cottage is in a buccolic setting but it is a comfortable, contemporary little house with modern appliances and comfortable beds. My daughter and I fed the goats and chickens every day and gathered fresh eggs. We hiked the nearby state park and national forest and spent an afternoon horseback riding. Mark and Phil are great hosts; they went out of their way to make us comfortable. We can't wait to go back.

Tim and I totally loved staying at the cottage with our dog, Kiva. We practically lived on the front porch that afforded us beautiful views and allowed us to have the five chickens (the girls) out with us so we could keep an eye on them. Each morning we gathered fresh eggs from our girls (thanked them) and fried them up with yummy cheeses and pepper and then devoured them on that great porch with tea and coffee. The house was very comfy...everything we needed, and we slept like babies each night after having fun with the TV stations that entertained us and lulled us to sleep. The hiking trails thrilled us each day as we ventured out for hours covering lovely places and viewing the mountains and valleys beyond. Oh, and Phil's muffins will spoil you. We loved them and we loved the fact that Phil and Mark are like old friends who welcome you with no pretenses...just plain, down home friendliness and good will and faith. We were made to feel like the farmhouse/cottage was our home. Tim worked some while I painted and sketched with such relaxation and joy...we both want to come back for a whole week to enjoy the location and especially those adorable chickens that we wish we had brought home with us. Miss those fresh eggs!!!!! We will be back soon.

We stayed the Mar 28-29 weekend at the Farmhouse. Even though the weather was dreary the stay was wonderful. The house is very comfortable and was a great place to unwind. Mark and Phil are inviting gracious hosts who truly care about your comfort (...and the wonderful muffins). They patiently answered all our questions and told us about their goats, chickens and turkey. Even better was opportunity to feed the animals, pick fresh eggs, and let the chickens out to stretch their legs. Our 3-year old son absolutely love it and has been talking about the stay for the past 3 weeks. If you are looking to leave the stresses of your week behind this is the place.

An incredible rental! Our time at Lost River was so relaxing, the week felt like a month. Wonderful views, a cozy atmosphere, and great hiking. The house is well appointed and comfortable. Mark and Phil are great hosts--from the moment we sent the first e-mail, they were responsive, accommodating,and provided lots of helpful information that made our trip a breeze. We had a wonderful time, and I think our dog had about the best week of her life. We will definitely be back!

What more can I say but this is a GREAT rental. It's not often that you can find a weekend getaway that 1) is an easy 2 hour drive from DC 2) has all the modern conveniences of home 3) has a comfortable bed 4) has outdoor activity just outside the doorstep 5) has incredibly hospitable hosts and 6) is dog friendly with a FENCED yard!! The only thing missing is a hot tub for the cold WV nights and a cozy wine bar in the "town". Perhaps Phil and Mark could work up a new business venture ;-)

I cannot begin to describe what a wonderful time my husband and I had at the cottage! It was so comfortable and peaceful! Our pup loved it as well! He is perplexed by the chickens! We already have a trip planned to go back! My husband is counting down the days! We took to the trails one day! The cottage is just a couple of minutes from breath-taking views! Also, the people around the area are very, very nice! I totally recommend the cottage to everyone!

We spent an amazing week at the Lost City Farmhouse Cottage in October. It provided a beautiful balance of the best amenities (wonderful linens, tasteful decor, jacuzzi, satellite TV and Wi-Fi) with perfect tranquility(millions of stars, laying hens, adorable goats, invigorating hiking,spectacular mountain vistas and a 20-minute drive for cell phone service--the best blessing of all). Our dogs adored romping in the huge fenced yard and splashing in the chill water of The Willows. Even when we stayed home, the view from every window was amazing. Mark and Phil were attentive while leaving us be, and the homemade banana bread was delicious. All this just two hours from the madness of DC--we'll come again!!

I have rented several vacation rentals but this has definitely been my favorite. My parents, my dog and I stayed here for a week and truly enjoyed the full range of experiences. Mark and Phil were wonderful to have nearby - gave us a nice sense of security. We enjoyed the chickens, eggs, and goats as everyone else has. However, we also loved sitting on the front porch and watching the deer, bluejays, and our personal favorite - a pair of pileated woodpeckers! The house itself is so clean and comfortable and had everything we needed as well as some fun and unique decor. It is an excellent location from daytrips to lots of locations like Harpers Ferry, Berkley Springs, Seneca Falls, Skyline Drive and Blackwater Falls as well as the more local sites like the Lost River State park and the craft cooperative in Lost River. We'll look forward to a longer trip to the Trout Pond park next time we come. We can't say enough about this experience and anyone in doubt shouldn't hesitate to try it.

This was truly a wonderful vacation getaway. Mark and Phil are great host wanting to make your stay pleasant and are always ready to help.I have three kids who had fun with the goats and chickens,checking for eggs and feeding everyday. We came on the recommendation of my sister-in-law and had a delightfully relaxing time. Our girls, age 12 and 8, got a taste of country life and immediately fell in love with the goats and the chickens. We found that goats really will eat anything(!) and were lucky enough to have fresh eggs many days of our trip. Mark and Phil were very friendly and encouraging, sharing helpful information, local lore, and tips about enjoying the area. Our trip included two guided horseback excursions at the Lost River State Park Stables, multiple visits to Trout Run Lake, and daily visits to Mark and Phil's up the road to visit baby goat Jill who needed to be bottle fed. Though Lost River is truly a country escape, there is nothing about the house that feels like roughing it. The appointments are all nicely laid out, from the heated bathroom tile floors, nice linens, and eclectic decorations to the WiFi connection that never faltered and plenty of cable access. Privacy can be found in the master suite on the first floor, but family time is very comfortable in the downstairs open floor plan. Be sure to check out special programs at the Lost River State Park. We were treated to a free evening program from Champion Storyteller and Liar Bil Lepp that was hilarious and very family friendly.

We spent 9 nights here as part of our vacation from England, and it was the highlight of the trip. We have 2 young boys James 4 & Mathhew 1 1/2, and they had a great time,feeding the goats & chickens also collecting the plentiful supply of fresh eggs. The House is a real treasure trove of weird and wacky stuff, inc plenty of books for all ages and interests. the location couldn't be better if you want to get away from it all, there is plenty to do with 45 min drive. Mark & Phil are as good hosts as you could wish to have, and live up the road so are there if you have any problems or question about the local area. We thoroughly reccommend the 'Goat Farm' to anyone whop asked. Thanks Guys, Dave, Ali, James & Matthew Beech

My family and I spent nine days at Lost City (July 3-12). It was a truly relaxing and enjoyable vacation. We would recommend a canoe trip with Eagle's Nest Outfitters on the South Branch of the Potomac River - very scenic. We also spent several days at Trout Pond Park at their man made beach. Horseback riding at Lost River Park was very reasonable. We hiked some trails in the George Washington National Park. We did the Smoke Hole Caverns tour - many caverns to choose from in the area. Good fishing is abundant as well. We experienced some of the local general stores and flea markets. The farmhouse was a great place to stay - quiet, relaxing, and very homey. Our hosts were wonderful and always were available to answer questions, provide directions, or give us ideas for things to do in the area. Our five year old son loved "working" the farm (so did we!). He gathered eggs daily, fed the goats and chickens, and spent hours in the goat pens with his new found "friends." The local residents are extremely friendly and welcoming. If you want a relaxing, no hassle vacation, then you should consider the Lost City Farmhouse Cottage Escape. You can find plenty of things to do or do nothing at all.

We had such a calm and peaceful stay at the farmhouse. My daughter loved the goats, turkey and chickens--not to mention picking a few vegies from the garden. She loved collecting eggs in the morning, and feeding the baby goats. This is a tiny, little town with great big views! It was a step back in time, and an education about living on a gentleman's farm. We had a delightful time. What a simple existance. It really changes the way you think about life. The nearby rocks and streams were so much fun to explore! We took a trip to Virginia to see the Rock Bridge and a Safari Animal Park. The hosts were wonderful. We couldn't have asked for a more peaceful vacation. If you want to step into a peaceful retreat, and get away from the rat race, this is definitely the place to be! Civilization isn't too far away, and yet you can disappear into nature anytime you want! What a great location!

Our intention was to spend a short time at the farm house to escape the winter blues of Washington. But the escape turned into excitement and before we knew it, Spring had arrived. Only then did we realize that 6 months had passed and we were going home. I still wake up at 7:00 to feed the chickens, goats and turkey (Gertrude), one of the joys of the farm. Fresh eggs, seasonal fruits, vegetables and flowers give you the experience of country living at its best. Owners Mark and Phil make you feel right at home and that extends to the way they care for their animals and their stewardship of the land. Simply put, we love the red roofed farm house and Lost City Goats. It earns a Five BAA rateing in our book.

What an awesome cottage! We had a great weekend and were pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. The heated marble floors and whirlpool tub, made our weekend luxurious. The dogs had as great of a time as we did with the huge yard and friendly neighborhood goats next door. Farm fresh eggs made it all so special. We'll be back for sure.
