Hatteras Island is a unique vacation destination. It has it all! The Island is a barrier island with miles of untouched beaches as 80% of the island cannot be developed but has pristine woods, marshes and bird preserves all of which are worth seeing. See the historic Chicamacomico Life Saving station in Rodanthe, the Cape Hatteras lighthouse in Buxton, the famous "Canadian Hole" in Avon, capitol of wind and kite surfing on the East Coast, and the many small shops and restaurants on the island. Take a 40 minute ferry ride to Ocracoke Island and see the wild ponies, explore the picturesque harbor and small women's and craft shops on the island, see the famous British cemetery actually part of England, and visit the Ocracoke
lighthouse. If fishing is your sport, charter a deep sea boat for tuna, cobia, wahoo, mackeral, mahi-mahi and other Gulf Stream fish, or fish off one of island fishing piers, fish in the Sound or just surf cast off the beach for blues, croakers, drum and flounder.
The "Kayak Kingdom" is what this cottage is. It is 30 feet from the Sound and has a large dock to tie up to and expansive views......the Sound is fairly shallow until you get way out so the
waters are safe and paddling is easy. The cottage sits on almost two acres near the point which is all pristine with ducks and herons always around.....the shore along the North side of Hatteras Island is very pretty and full of unspoiled acreage.... with set backs and other regulations of the Federal government and State of No. Carolina keeping it pristine. Explore the many inlets and small bays which have all natural foliage and wildlife. Or, paddle over to the windsurfing capital of the East between Buxton and Avon and watch the daredevils of the surf become airborne in the ever present winds. After several hours of kayaking come back to the cottage, tie up and jump into the six person hot tub on the landing to the dock to watch the best sunsets on the island....a glass of fine wine caps off this wonderful experience. There are plenty of restuarants
around for a great dining experience after relaxing in the hot tub."

My wife and family have been staying at Carolina Moon for about 7 years. Each year, we anticipate our return, knowing that our experiences will be rich and rewarding. The setting is truly magnificent, and the home is perfect for living, relaxing, and enjoying one another. This year we had a surprise guest. An Osprey called on us twice, perching high above the sound on the upper deck. A great resting area for people and for Osprey looking for fish. Our grand children were mesmerized by the size and beauty of our visitor. Because the property is on a slightly isolated spit of land called Brooks Point, the views from every window and angle reveal water or marshy grasslands. The water views are special as are the views of the grasslands, home to egrits and other magnificent birds. A vacation at Carolina Moon is always what the doctor ordered and we highly recommend it.
Owner response: We are always delighted when this family returns year after year. They share our opinion that it is a very special place. The house only had some minor issues like a few shingles, a latticework and screens in Irene......house stayed habiltal and the new stronger dock we installed last fall rode out the storm well. We have kept a lot of the acerage natural so that the waters ebb and flow in a normal fashion without meeting any obstacles or destroying the natural vegetation. We look forward to their return next August and thank them for their continued use of the cottage.

we are glad that the same couple have enjoyed the cottage for two years in a row....it is a special place and we strive to make it nice for folks....the views and the kayaking are special indeed.....it is one of the prettiest settings on Hatteras Island and everyone seems to love it.

We have stayed two years in a row at Carolina Moon and absolutely love the property and house. The pictures on the website do not do justice to the beautiful view of the sound. The house effectively has a point of land into the sound to itself and that gives it a wonderful feel. The house is beautifully laid out inside and perfectly kept. It is on a very quiet inlet that even on busy weekends does seem to have much noise of the neighboring houses, etc. We put our kayaks into the water next to the private dock on the property and have access to great paddling.
Recommended for:Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, families with young children.
