The weather was rather wet and the house is located miles from anything else, but it is convenient for visiting the the volcano and not real far from Hilo and other places in the Puna district. Home is nicely equipped, comfortable, and attractive. Excellent for a couple and can even accommodate a guest or two easily. Screened lanai and property is lovely, kitchen well laid out, and large bathroom (although shower is rather small). Bedroom is good size with small additional lanai. Owners available by phone but not at all intrusive since they live on the mainland. Very private location, clean and cozy environment.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Aloha Lloyd, Thank you for sharing your review of Our Hawaiian Hideaway. We are greatful for the rain as it is what makes this area of Hawaii so lush and tropical. Sorry we can't do anything about the weather!!! Yes, our Hideaway is located in the Puna area and close to Hilo, and Volcano National Park. Other areas in Puna are close by, but it is true that if you want to spend the day in Kona or Hawi, it will be a drive. We are glad that you found our home clean and well apponited. What a great get away!! We love staying in Vacation Rental homes on our vacations and have stayed at quite a few. Would recommend this home to any of our family or friends looking to visit the Volcano National Park and surrounding Puna area adventures. Super private with amazing gardens and well appointed , very clean and well stocked interior. Our favorite spot was the gorgeous screened in Lani overlooking the gardens.! This was our second honeymoon and my husband got extra points for cooking almost every meal and serving it on the lanai! We wanted to take home the four friendly chickens that came to visit us for hand outs! Great change from the condo we stayed at in Kona the first few days on the BI. Not a resort for sure...but that is why we liked it!!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, girls getaway, adventure seekers, age 55+, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thank you for your review. We are so happy that you choose Our Hawaiian Hideaway for your second honeymoon. We hope you have many more happy years together, and we hope to see you again!!!

Location and neighborhood leaves something to be desired. Neighborhood seems less than friendly, and the emphasis on security reaffirms that feeling. No nearby grocery store or restaurants. House is a bit small but nice enough. Everything was clean. Smells a bit like cat pee and mold. No laundry. Nice screen porch and garden. Well stocked with all the essentials, except paper products. If you're a light sleeper the frogs and rainstorms are quite loud. Also there is some mysterious thumping and bumping at night, and one night we were awoken by a very loud and prolonged banging from what sounded like the bathroom window that was scary and not explainable in any way that did not make it feel even more scary. There was some nice wild chickens and a slightly aggressive wild pig frequenting the property. I thought it seemed pretty spooky outside after dark. In fact I totally avoided going outside after the sun went down, and I'm someone who likes taking walks at night. So...it was nice enough, and the price is good, but we would not stay there again.Owner response: We do appreciate when a guest takes the time to leave a review of our home. This review comes as a complete shock to us as we answered over 10 emails and phone calls prior to and during this guest stay. We answered all of their questions about the location, and the proximity to Hilo, Volcano National Park and other areas as well. We answered questions about having a laundry, and this guest even used our laundry. So why would they say we don't have laundry? Our Hawaiian Hideaway is our “Secluded - Tropical – Paradise”. Our 2 Acre property is a totally different type of vacation rental then you will find at a Resort Condo in Kona. Please see our other reviews and judge for yourself if Our Hawaiian Hideaway is the type of Getaway that you are looking for. Mahalo

For our first trip to Hawaii we luckily stayed at the Hawaiian Hideaway. We were looking for a place away from the crowds and typical tourist trappings of a large resort hotel. The hideaway was great for our needs. The accommodations were just as described, but one bonus that wasn't mentioned was the daily visits from chickens, a wild pig, and the evening sounds of frogs. Just getting to the hideaway was a delightful and beautiful drive from the highway. Though we came to see the volcano and eat wonderful local foods our favorite activity by far was the waiopae tide pools suggested by the owner. I recommend this oasis to anyone looking for a relaxing stay.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, age 55+, sightseeing.

We arrived during a storm, in the black of night. The roads to the hideaway are VERY dark, but the directions were great and we found the gated driveway without a hitch! A small flashlight is a very good item to have. Be aware that the coqui frogs sing their little hearts out during the night, so if you are a light sleeper, I really recommend earplugs. Also there was a fan in the closet that helps drown out their symphony. The bed is very comfy and has a tiny porch off of it. The entire cottage is very nicely decorated and spotlessly clean. We loved the kitchen. Made all of our breakfasts and several suppers which we ate out on the screened in porch. Very pleasant. Buying bottled water when you grocery shop would be a good idea. (There is a Walmart soon after one exits the airport road on the left.) Four hens visited us each morning and had a little conversation with us! The lush greenery all around the cottage is lovely...palms, flowering shrubs, bird of paradise, lime trees. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hawaiian Hideaway and recommend it highly to others. Many sights are eaily reached from this location including Volcanoes National Park, Akaka Falls, Waipo Valley Overlook, Hawaiian Tropical Gardens, Lili'uokalani Gardens, Onekahakaha Beach Park, Rainbow Falls and Mauna Kea. LOTS to do! The owners are very easy to deal with and correspond with making your booking a pleasant experience.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, age 55+, sightseeing.
Owner response: Aloha Michele, Linda & I want to thank you for your comments. We are glad you enjoyed your stay at Our Hawaiian Hideaway. We try to make each of our guests feel at home, and keep things simple. Arriving late at night can be a challange, and we hope our directions help make it an easy trip. Your review will help us continue to improve our guests vacations at Our Hawaiian Hideaway. Mahalo, Bob & Linda

Arrived Hilo on a rainy night. The directions were great for a pair of lost souls, the flashlight suggestion was ideal. Arrived to a very clean, tastefully decorated place. Very warm and cozy, felt like home. After a good night sleep, was greeted to a clear morning light to explore the place and beautiful gardens. It just kept getting better. We had stopped at a market after we had arrived, one suggested by Bob & Linda, so we were ready to begin our adventure with a hot cup of coffee and a delightful breakfast. With such a complete kitchen, it was an easy chore. Loved the fact that the house was so organized, even the light switches and other unknowns were labeled, never had to flip switches to figure out what they operated, they were labeled. Most of our meals were enjoyed on the screened-in lanai, porch. Took our showers in a huge bathroom with plush towels and got ready for our day. Wanted to see the volcano, waterfalls, and beaches. The location of the place was ideal, pretty much in the middle. Nothing was that far and not a lot of gas to get there. Our favorite beach was where Hwy 11 ends at Hilo, going right to end of road, left led to downtown Hilo. So many sea turtles and snorkling in the coral reefs with lots of tropical fish. The water was warm! Overall was a great trip, everyday started with a great night sleep, a hot breakfast, packing a lunch, and ended with a great meal at home. Such an ideal and private place. NO REGRETS! Thanks Bob and Linda for knowing what makes a great place to weary travelers. Never a single problem. Even had morning visits from the singing chickens. We loved them. Ruben and I highly recommend the place... GlenOwner response: Aloha Glen, Thank you for the nice review and kind words. We are glad you enjoyed staying at Our Hawaiian Hideaway, and hope you keep us in mind for your furture trips to The Big Island. Mahalo, Bob & Linda

Just want to say thank you for a lovely place to stay! We wish we would have stayed there the whole week instead of the Kona side. What a great place you have to share. It was so nice to see that it had everything we needed (except for more time!) We made sure everything was in order before we left and would love to keep this in our special vacation file of places we would visit again! Thank You!
