Located in quiet residential neighborhood. This apartment is the upstairs of a Cape Cod, but has total privacy.
Unit has washer/dryer, and plenty of sheets, towels, kitchen linen, etc. Cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, dish detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, etc. furnished.
Many bicycles, two tandem ocean kayaks, one tandem Carolina Keowee kayak, and a canoe, plus all the paddles and life vests. Also includes a 'tag-along' which is a great way for a younger child to safely participate in bike rides... All the comforts of home - everything you need for a quiet getaway!
Roanoke Island is located in the sound, west of the barrier islands of the Outer Banks. It is away from the hustle, bustle and traffic that are often associated with the more 'touristy' part of the Outer Banks.
The area offers two national wildlife refuges within a half-hour, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and a wide assortment of water and land related recreational opportunities.
Roanoke Island is traversed by a beautiful bicycle path that runs along the Roanoke Island Corrider. From the 'bike path', visitors may reach all the historic, cultural, and natural spots of the island, including the North Carolina Aquarium, The Lost Colony, Elizabethan Gardens, Roanoke Island Festival Park, public boat ramps and swimming areas, and great places to fish, bird, or just watch the sun set.
For explorers, there are great day trips to state parks, private preserves, or other national wildlife refuges! Manteo is the ideal place to plan a host of day trips throughout eastern North Carolina.
Background:
This rental is my opportunity to share the things I love about living on Roanoke Island. I had no clue what to charge or how to handle the entire 'venture' - so I am winging it this first year. Any advice or comments you might offer, I would certainly appreciate!
Things to See and Do on The Outer Banks:
You know what they say about real estate... the three most important things are location, location, and location!
- The Beach - Nags Head beaches and Cape Hatteras National Seashore are just a ten minute drive. The apartment includes beach chairs, boogie boards, and Ocean Kayaks (great for the ocean).
- Roanoke Island - Roanoke Island offers so much, I am always amazed that anyone ever leaves it (I seldom do...). The North Carolina Aquarium, Roanoke Island Festival Park, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, the Elizabethan Gardens, the Lost Colony, and downtown Manteo are incredible spots you will not want to miss.
My house is right off the Bike Path (about 100 yards) - and we live on a private, dead-end road (only five houses on the road). All the places I just mentioned are no more than a ten-minute bike ride from the apartment - and I furnish the bikes!
- Paddling Spots - Everywhere from the ocean to the sound and all kinds of bays, creeks, canals, and rivers. I provide lots of information about places to paddle on Alligator River and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges and all around the Outer Banks.
- Take a Walk on the Wild Side!
Hatteras Island, about 30 minutes away by car, offers wonderfully pristine beaches and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Pea Island has a sound access at New Inlet that's ideal for putting in kayaks or canoes to paddle in the sound.
There is a great little Visitor Center, two very nice wildlife trails, and the beaches are out-of-this-world. Pea Island offers the nicest beaches on the Outer Banks.
Roanoke Island has a number of places to paddle, including all around the Elizabeth II (the replica of the ship the first English came over on... in Shallowbag Bay in downtown Manteo. You could even take a long day and paddle completely around Roanoke Island!
Dare County Mainland offers a number of adventures... paddling, walking, driving... Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge has 15 miles of color-coded paddling trails... the trail is about 30 minutes from my door! The Refuge also has a black bear population - and you can actually predictably see bears in the wild!

Five of us stayed very comfortably in this bungalo. There were several beds to choose from, 2 bathrooms (one of the showers didn't work that great though), a dinette, and a grill. We used ALL of the outdoor equipment! Bikes everyday and used the Kayaks for a full day. If you have a group, it's better if you have 2 vehicles to carry the kayaks. We had to make 2 trips. For the price, the place was great. There isn't a stove, so we grilled out everyday. Grocery store is within biking distance, so we saved a lot of money that way. Manteo lighthouse is beautiful! I loved that we stayed on Manteo and took a day trip to Ocracoke b/c there was so much to do in Manteo! Bonnie was very accommodating to our needs as well.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Shower head was replaced... and it works like a top now! Sorry I didn't get it replaced while you were here! Thanks for the nice comments! Come back soon and tell all your friends!

Year Purchased: 2001
About the owner: When I found myself an "empty nester" and almost ready to retire from a 30-year career with national wildlife refuges, I decided to use some of the empty space in my home to share some of the loves of my life with others... So, I added a few outside staircases, built a few walls, and put up an "open for business" sign. The first couple of seasons have been great fun! I've met a lot of wonderful folks, learned a few things that work... and a few that don't. I have been so blessed to live on Roanoke Island (we're the part of the Outer Banks that has real grass!) for almost 30 years. And, I believe there's no place like it! This is NOT a bed and breakfast experience (though several have described it as a bed and breakfast without the 'expensive breakfast'!). It is family-operated, and it's my attempt to share the things I love - especially to folks who might not otherwise be able to visit the area. I offer apartments for rent with full baths and private entrances. Both have kitchens/kitchenettes; both have balconies/decks. The unit with a kitchenette (without a range) has a nice grill with a side burner. Both come with outdoor recreational equipment, including canoes, kayaks, bicycles, beach chairs, umbrellas, etc. Both include linens, washer/dryer, and offer a peaceful break from the hectic pace of the beach-- while providing easy access to all the beach offerings - only 10 minutes away. My guests repeatedly say, "This is the first time I've come to the Outer Banks and not stayed on the beach.... and I'll never stay on the beach again!!" My prices are appreciably lower than beach prices. And, you'll love the peaceful atmosphere! Please ask all the questions you like.... Contact me any time!
Why the Owner Chose Manteo:
Roanoke Island is so much nicer than the beach-- and is only 10-12 minutes away! We're right on the bike path- easy riding distance from downtown Manteo with restaurants, movies, coffee houses, pottery shops, antiques, etc. We have the Lost Colony, Roanoke Island Festival Park, the NC Aquarium, and the Elizabethan Gardens.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
You get free use of bikes (including lots of specialty bikes) a canoe, 5 kayaks, beach gear, etc.
