Terlingua house description

This custom adobe home is the perfect 'getaway' when visiting the Big Bend. Located on 20 acres and at the end of a long drive, the Big Bend Getaway provides seclusion and privacy. Furnished in a western style with modern flair, the house is built for comfort and relaxation indoors and out. Thick adobe walls and efficient heat and air keep it cozy in any type of weather. The large front porch and screened dining porch provide shade from the heat and protection from flying insects. The carport will protect your car from desert sun and storms. The main bedroom has a queen bed and its own AC and heater for a perfect night's sleep. The kitchen is equipped with everything you would typically need to prepare and serve most meals. Enjoy your meals in the rock floored dining room or on the dining porch. Relax in the comfortable living room, the semi-private den, one of the porches, around the fire circle, or on the double hammock. If you need a second bed, we'll fold out the queen size futon in the den. If you need a third bed for young children, we'll leave out the inflatable mattress and extra bedding.

We can comfortably accommodate four adults on a queen bed and queen futon. Dogs are also welcome. While we typically limit occupancy to four people, we can accommodate a slightly larger group if some are small children. Just let us know so we can make sure you will all be comfortable. If you have a larger group, consider renting the Getaway and the nearby Terlingua Ranch Retreat. The owners are good friends and we often arrange dual rentals. Just call or email us for details.

We recommend bringing a good book, or select one from our bookshelves, many about the Big Bend region. Just kick back and enjoy the solitude inside or out. Of course, there are lots of other activities to keep your stay busy and exciting. Watch the abundant birds, wildlife, and desert plant life on our twenty acres or as you walk, bike, or drive along the hundreds of miles of dirt and rock roads of the 200,000 acre Terlingua Ranch. Sign in at the Terlingua Ranch Lodge and hike along the remote and breathtaking trails through the Christmas Mountains. Enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool and inviting Terlingua Ranch pool (just six miles down the road). Visit Big Bend National Park (just 30 minutes to the west gate) or Big Bend Ranch State Park (just 45 minutes to the Barton Warnock Visitor Center). Enjoy meals, drinks, live music and more at the various restaurants and bars in the area. Sit out at night to watch the stars, tell tall tales, or enjoy a small fire. Drive along some of the most scenic roads in Texas. Raft or canoe down the Rio Grande. Enjoy a guided horseback ride or jeep tour through the rugged west Texas landscape.

With so many options, you can return home as relaxed or exhausted as you choose. Either way, you'll “getaway” from everyday life and bring back countless memories.

My high expectations are often let down. Not so with this Getaway vacation home. It is a beautiful, clean, comfortable house in excellent condition on a remote property in Terlingua Ranch (not Terlingua town, which is about half hour away.) My husband and I came for several days to get away from it all and visit Big Bend. We couldn't have asked for a better retreat and home base to unwind after hiking and exploring the park and surrounding areas. It is literally out in the middle of nowhere in the foothills, with all the space and privacy you can ask for. The rental is actually nicer than the photos, as some more decorating has been done in a cheerful, contemporary southwestern style. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything I needed to prepare meals, which we often ate in the screened in outside porch. The living area was a perfect place to kick back, second only to the front porch. The bathroom was clean, stocked with lots of fluffy towels, and worked well. The shower is small but we didn't mind. The bedroom is small but nice. The bed is very firm. We found the owners to be pleasant and responsive. They were out of coffee filters and brought some out to us the same day. They thought of everything to make the place welcoming and enjoyable. There are lots of outdoors activities and sightseeing in the area. We explored Big Bend National and State parks, hiked and did the scenic drives through Terlingua Ghost Town past Lajitas along the Rio Grande, BBNP was our favorite! Be sure to stargaze, it's amazing. If you do not plan to make your own meals, I recommend Terlingua (new or Ghost Town) for meals rather than the cafe at Terlingua Ranch for casual dining. Lajitas and Marathon have excellent fine (aka pricey) dining at the resort/hotel. We highly recommend the Getaway and hope to return.

Very clean house with well-outfitted kitchen (we cooked all meals) great secluded location. My boys (11 and 15) loved this place, climbed to the top of the hill behind the house, did some star-gazing, learned some water conservation and appreciation for desert-living. Central location for our Spring Break vacation, with travels to Ft. Davis, Mac Donald Observatory, Marfa, Terlingua, Big Bend National Park, and Big Bend State Park. We could only get this location for half of our stay, so rented a "cabin" in Terligua for the other half--no comparison! Will definitely stay here again!

My wife and I had a wonderful time at the cabin. The utter quiet and peace helped us wind down from months of daily stress. The features of the cabins were just right; including the side screen porch for dining, all the books and guides in the cabin about area finds, the kitchen supplies and of course the fantastic views and hikes available right outside your doors. Very, very quiet at all times. What a great place to unwind and re-connect with one another. Proximity to Big Bend and the Fort Davis mountain areas were a plus. We'd definitely stay again. So quiet we thought we could hear the power running in the power lines to the house. Wonderful place to read, paint, think, or just be a couple again.

This home was exactly as described. I loved it...very clean, well maintained, isolated, providing quiet privacy yet it is an easy drive to park areas. It was a great place to come home to after exploring the local scenery. I would highly recommend staying here.

My husband and I stayed here for our 4th wedding anniversary. The Getaway was such a cute, warm place to come home to after long days of hiking in Big Bend. It had all of the comforts of home, plus incredible views. Do be prepared to do a lot of driving from place to place. Restaurants, hiking, and lodging are all fairly spread out, and the speed limit is only 45 mph in the national park. It took us about an hour and a half to get from the Getaway to the trails in the Chisos Mountain Basin. It was about 30 minutes from the Getaway to the Terlingua ghost town where there were some great restaurants. (If you go to the Starlight Theater, I definitely recommend their chocolate bourbon pecan pie. Yum!) The scenery along the way is beautiful, though, with mountains all around, so despite the time spent on the road, you reach your destination before you know it. I would definitely recommend the Getaway to anyone wanting some seclusion and a home away from home while visiting the area.

I had a wonderful time in the Big Bend area and at this awesome house! The house is 10 miles away from the main highway and is perfectly situated part way up a hill and far enough away from any neighbors to give you a true sense of privacy which was perfect for those of us who enjoy the solitude. Unfortunately, I needed to check in with clients from time to time and the internet access and cell service worked perfectly as long as you were close to the house. This is a true desert experience, the remoteness, the quiet, the solitude, and the occasional desert creatures are part of the experience. While the shower may have been small (a complaint of a previous poster), it was adequate and didn't encourage you to linger too long which is very appropriate as water is a scarce resource in the desert. The directions to get to the house were perfect. Be sure to reset your odometer as instructed. And if you arrive at night, bring a flashlight. You wouldn't want to step on anything unexpected! I stocked up on groceries before I arrived as recommended and used the well-appointed kitchen each night. The house had everything I needed for my five night stay. While the parks were 30+ miles away, I didn't mind the drive as the scenery on the way to the parks was just as breathtaking as it was once inside the parks. The distance from the main highway was nice as it ensured a quietness that was almost a little to "loud". The city girl inside of me is just used to a certain level of ambient noise that wasn't present at this location. I slept with the windows open and I swear I woke a couple times because it was too quiet. In the mornings there was the faint sound of a rooster that you could tell was some distance away. I found it very pleasant to wake up to. I spent one day in BBRSP and three days in BBNP. Not enough time . . . there is still more I want to see and hikes I want to take. AND, I'd love to spend a day relaxing on the wonderful hammock on the porch just reading a book. The house was perfect and the star gazing at night was wonderful. I wouldn't want to stay any place else.

Pros: The listing was accurate and the owner/agent I dealt with was very friendly and helpful. It had a full kitchen that was well stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, etc. It was clean. Pool was a pleasant surprise. Beautiful dark night sky. When the a/c, water pump, refrigerator, and neighbor's machinery and roosters weren't making noise the desert was quiet and peaceful. The house had a nice little collection of books. Cons: window unit air conditioners are loud and not that effective, not all windows are screened, screens didn't keep the bugs out (lots of tiny and some not so tiny flying insects). Bathroom got really hot (and will probably be really cold in winter), no screen so couldn't open window. Tiny shower not good for tall people. Only restaurant within 30 miles has friendly owner but food was greasy, bland, and from cans. It was a long drive to Terlingua and the park entrances.

Owner response: We are very sorry that these guests were disappointed by some aspects of their stay. We take customer satisfaction very seriously, as is demonstrated by our overwhelmingly positive reviews. After five years and hundreds of guests, this is our only three star review. All others are five stars and a couple of fours. Of the concerns listed here, the missing and none sealing screens is by far the most serious and will be remedied within a week. We could have remedied it while they were there if we had been notified of the problem. The comment about the ACs not being effective is simply not true. The ACs cool the house very effectively even when outside temps exceed 110F every summer. During this stay, the outside temps maxed out in the low 90s. None of our hundreds of other guests have had a problem cooling or heating the bathroom. The noise concerns simply baffle us. The HVAC units are both high efficiency and low noise models, though certainly not silent. No HVAC units are. The fridge is no louder than any most fridges. The water pump can be heard, but it only cycles when water is being used and the running water is typically louder than the pump. The neighbor with the machinery and rooster (just one) lives nearly a half mile away and most days the rooster can barely be heard, and only when outside. The “machinery” is a small tractor that he fires up about twice a month and can only be heard on the rare occasion that he takes it down the road to help others or work on the road. The shower is a little small, sorry. This is the first negative comment about the shower. Being short ourselves, and not hearing any complaints, we never really thought about it. We can’t make the shower larger, but we can and will either raise the shower head or replace it with one on a flex hose. The various restaurants in Terlingua and the Terlingua Ghost Town range from 26 to 34 miles away and the BBNP entrance is 30 miles. Those distances are clearly disclosed in the listing. We are sorry if the distance came as a surprise to any of our guests. The remoteness of the Getaway is among its many positive features.

The Big Bend Getaway met all expectations!! We found the accommodations clean and comfortable and pre- arrival information helpful, as we waited and bought groceries in Alpine at Blue Water. We enjoyed the selection of books and the quiet solitude made for a relaxing visit. We'll be returning at some future point!

About the owner: The owners and managers are friends--two couples--who live in Terlingua and Marfa and love the geology and plant and animal life of the area.

                              Why the Owner Chose Terlingua:
This is our second vacation rental in Terlingua Ranch. We have lived all over the world and found nothing like the Big Bend.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Quiet, quiet, quiet. Birds, deer, javelinas. Views, stars, walks and drives down the scenic Terlingua Ranch roads, hikes up Christmas Mountains, swimming in Terlingua Ranch pool, grilling out, relaxing on the porch, trips into Big Bend National Park, restaurants, bars & live music in Terlingua. Mostly, just relaxing and 'getting away' from day to day stresses and routines.
