Wife and I really enjoyed our week at the Getaway. Previous reviewers were so right about how clean and updated the house was. We loved the remoteness and the quiet. The weather kept us in the house more than we expected but turned into wonderful reading time for both of us. We brought plenty to read but there were many books and magazines there, the biggest portion written about the area. There were cloudy, windy days with mist and one night and morning of heavy rain. Rain is always welcome in the desert. Also it was much cooler than we expected and we were not prepared for that on an extended basis. At times you could hear the wind whistling around the corners of the house but otherwise just solitude and the house was so well insulated it stayed warm and comfortable the whole stay. Loved the ceiling fans. Just about everything you need is stocked and really enjoyed and used the kitchen. There was a nice (looks new) store south of Study Butte on the right (west side of hwy) that covered anything we were short on. We got to meet Daryl when we drove up as he had just finished cleaning and we felt welcome from the beginning. Have to say, we will make an effort to return.

Here's the deal. Don't look anywhere else if you want the best Big Bend area experience of your life. In fact, you should just plan your visit around the availability of this rental. I cannot gush enough about the property ( immaculate, charming), the views( out of this world), the amenities ( I would add/subtract nothing), the location (perfect directions, and the best of the southwest) and the owners ( beyond helpful Because we canoed one day and hiked the next, we cooked all our meals at the GetAway in an extremely well equipped kitchen, so we don't have any reviews of restaurants. We were actually anxious to get back to the Getaway after our days out in the park, so that we could see the spectacular sunsets. And, may I say once again, relax under that heavenly canopy!! We even rose at 0300 to stargaze. Mars, Saturn and Venus! And the Milky Way! The hammock was perfect for that. For those of you with i-Pads, make sure you download the Sky Watcher app. You will love it. The photos do not do this home justice, It is beyond cute. The screened in porch is a real treat . Wonderful books on the area will add to your enjoyment and knowledge. The WiFi worked perfectly and we no trouble with a phone signal. There is not TV. Nor should there be. Just sit on the porch! This is great place for children who do not need TV or need to be entertained. You just need to know your children. Glorious.

Charming desert oasis

My family and I just returned from another delightful stay at the Big Bend Getaway. This is the third time we've stayed here and we always come away feeling relaxed, restored, and ready to face city life again. We like getting away from the city but we need our gadgets, and the cell coverage and wifi worked flawlessly. And as always, the home was clean and in perfect order when we arrived. There have been a few updates since we last visited earlier this year; new chairs in the dining room and some new dishes to to make preparing meals and storing leftovers even easier. But the best addition, in my humble opinion, has to be the new hammock. It's the perfect place for an afternoon siesta after a long hike. But my favorite time to lie in it is after the sun goes down, when you can watch a million stars twinkle into view. Magical. Thank you so much for providing such a wonderful desert oasis.

Fabulous Cabin!

My boyfriend & I just got back from our vacation at this cabin and I want to turn around and go right back. It was wonderful. The cabin is very well kept and nicely decorated. Drinking coffee on the porch in the peace and quiet was very relaxing. The grill has such an amazing view! The pool at the lodge was very nice and clean! All the amenities worked fine and the cabin was well stocked. Everyone we have met was really nice too! There are nice bike/hiking trails around the cabin too. Having no TV was refreshing. There are a few board games there to keep you entertained, scrabble nights were alot of fun! There is a restaurant down the road called Judys Bad Rabbit. We were hoping to have a chance to eat there but, unfortunately, we never had the chance to. Big Bend National Park is not far from the cabin. My favorite trail was the lost mine trail and grapevine. I would recommend this cabin to anyone and everyone. When we come back to Big Bend I hope to come back to this cabin!

Thank you once again for making the arrangements for our rental of the Big Bend Getaway. Everything worked fine; the house was comfortable, quiet, and nicely positioned with respect to the two parks. The countryside was beautiful, and we even got a bit of rain from tropical storm Don.

Family Fun

We rented the house for 4 days last month and had the BEST vacation! The house was exactly what we were looking for and perfect for our family. We spent most of our days exploring Big Bend and the surrounding areas and loved the location and solitude of the house. My kids loved to hike right outside the house as well. We enjoyed many star gazing nights and late evening sunsets as a family. The house is very clean and well maintained. We loved opening all the windows and enjoying the breeze that came through. The porch is perfect for evening views and enjoying dinner as a family. We spent most evenings at the lodge pool for a late day cool off swim and it is a nice benefit to be able to enjoy the pool as a guest. We will be back to Big Bend for many more family vacations and we are looking forward to staying in the house again!!

Delightful

My husband, young son (7 years old) and I just returned from our stay here and we had a wonderful time. The space was perfect for our little family and the setting is desert perfection. We arrived in the evening, and when we woke up on the first morning, we immediately had to go hiking. All the gorgeous scenery is just too enticing! The screened porch on the west side of the house is a lovely place to have breakfast. It's breezy and cool, even in May, and if you stay quiet, you can watch lots of interesting wildlife wander past. We loved hiking around the property, and drove into Big Bend NP a couple of times to hike around there as well. When the heat got strong in the late afternoon, we'd head over to the Terlingua Lodge for a swim in their nice cool pool. We wondered if the heat would be too much at this time of year, but were pleasantly surprised. A couple of times, when we were at the house in the late afternoon, we had to turn on the window a/c unit for a little while to keep it comfortable, but for the most part, we could just have the windows open and the breezes that blew through were enough to keep us cool. Or we'd just head out to the front porch, where it was shady and breezy in the afternoons. We never needed the air conditioning at night. We cooked in the house nearly every night and watched some spectacular moon rises from the front porch, as the bats swooped around above. The internet connection and cell signal worked very well at this location. The house was clean and comfortable. Thank you so much for the great desert retreat! We're looking forward to visiting again.

I wonder what can possibly miss in this house? All is available to make you feel like home in an amazing environment. Close to Big Bend national park, far away from modern world, yet confortable. This is really a very nice property in a beautiful environment with wild life. I wish this place was much closer from Plano, we would then go for long week end.

Just got back from a long weekend at this property, and I'm already finding myself looking at pictures of our trip and pining for a return. The Getaway is well stocked and comfy--the perfect place to just unwind and relax. The house is perfectly sized for a couple, but might be a bit of a tight squeeze for more than that. Loved the fact that there was no TV, but the fact that there's Wi-Fi and cellphone service keeps you as connected to reality as you want (or don't want) to be. The views are amazing, and the night sky is simply spectacular. We saw mule deer and even had a group of javelina come visit us a few times during our trip. Have already recommended this place to several friends, and would like to venture back there some day (when it's a bit warmer) myself.

I could stay there forever

I have always stayed at the Chisos Montain Lodge during my 25 years of coming to Big Bend. Never again. This home is the best - beautiful, solitude, fantastic views, excellently equipped, better than San Antonio for internet and telephone service. The best part was when a mule deer came up on the front porch one morning and looked in the window (great pictures). Hike from the front porch, or turn out the lights and look at a million stars. I came for the Chile Cook-off but hardly left the place. You can't beat it.

Relaxing and remote place to stay

This is an excellent place to stay if you are looking for somewhere to really unwind in a fairly isolated setting. It is a very nice small adobe house with attractive furnishings and decorations. The kitchen is fully stocked with all the dishes and cookware you will need. (Note: there is no dishwasher.) The view from the house is beautiful and you can just barely see a couple of other properties off in the distance- so the feeling is very private and isolated. You can do a little light hiking right from the property up a pretty good sized hill if you are inclined. The house is on Terlingua Ranch and at the time we were staying, we had access to the Terlingua Ranch pool. The house is well located within a decent distance from Big Bend and Terlingua. There is excellent stargazing at night. We didn't see any interesting creatures at the house, just a javelina, but I can see how there would be some wildlife around the house at other times of the year. We met the owner and he seemed like a very nice guy. My only criticism is that the bed was a little hard for my taste. There is no TV but your cell phone should work just fine.

This was our first trip to the Big Bend area, and we were truly blown away! The house and setting are so beautiful, it is almost unreal! While we did travel down to the Big Bend national park, just spending time at the house was a vacation in itself. There is also a great stash of books about the area that we enjoyed tremendously! I highly recommend this property! My favorite part of this whole trip was eating breakfast on the veranda, looking at the mountains change as the sun moved! The pictures on this site (while amazing) do not do this place justice, it really is a dream!

We stayed in late March 2010. The descriptions and pictures beautifully and accurately describe this wonderful remote property. The views over the valley from this elevated landscape are spectacular. The Getaway is clean and furnished with all the basics you will need to enjoy a week. It is close enough to Big Bend to enjoy the park as well but it is truly remote with an unbelieveable viewing of the night sky. We met one of the owners and he is a very nice man and you can tell he enjoys this property and taking care of it. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to really getting away from the city life and out into the wildnerness of Big Bend country and west Texas.

Beautiful view

We love this beautiful retreat home! We stayed there last Thanksgiving and are thinking about going again. It is so remote and quiet...a real retreat from the hectic life in a big city. You see deer when you wake up in the morning, waiting for sunrise before you fix breakfast. You count stars at night on the porch and listen to birds or some other animals singing. It is only minutes from The Big Bend National Park. The only problem we had was the sink had some draining issue, but we didn't get bothered by it.

Anne and I rented the retreat last year and had such a great time that we are doing it again - we leave tomorrow - woo hoo !!! In fact, we liked it so much that we also recommended it to a family member, who also had a great time there. Beautiful views, peace and quiet, lots of interesting wildlife - what's not to like ? The house is well kept and offers all the modern conveniences (except TV, thank God !), so it is perfect for everyone from "small families" to "adults needing a break from the grind". The fact that we are returning there and recommending it to family should tell you all you need to know about this fantastic vacation retreat. If you need some "time away", do not hesitate - book some time immediately !

We stayed at this rental for a week in May of 2009. This house is very nicely kept and had everything we needed during our stay, plus more! The views are spectacular. We witnessed much of the local wildlife from the porch. It is also very close to the Big Bend parks as well as Terlingua. We stayed for 4 nites and we had a wonderful time. It is everything that the owners says it is. A very relaxing and enjoyable house to stay in, just like home but with a beautiful view. We would highly recommend this property after seeing the other choice we didn't pick, this is a must stay if you are visiting Big Bend Nat'l Park. After a day of hiking this place is what you want to come home to. Relaxation.

Very happy with our choice to stay at this house. Very remote and quiet, to just sit and watch the mountain off the porch was the perfect getaway. Better than any other rentals, including those in Big Bend that we saw. Stayed for four nights while we hiked and toured the area. Fully outfitted kitchen and nice house. Loved it!

Perfect combination of solitude, beauty, comfort and wildness. We spent a week here hiking the desert, rafting the Rio Grande and exploring back roads. This home is beautiful, comfortable and wifi connected in a wild and rugged setting. Cactus wrens, baby javelinas, and mule deer were our closest neighbors. A perfect vacation for our family of 4.

What a wonderful home. My wife and I rented this property for a two night stay with our three children, ages 9 to 13. Beautiful house and experience all round. Great views and location near to Big Bend. We would recommend this house to everyone.
