This unique property sits on 40 acres at the East end of Lake Isabella, 10 miles East of the town Lake Isabella just off Hwy 178. This location is half way between Las Vegas and San Francisco about 2 1/2 hours north of Los Angeles. The Hillside Ranch has the illusion of remoteness, but is only a quarter mile away from a super market and gas station, and only 20 minutes away from Kernville. Kernville is the main town about 20 minutes away where rafting and fishing trips can be booked. Enjoy a sanctuary that offers peace and quiet, with unobstructed views of the lake and mountains. Enjoy the beautiful estate-sized lawns surrounded by hundreds of trees for shade and privacy. By day watch your kids play and by night roast marshmallows at the open fire pit.
These historically charming, 1930's style homes were moved onto the property in 1950 from the town of Whiskey Flat, "Kernville" the houses have been a part of the Hillside Ranch and Kern River Valley history for almost a hundred years. Why the Owner Chose South Lake
In 1994 after looking all over California for about 10 years in hopes of finding an old farm house I could fix up, I stumbled across this property and fell in love. The spot looked pretty good to me, I thought it had great potential. And what the hell, the price was right, so I bought it and started planting trees. It didn't looked to good in those days but I thought with a little hard work, I’d have this place whipped into shape in 5 years, tops. The year was 1994, I was 44 years old, in good health, and ready to go.
Now in 2010, I’m 60 years old and I’ve been bit, stung and sun burned more times then I can remember. Remarkably my health is still pretty good, but shockingly I’m still not done. But, I’m not giving up either. Anyway, it’s been a labor of love, I hope you have as much fun playing here, as I have had working here.
The Unique Benefits at this House
It is very quiet and the view ain't bad either.
Local ski area with two chair lifts and tube rides. They rent all equipment. It's about 45 minutes to 1 hour away from the Ranch depending on road conditions.
A 1 1/2 drive north out of Kernville takes you to "the Walk of a Hundred Giants" a 1 mile trail that winds it's way through these magnifcent trees. www.visitkern.com/sequoias.asp

I am a retired sound effects editor from the film industry. I am married with two children. I have been a Mr. Mom, a carpenter, a drywall hanger, a handyman, a potter, a hippie, a college drop out, a landscape gardener, a traveler, a surfer, a tennis player, made a couple of short films and wrote 5 bad screenplays. That's not all but I don't want to brag. My wife has done a bunch of stuff too but she won't talk about it.... that's probably a good idea.

We noticed that no one appears to have written and review in the past few months, so first of all this is to confirm this is a great place to stay. It’s quiet, seemingly rural but only 2 min drive to the local store and 10mins drive to the town of Lake Isabella or 20min drive to KernVille. If you have an hour or two then a drive around the whole lake is worth doing. We stayed in late September so missing the busy season when eveyone heads for the lake to cool down and spend time on the lake. For us it was about peace, quiet and a time just to sit on the terrace enjoy the views and read books. In the evening it was BBQs, wine and good conversation. The Yellow house has great Wifi so even here we were never out of contact with the office. Bruce was a great host, the three properties on the ranch are obviously a labour of love and have been well maintanced with mod cons while still retaining their antique charm.
Recommended for:Romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children.

I have stayed in 2 of the 3 houses at The Hillside Ranch twice now, and they are amazing. The views from the houses and their front porches are among the best in the west. 180 degree views of Lake Isabella spread from the west to north to east. Beyond the lake are many mountain peaks and ridges that change color, visual texture, and hue as the sun moves across the sky. The hour before sunset and half hour after sunset are visual delights. The houses are very comfortable, designed for easy living. There are fishing, boating, river rafting and other lake activities. One can take beautiful drives through the nearby mountains and visit many interesting places. In spring the wild flowers are stunning. There are many fabulous hiking trails in the area and the Forest Service staff is most helpful in finding informing hikers and mountain bike riders of the ways to enjoy them. I cannot speak highly enough about this property. I stayed two nights the first time and three nights the second, and I'll be back next year.

These are great houses! Recently my husband and I spent a weekend in the blue house and absolutely loved it. The owner did a great job refurbishing it. It is a charming small home--perfect for two or four. The views are absolutely wonderful as is the setting. Nature surrounds the area and it feels remote. Next time I go back I might try the yellow house as it is just as cute as the blue house--just different. It is for 2-4 people as well. The red house can hold more people so it is fine for larger groups.

We loved our mini vacation at this fabulous ranch! The house was adorable, tastefully restored, and clean as could be. The views were incredible - I felt like we had traveled to a ranch in Montana after only 2 & 1/2 hours driving from Los Angeles. The bathroom was beautifully tiled with a nice deep soak tub, the kitchen was charming and fully functional with a lovely O"keefe & Merit stove, and the living areas were comfy and well thought out. We brought our dog and he had the best time taking leash-free walks along the acreage, listening, sniffing, trotting, and chasing rabbits. Although the property is pet friendly, I noticed no pet hair nor had any allergy symptoms (which I often do with any pet other than my own). Each day was blissfully relaxing, with nice walks beginning just outside the front door, reading or cooking or watching one of the many great movies in the DVD library in the house. We ended each night enjoying a homecooked meal and sitting beside the gorgeous, enormous outdoor fire bowl. We can't wait to return!
