My daughter and I spent a week in Richards condo and fell in love with it!! The condo, although small, was a perfect size for the two of us. Richard went out of his way to accommodate our late flight arrival to save us from having to stay in a hotel the first night. That kindness is who Richard is. Thank-you :) Everything is clean and bright and fairly quiet. Most comfortable stay. Easy walking distance to every downtown attraction and super close to the train station!! We could walk about and enjoy tapas and shopping and the life that fills the streets all day and night then retire to our condo for a good rest. I will suggest El Gato Verde which is a pub just a block up from the condo for the best gin and tonics and the best mojito canadio made with canary island honey rum. Both owners speak English well enough. Well we enjoyed our stay, the accommodation were great for rest and sightseeing, and had the best rates!!

My husband and I stayed in this wonderful apartment for 5 days. It is very clean, comfortable and Richard the owner is extremely friendly and helpful. We easily walked to the major galleries, plazas and the Atocha train station. The neighbourhood is vibrant full of wonderful restaurants and a great market and grocery store. We took a day trip to Toledo,an amazing city.It is well worth a visit. We highly recommend the Museo Thyssen Bornemisza if you appreciate great works of art.So happy to have stayed in this apartment....just perfect!

My daughter and I stayed at Richard's apartment for three nights. It was perfect--clean, well supplied and in a great location. Having the WiFi was a real plus. Richard was very helpful during the whole rental process and gave lots of info at check in. The three flights of stairs helped work off all the delicious tapas we ate! Would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.

We had a great time in Madrid. The apartment was centrally located to many of the attractions and was the perfect size for the three of us. Richard's directions were exact and his son was very helpful - giving us some places to buy our groceries since we ate breakfast in every morning and recommended a tapas bar that was nearby. The apartment was clean and the kitchen stocked with some staples. We appreciated having Wi-Fi. We would recommend the apartment - just be aware that there are 3 flights of stairs to climb.

Everything we needed. Nothing more. Perfect. My wife slept in the bedroom and our college age daughter was comfortable on the couch/futon in the living room. There's a TV we didn't watch, and WIFI. The best thing is the location. Not ritzy, but a quiet street within walking distance of the train station, and all the good stuff. The owner spent plenty of quality time with us when we arrived, getting us acclimated to where we were. Very helpful.

My husband, daughter and I stayed in Richard's apartment for a week and thoroughly enjoyed it. The best part is the location. It was a short walk to Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, El Rastro, the Prado and much more. We were able to walk to Atocha station to catch the Ave when we left. There are many stairs and the shower stall is small, but we would definitely recommend the apartment.

Tis aptp was extrememly clean, comfy and the owner most knowledgeable and helpful. The neighborhood is vibrant, many restaurants and bars, but the street is quiet and the balcony doors can eliminate all outside sounds if desired. This seems a very non-touristy and yet an easy walk to the Prado, the Retiro, the Reina Sophia and the T-B and more. I would happily stay here again!

I can't say enough good things about this flat's owner, Richard, and the amazing service he gave us. Even before we arrived, Richard's detailed instructions gave us confidence that we could navigate right to the flat with no problem. Richard met us as we walked down the street towards the flat and he immediately started acclimating us to the city. After touring us through the flat and its amenities he sat down and gave us some pointers about the city, some places to go, and detailed instructions about how to get there. Richard was also amazingly attentive when we had a small problem with the wi-fi. He jumped on the problem and did everything in his power (and then some!) to get the issue solved. He really, truly was a fantastic owner and resource. I would gladly stay in any of his flats again. The flat itself is very centrally located to most major sites in Madrid. The Prado, Plaza Mayor, Sol and many other spots were in easy walking distance. The Reina Sofia was MAYBE 5 minutes away. If you didn't feel like walking there was a Metro stop about 7 minutes from the flat - an easy stroll. The one bedroom in the flat was quite adequate to our needs. The sofa in the living area opens into a bed that is probably even more comfortable than the one found in the main bedroom! The washing machine worked very well, as did the dryer: the hot Madrid sun! The only warning about the flat I have is that it is up a few flights of stairs, and the flat's building is towards the bottom of a hill. If you can't easily do stairs or a hill then you should try someplace else... but know that you're missing a nice flat in a great location with a fantastic owner. I'd rent this flat again in a heartbeat... and will surely do so if I ever visit Madrid again.

The apartment is centrally located with two metro stations within minutes and a 10 minute walk to the main train station. The apartment is relatively small but adequate. The bedroom does get hot at times (AC is in the living room). A small fan would have allowed us to lower the AC in the living room. Older or with heart conditions should avoid as the apartment is 3 flights up the stairs.

The location of this apartment is central to everything in Madrid--that is one can as easily walk to Royal palace in one direction (or Plaza Mayor) as to the Prado and Retiro Park in another. The wonderful Madrid subway is just two blocks away and the best district for Tapas bars etc is no more than 4. Madrid is a must do city. That said, this is a very spartan and tiny apartment--a three floor (6 flights of stairs) walk-up, with the most basic of furniture and cooking facilities and it is in a street that itself is not at all appealing. Safe, but not attractive. Still as noted the attractive areas are nearby. Just be aware that this is muy basico and the low price reflects that.

The owner was very pleasant and helpful with information about Madrid, and how to navigate the city. This was my second trip to Madrid, but my first stay at this apartment. Located close to many places of interest, either walking or taking the metro. i have two more planned trips to Madrid, and will be staying at this apartment for both trips to Madrid. The apartment is cozy, maintained well. Photographs and description are accurate, Only minor hindrance is many flights of stairs to climb to get to the apartment, if traveling light ( minimal luggage ) this is not a problem.

We had a great time in this apartment. Richard the host greeted us and was very helpful in person and via email prior to our stay. The apartment was very comfortable and neat, with lots of natural light. It had air conditioning, washing machine with detergent provided, which was useful for us. We travelled with our two year old daughter. Oh on on fourth floor, no bother for us though, helped work off some chocolate and churros. Good location, we only walked to all destinations and to train station for AVE departure. I would recommend this apartment to friends, because it was excellent value for money, good location, pleasant apartment and clean. Our last place in Seville was not good which was an apartment through a hotel and cost more, so this was a pleasant surprise.

The apartment matched our expectations. All the listed features were present. Very nice and helpful host. Subway, shops, and many interesting places (park, museums etc.) within a walking distance. City district is not amongst the most famous or prestigous, but that is not a problem at all. For me and my wife this apartment was a great choice.

We were a group of 4 women and the size of the apartment was perfect. Richard was a great host and met us on the day of our arrival. He gave us a lot of excellent suggestions and advice for our stay. The apartment is conveniently located within close walking distance to the Reina Sofia as well as other attractions. We had some issues with warm water on our first evening. However, subsequent day time showers were alright as 2 of us showered in the evening and 2 of us in the morning.

We recently stayed in this apartment for 6 nights with our 10-month-old daughter. It met all our needs and we had a very comfortable stay. It is centrally located so we could walk to all the sites without needing to take public transit, and it is on a quiet side street without the big city noise. It was very clean and had what we needed for travel with a baby -- nicely equipped kitchenette with a stove, microwave, toaster, & kettle (no oven), washing machine with outdoor clothesline, a heater-A/C unit, a portable crib/cot with sheets (on request), a hairdryer for me (on request). There is a big supermarket and an outdoor marketplace nearby. Richard was very helpful and accommodating. The only issue was the small hot water tank (and the small stand-up shower!). We bathed our daughter in the kitchen sink, and got a good workout taking her up and down the 3 flights of stairs in her stroller. I would recommend this apartment to friends.

We had a very positive experience staying in the apartment--and we have already recommended it to friends. The location is perfect for getting around Madrid. We walked everywhere. We had a little bit of hesitation when we saw the photos on Google Earth because of the graffiti on the walls outside, but realized later that the graffiti is common in Madrid, it doesn't mean that the neighborhood is unsafe. We felt safe in the building and safe walking around Madrid. The price of the apartment for 4 adults is really a good deal. We considered hostels, but this was a much better option, and even less expensive than some of the hostels we considered. Very cost saving to make our own breakfast in the apartment, too. Richard was great to work with. He offered great information pertaining the surrounding area, places to eat, things to do, ways to experience Madrid like a local. This helped us have a great vacation. We will visit again, and do more of the same. The apartment is small, but slept and fed 4 adults comfortably. We didn't plan to spend time indoors, so the size was just right for the price. After reading other reviews, were careful with our length of showers and even the small amount of hot water available was not a problem for us. We highly recommend renting 177293 for your stay in Madrid. And be sure to ask Richard for local recommendations!

The location is truly excellent for walking site seers. Richard's time estimates walking to destinations are generous as we found ourselves at our destination well before we anticipated. The street is quiet, we did have noise from a neighbor and thought they sounded as if we were in the same apartment. Noise was the exception not the rule. The place was very clean and all the amenities worked very well. Brevity is your watch word in the shower. Richard's orientation to the apartment and the area was great! His friendly nature put us at ease. We had a concern over forgotten medication and Richard was forth coming with concern and practical help. We would certainly stay here again and will recommend Richard and his apartment to our friends.

My wife & I had a very pleasant stay at this property! The location is great (near the triangle of museums, a number of jazz clubs, Metro stops, local shops for light groceries and restaurants) AND it's slightly off the beaten path so quiet. The stairs to the 3rd floor are quite manageable, the bed comfortable and the shower small but good pressure (hot water started dropping off at the end of the 2nd shower, so don't read a book it in). Highly recommended.

What you see from photos is exactly how the apartment is. Very clean. There were four of us women and we slept comfortably, the sofa bed opening to a double bed. Very strong, reliable wifi connection, a must for us. Location is great, close to Aston Martin metro stop and round the corner are stores where you'll find fruits, veggies, drinks, etc. And as Richard says, tons of restaurants around the area. Richard was there waiting for us considering we were over an hour late in arriving. He took time to show us the apartment and explain the general area where we are located. Apartment is on the 3rd/4th floor (US), a pain for us because we had heavy luggages, but definitely not a deal breaker. Would definitely recommend this apartment. Thanks for the stay Richard and for being understanding about those drinking glasses.

I have stayed for three weeks in August 2011. Everything was the way it had been described on the web-site. The apartment is well designed, and it is located in the central part of the historical city of Madrid. There is a bedroom, a lounge dinner (with a sofa), a bathroom (shower, sink, toilet) and a full kitchen. I could connect my laptop computer to the Internet, and I could use Skype all the time (24/7). In the kitchen everything worked as expected. The air-conditioning was effective and essential. For groceries, Carrefour Market is just a few minutes away. Next time I come to Madrid I will try again this apartment.

We chose this apartment both because of its location and the reviews it had received. It proved to be exactly what we wanted. The apartment itself is compact but we never felt overcrowded and it has everything you need. The air-co was effective and in July absolutely essential. We used the bedroom and the sofa bed, both of which were comfortable ( a suggestion is to put the duvet over the mattress of the sofa bed as there's a bit of a ridge in the middle otherwise. This worked perfectly and the sofa bed was very comfortable). We semi- rationed the hot water according to Richard's instructions but all 3 of us managed to shower without it running out. The place was clean, well-equipped and well maintained. Richard, the owner, as everyone else says, is extremely helpful and gave us some good suggestions - the O'baraquino, just up the road ( probably spelt that wrong) was great for lunch on our final day and cheap! The location was terrific. First impressions on arrival in the afternoon were that the area looked a little run down as most of the places around were closed for the afternoon with shutters down, most of which were covered in graffiti but come the evening when they opened again, the place was transformed -lively and vibrant. There are a couple of really friendly local bars, ideal for a nightcap on the way home. We felt safe in the area. Everything was within walking distance - Prado, Reina Sofia and botanic Gardens are 10-15 mins walk away, the Plaza Mayor, Palace and Cathedral - 20 minutes or so. would have no hesitation in recommending this apartment and may indeed try to book again ( husband is now very keen to come back to Madrid after living here for a few years in the '70s) as it is the ideal base to experience much of what Madrid has to offer. Thanks, Richard, for helping make this a memorable trip.

My husband & I spent a wonderful 3 nights here. The apartment is somewhat small, but very clean, comfortable, and has everything one might need. Richard was a gracious host, waiting for us when we arrived, and explaining everything about the apartment and the neighborhood. He recommended tapas bars and restaurants, and directed us to the 2 nearby metro stops, the grocery store, and a church. It was so much more interesting staying in a neighborhood like this one than in a hotel. The weekend night life was exciting, but the apartment is soundproof, so we had no trouble sleeping. The apartment also had some travel books and maps, which were a big help as we planned our days. We thoroughly enjoyed staying there and would not hesitate to recommend it to others.

My husband and I stayed at this apartment for a week. Richard took a lot of time to answer our Madrid questions and tell us about the neighborhood. We walked almost everywhere - to all the Museums; to plaza Santa Ana most nights for "cocteles" (coctails), tapas, and dinner; to the Retiro park; to the grocery store. It's close to 2 metro stations, but the weather was nice and most sights were close by. The apartment is a great size for a couple. The kitchen is well stocked and the apartment is clean and well maintained. I did laundry and hung it out to dry. We bought fruit and "napoletanos" (chocolate coissants) for breakfast while returning from our day of touring Madrid, then relaxed at home drinking cava before wandering out for dinner.

This lively neighborhood gave me a sense of how Madrilenos actually live, which seems to me one of the main reasons to opt for an apartment rental instead of a hotel. I especially liked the traditional food market next to the historic cinema (just two blocks up). The apartment is spotless and an easy walk to what you want to see. The owner was a pleasure to deal with, not just because of his genuine concern that you have a good stay, but also because he obviously enjoys meeting people. While the street noise did go on a bit Fri. night, I would say that it also provided a certain entertainment value--plus a reminder that this is Madrid!

My father and I spent a week here over Spring Break and we both had a great time. The location is very centrally located and close to two different metro lines. The surrounding area also feels very local and really introduced us to what it means to live in Madrid. It is close to many great museums, shops and restaurants. Richard was extremely thorough and helpful in explaining all about the apartment and making sure we were situated. The apartment itself is small but very well equipped with everything we needed and the wifi is great. And while the area was quiet, the neighbors were rather noisy on some nights, but it was not a big problem, especially since we went to bed quite late. Overall, we had a great time and would definitely rent here again.

Even while I was still inquiring about booking the apartment, Richard was already very helpful and responsive to all my queries. So it was no surprise what a gracious host he was when he met us in the apartment. He gave us a useful orientation of the amenities as well as the surrounding area. We appreciated that basics like salt, sugar, oil, toilet paper, dishwashing detergent were provided. The unit was very clean, and the area it was in was quiet. The shower area was really small though and hot water sometimes ran out - but Richard did warn us about this! The location is excellent and is the real selling point of the apartment. It is close to Reina Sofia, 2 metro stations: Anton Martin and Lavapies and train/bus station: Puerta Atocha. We walked to the station on our last day to catch a train, and we just rolled our bags. Except for the first street which was uphill everything else was downhill! There are lots of restaurants around to eat in, even Plaza Mayor is walking distance where you should NOT miss Chocolateria de San Gines for the best churros/chocolate! We had a great time in Madrid, and would definitely recommend this property to a friend! Thanks again Richard !

Our family of three stayed here for 3 nights and we were glad we rented this apartment instead of getting a hotel room. The apartment is small, but clean and well-maintained. We felt that the decision to rent this apartment was so much better than staying at a hotel, in terms of both convenience and value! The owner, Richard Barrow, was extremely helpful in getting us oriented, especially with information about the Bohemian neighborhood, local cafes, places to see, and things to do... and even making the arrangements for the taxi back to the airport on the day of our departure. We found the location very convenient with metro stations (Anton Martin, Lavapies) nearby and essentially within walking distance (15-20 minutes) of all major attractions: Museo del Prado, Plaza Mayor, Palacio Real, Puerta del Sol, Gran Via, Plaza de Santa Ana, and so on. We had lunch at Casa Lastra at Calle del Olivar, 3 and had dinner and saw a flamenco show at Casa Patas at Calle de Cañizares, 10 - - both were good and both are very close to the apartment. For bread, jamon etc for breakfast we shopped at both the Mercado Anton Martin (very close to the apartment) and the Carrefours near Lavapies metro station. If we return to Madrid, we'd certainly rent this apartment again.

The apartment is very nice, very clean, in a clean building. It is comfortable for three and very well equipped. The owner was very helpful and provided lots of information. It's close to the sights, shopping and to Atocha Station. The area itself is a bit run down. If some of your party likes long showers, the hot water will run out... I would recommend it to others. We liked most the Pad Thai restaurant nearby.

We stayed here for 6 days in late January 2011. As others have mentioned, Richard was very helpful with tips about local activities and practicalities. The location was convenient both to the Metro options and walking to all central-Madrid tourist attractions in a fascinating neighborhood with plenty of cafes, groceries, and a market closeby. Apartment was clean and well stocked; internet worked well. There are quite a few steps to reach apartment. This didn't bother us at all (I'm 60), but would be difficult for people with limited mobility. We'll definitely try to rent again when I return to Madrid.

Everything functioned beautifully, especially Richard. He was eager to make our visit with our two boys enjoyable and productive. His generous advice helped us to see the Rastro, Reina Sofia museum, Plaza Mayor, Barrio Lavapies and Retiro park all in just 3 days and all walkable from the apartment. As apartment owners ourselves, we learned a few things about caring for clients and keeping a place running well. It was an excellent value for the money also. Greg and Fina Granada, Spain

My wife and I stayed at this apartment for eight days at the end of November/early December and had a great, great time. The apartment is just as advertised- perfectly located- close to two Metro lines, lots of excellent restaurants/bars, museums, shopping, sightseeing, etc. The neighborhood is fantastic- aside from being 100% safe- even late, late at night- it is just a classic area. The street is even listed in a Madrid guidebook as a "must-see"- what more can I say? The apartment is very well appointed- it has everything you would need for a short or long-term stay. The photos shown are 100% accurate. The owner, Richard, is just the icing on the cake. Aside from being a really good and interesting guy, he is a great asset to the visitor with tons of helpful information- from places to eat and drink to tips on the best side trips to take- and lots in between!. His orientation chat was really valuable to us as first-time visitors to Madrid- really helped us make the most of our time and added to our enjoyment of the trip. In addition- he makes himself available as a resource if you need him. When we had an issue with our flight home (Lufthansa cancelled our connection out of Madrid), Richard went out of his way to help. We have used VRBO many times around the world, and Richard is at the top of the "good" list for all the effort he puts into taking care of his guests. Take a look at his place- you will not be disappointed.

Great location -- from airport(via express), to all points of interest and to Atocha train station are all manageable. My wife and I stayed there for 6 nights and walked to most of the places we wanted to visit. Of course, T10 helps, as Richard suggested. This is definitely a right choice for us as an first-timer in Madrid. It's a wonderful experience for us!!

I spent 18 days at this apartment in the Lavapies district. It was easy walking to either the Lavapies(line 3) or Anton Martin(line 1) metro stops. It was easy to use the kitchen to make meals. It has a 2-burner stove, microwave, toaster, small fridge. A great neighborhood market is close to the Anton Martin metro stop and there is a Carrefour market at Lavapies. It's easy to walk to El Prado Museum, Reina Sofia Museum, or El Retiro central park. I found it to be a very safe location and quiet location. The living room has a small balcony and the bathroom window opens to a courtyard. I would have no hesitation to stay here again. The owner gave me a good orientation and was available if I had any questions; he had even sent me information about taking the metro from the airport to the apartment. To me the apartment was an easy way to feel at home in a relaxed neighborhood. There isn't a lift (elevator) but I am 60 and had no problems with the stairs.

Regresaremos.

We had such a great time in Madrid. The apartment is so well located that we could easily walk to all the major attractions. Richard was so helpful and really made us feel welcome. Richard provided us excellent directions from the airport via the Metro. The apartment was close to shopping, restaurants, the Metro and even a Carrefour (grocery store). I always read through property reviews before renting and all the reviews for this property are spot on. We would definitely recommend this if you are staying in Madrid.

We stayed in the apartment in the fall of 2010. Overall, we found it a good place to stay. The biggest plus was the location. While our initial impression of the neighborhood was that it was somewhat run down, this was probably due to a fair amount of construction going on. The apartment is reasonably close to several subway stops and within easy walking distance of many restaurants and stores. For the more intrepid walkers, it is not that far for many tourist attractions. The other major plus is Richard Barrow, who was most helpful in providing information about getting around Madrid. When we arrived, he did not leave until we had asked, and gotten answers to, all of our questions. The apartment itself was very clean. It is small but given the reasonable price that is not surprising. The bed was comfortable, there was space to sit and read, and the kitchen had all the basics we needed. The only aspect of the smallness that was bothersome was the shower. You have to move very gingerly in it lest you bump into something.

The apartment is nicely furnished, extremely clean and well-supplied with basic items for washing and cooking. It is fairly close to subway stops on two different lines, and within a short walking distance of the three important art museums in Madrid. Guests should know that it is in a hilly area, so any neighbourhood strolls require a lot of up and down! There is a good grocery store close by for all your food needs, and the host is extremely helpful and informative about aspects of the neighbourhood and Madrid in general. I enjoyed my time there tremendously!

After getting into Madrid, with my plane delayed over 12 hours, Richard was gracious enough to pick me up from the airport at 4:00am (morning), and drive me to the apartment. He even had the energy to explain where to get grocery, where the museum's were, where the market was, all the various plaza's, and how to work his wifi. He was extremely helpful - the best, and I have been travelling a lot! Great apartment, very clean, and in the center of everything. I walked everywhere. Thanks so much Richard!

The location was great and very close to the local area as well as the central area(SOL) .The train station was about 5 min walk so you are able to get anywhere you want. Richard was more than helpful he told us the local places to go as well as the tourist areas . His advice was really helpful. The only down side to the apartment is the stairs becasue it is on the 3rd or 4th floor (I am not sure )but you have to carry your luggage and that was the only hustle we had besides that the place was perfect. Thank you Richard for all your help and hospitality

My sister gets the credit for finding this apartment on a last-minute whim. The apartment is nicely finished and everything is in fine working condition. It is also within walking distance of a supermarket and a subway stop. We felt very safe at night and there was next to no noise if you're a light sleeper. Richard was very helpful in showing us around the apartment and it was very nice meeting him.

My wife and I had a great experience in Richard's apartment. The apartment worked fantastically well for us. It has a great location and is close to virtually everything. The apartment was very clean and practical with lots of neighborhood grocery stores, restaurants, bars, and shops. It was a valuable experience for us to live like the people of the neighborhood live. Most of all, we felt very safe. Many times, we were out late. We never felt threatened at all. I would definitely recommend this apartment to others. It was perfect for one or two people. Also, Richard is a fantastic host who gave us a lot of tips on where to go and how to get there. It was truly a great experience for us.

The location is perfect! You will find that your sleep will not be interrupted by vehicular or pedestrian traffic and the neighbors are pretty much all locals. If you would like to experience the local favorites, head south. If the dance clubs interest you, head north. The photos are very accurate! The place was immaculate when I arrived and the amenities were all new and in fantastic working condition. The place is very well equipped and you are unlikely to feel that anything is lacking. It is super clean, very well maintained and it even smelled great! The owner was very helpful, extremely patient and was gracious enough to show me around the area. He was great in helping me gain my bearings in Madrid. I definitely plan on contacting him again when I visit Madrid. I have some family that hopes to visit. I will be passing the information on so that they may stay here. If you enjoy dancing, try 'Joy Eslava' or 'Kapital.' They are large clubs with moderately high cover charges, but Joy Eslava was well worth it. For food and drink I recommend 'Taberna del Marciano.' The people there are great and they respond really well to moderate or generous gratuities. They took very good care of us! For some great local spots, ask the owner. He will be able to direct you to some great places. A great place to visit on a Saturday during the day is 'Parque Retiro.' The entire experience was great and the accommodations were inviting, relaxing and a pleasure to arrive to at the end of each day (or early in the morning after las discotecas). Highly recommended! =)
