Ashe Splash is a beautiful, all-Dade County-pine, two-storey house on Ashe Street, one of the quietest, most residential streets in Key West's historic Old Town near Truman Avenue. Within a three minute walk you will find a specialty grocery, wine/liquor shop, renowned deli/caterer, Sandy's famous Cuban sandwich and coffee cafe and many other amenities. Key West life at its finest!
Sorry, but the minimum rental is 30 days. This minimum is mandated by law.
Ashe Splash was featured in the November/December 2008 issue of Cottage Living magazine under the title, "We Evoked the Best of Old Key West."
The house was meticulously restored in 2006 and, in 2007, awarded a coveted ceramic star, the highest preservation award, by the Old Island Restoration Foundation. The spacious rooms are built entirely of wood—even the ceilings—in the tradition of original Key West architecture. Antique flooring and details are paired with three new baths and a state-of-the-art kitchen with stainless appliances, offering you charm AND comfort.
The first floor of the house consists of a breezy front porch, the kitchen and a large living room that opens onto a bricked pool area. On this floor, there is a bath and bedroom that converts to a den by storing the queen size murphy bed behind louvered doors. The second floor has two large bedrooms with baths en suite. Each bedroom has a porch, shaded by palms, overlooking Ashe Street or the pool. The lighted, heated pool is surrounded by garden lights, inviting you to take an evening swim.
Tropical colors and accessories add to the authentic Key West experience.

Ashe Splash--Award-Winning Classic Monthly Rental
Year Purchased: 2004
Why the Owner Chose Private Homes, Old Town
There's so much to do in Key West, from the many beaches to golf and sailing and snorkeling and kayaking through mangrove swamps. The Winfreys partake of some of these activities, of course, but also just enjoy riding their bikes around Key West (Carey loves to take photographs of the many unique houses and gardens) and sampling the town's many wonderful restaurants. They also frequently patronize the wonderful Tropic Cinema, just off Duval Street, which specializes in quirky independent movies.
The Unique Benefits at this Single Family House
The Winfreys' Ashe Street house is in the Old Town section of Key West close to the cemetery (high ground) and to bustling Truman Avenue in a quiet residential neighborhood far (one mile) from touristy (and sometimes noisy) Duval street. The house is close to Fausto's, Old Town's grocery store, and to Sandy's, where Carey gets his morning Cuban cafe con leche and is in walking distance to at least a dozen good restaurants.
Owner's Map of Private Homes, Old Town
Jane and Carey live most of the year in Washington, D. C., where Carey is the editor of Smithsonian magazine. But they try to spend at least one full month of the year, plus several short visits, in Key West, which they fell in love with in 1999. It's the balmy breezes and funky architecture, of course, but also the laissez faire attitude of the town's diverse citizens, where tolerance and creativity are daily watchwords. And the air is not to be believed (except in summer when it's all too believable, but bearable thanks to central air conditioning). The first house they bought, in 1999, and did over is on Frances Street and is rented out on a year-round basis. It was perfect, and they loved it unreservedly, especially for the long weekends and occasional week-long vacations they were able to make use of it. But as Carey began to contemplate retirement, Jane realized it would be too small for more extended visits, especially if they involved the grandchildren Jane and Carey hope, one day, to have. So in 2004, at the top of the market (natch), they bought the Ashe Street house now listed on VRBO. It turned out to be a complete gut job, which thanks to the intervention of a couple of ferocious hurricanes, took about two years and twice their budget, But hey, it turned out great.
