Location: St. Roman de Malegarde, Provence, France, Europe (35 Kms from Avignon, 1.5 Hours Drive from Marseille)
Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4)
St Roman de Malegarde nestles in an area surrounded by mountains including Mont Ventoux in beautiful Provencal countryside with fields of vineyards, fruit trees, melons, lavender and sunflowers. The village is small but very picturesque and like all French villages has its own mairie (town hall). You will find the mairie in the village square which has a fountain and beautiful plaine trees providing shade from the summer heat.
There are no shops in the village but you can buy fresh bread from the friendly café/restaurant – Chez Claudette. She makes lovely coffee and serves an excellent set meal at lunchtime. Our house is in the heart of the old village and next to a 17th century fountain with delicious cold water from an underground spring and a cobbled pathway that takes you up towards the old 13th century church.
The house is very old and has been renovated in keeping with the style of the area. It has an open plan living room/kitchen with a modest but fully equipped and functional kitchen.
There are two double bedrooms simply but attractively furnished, one with a double bed on the top floor and the other has two single beds. The top bedroom leads onto the roof terrace, which has excellent views of the village and surrounding mountains and is equipped with garden furniture. It provides an ideal setting to enjoy the evening with a glass of wine while watching the stars.
The nearest shops (wonderful boulangerie and patisserie and excellent butcher and deli and small supermarkets) are in Tulette just 4kms away and a little further are larger supermarkets. Many of the surrounding villages have an outdoor market and these are absolutely fantastic with fresh fruit and vegetables, meats, bread, olives, cheese, Provencal fabrics, souvenirs and much more. You can sit in a café and watch the world go by. And of course I must not forget to mention the Cote du Rhone wines.
There is easy access to municipal swimming pools, rivers and the sea is about an hour and half’s drive away. There is much to see in this area; the Camargue, the Roman ruins in Vaison La Romaine, the amphitheatre in Orange (where you can see incredible concerts), the Palais des Papes in Avignon, Arles, mountain walks or breathtaking cycles (the Tour de France often passes by in the area) and the list can go on. In July there is the famous Avignon cultural festival and many villages have their own festivals worth visiting. It is a very special part of Provence and our home provides a place to relax and a base from which to explore this beautiful part of the world.
