Our guest house is in close proximity to our home. We have build these houses over the last 20 years. The house rented is a three story rustic house with lots of light and windows. Most of the interior is wood. There are many stairs and we suggest children visiting be at least 5 years of age. A dog should be physically able to climb stairs also.
We are a middle-aged couple of artists/teacher. Norm is an astronomer (run's the observatory at Leelanau School where he works) he will help your family identify constellations when you sit around the bonfire. Mimi (who is Danish) is a chocolatier and owns a small nearby chocolate business. Our children are grown and have moved away and occasionally will visit. We have a quiet and very friendly 'princess cat' on the premises. The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is next to our 40 acre property, and Lake Michigan and Glen Lake are only minutes away.

This was our second time staying in the house and we loved it. The location in the middle of the woods is perfect for our dogs, a nature boy, and my tree guy husband. Another advantage of the location is that you can get to both the south and the north portions of the park quickly via Benzonia Trail without having to go through Empire. The house has a lot of rustic charm and is really unique. My son loved all the secret hiding places, my husband enjoys reading in the sunken family room, my parents enjoy sitting on the porch listening to the birds and watching for deer, and I appreciate the strong internet connection to do some work. The owners are very sweet people, who make you feel welcomed. A great house for an awesome price in America's most beautiful place. We hope to come back for many more times.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Thank you so much! We look forward to seeing you back up here soon!

My husband and I and our dogs spent an all-too-brief vacation at Bard's Hill and would recommend it to anyone who's looking for a unique, pet-friendly vacation retreat. The sensitively-designed and craftsman-built cottage shares a site with the hosts'' home and another cottage, but there is plenty of privacy coupled with the opportunity to meet the very engaging hosts. The cottage is roughly equi-distant from Empire and Glen Arbor. Although a bit out of the way, the location is actually one of its charms. If you enjoy quiet walks through beautiful forest, a peaceful afternoon on the porch and still want easy access to the best of Leelanau, you won't regret choosing Bard's Hill, provided you heed the hosts' caution about stairs. The multiple levels of the cottage are part of its charm, but it's not for those with knee problems, or very small children, or pets who either can't or won't climb stairs with open risers.Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway.
