Manuel Antonio is Irresistable - Pura Vida!
Staying in Apartment La Vista has been a great pleasure. This has been the only vacation I can remember when getting to sleep early was no effort in anticipation of waking at 5:30 a.m. to bright sunshine, sparkling surf and the bird sounds in the trees. What a fabulous location you have! We've had visits from monkeys, toucans, mot-mots, and a daiy stopover for one particular Tananger (very bright red wings). We did not start out as birding people but evolved over several days. The property manager/concierge was fantastic and helped us make the most out of our stay by picking the best tours and restaurants. The Apartment was very clean and well maintained and the Staff friendly and helpful. We highly recommend Apartment La Vista and hope to return again soon.

The View Was Incredible!
We wanted to thank you for the use of your cozy apartment while we were touring the Manuel Antonio area. The view from the apartment was awesome and much more beautiful than we expected. Pictures do not do it justice. My husband and I were very comfortable and the property manager, Ron, checked on us daily and reserved some exciting tours for us. However, just sitting and relaxing on the balcony being entertained by the resident Sloth and occasional monkeys passing by, was delightful. I highly recommend this little gem to couples looking for a picturesque setting surrounded by natural jungle and wildlife. We plan to return again soon!

Wow! What a great time we had in Costa Rica and our stay at the Villa La Vista apartment in Manuel Antonio was wonderful. Our accommodations were perfect - a comfortable bed, great eat in kitchen with all the amenities - fabulous views. We woke up in the morning and sat up in bed to gaze out at the ocean - what could be better! As we enjoyed our morning coffee we watched numerous birds - toucans, fly catchers, hummingbirds in the trees and bushes right outside our door. We saw many lizards and iguanas and watched monkeys jumping through the canopy of trees below. One night we even saw a kinkajou jump on the balcony roof and into the trees - what a cute creature. We enjoyed local food, fun and friends. It was a great time and we can't wait to go back! Thank you Steve and Nancy for a fabulous time.

Greatest View in Manuel Antonio!!!
Greatest View in Manuel Antonio!!!
My wife and I stayed for two weeks in the smallest of the two units, downstairs. Wonderful View of the ocean, great to listen to the surf , watch the surf as it breaks off the Islands off shore... see the sky at night, clear, great view of Scorpio!! Unit had a great Kitchen, all we needed to avoid spending too much money eating out.. Got to tour the upstairs unit, would be great for two couples, completely seperate bedrooms and bath, same wonderfull view, and very spacious... Short hike to the beach, about 10 minutes. Little Steep, but good for excercise each morning... Nancy ( Owner) and her cousins were there, we became good friends, hope to see them next year If they aren't there, The manager, Ron, will take care of all your needs...

My friend and I found the apt perfect for the two of us. However, it can hold 3 comfortably too. The large walk-in closet was great because we could hang all our clothes up and not have to live out of our suitcases. The closet is large enough to hold a baby's crib or a cot making the apt good for 4 people. The large glass enclosed shower has the shower head high enough for tall people, something you don't usually find in hotels. The listing was quite accurate and the apt very clean with ample supply of sheets & towels. The kitchen was well equipped and we were not lacking for anything. As the listing says, coffee on the balcony/deck in the morning watching the sunrise, seeing all the birds flying, the monkeys playing and the waves gently rolling in down below us on the shore was so delightful that you felt like you were in heaven. As an 80 year old, I did find the road to the beach challenging but by being careful and going slowly, I made it down. Once at the beach, the sand was white and clean and the water warm with gentle waves. You could even float in the water on a raft or tube. You didn't need an umbrella. To get out of the sun you could sit under the trees and let the monkeys and other animals entertain you. As for food, if you like seafood and fish, you will be delighted with most of the restaurants. Of course you can always get the Tico staple of arroz con pollo (chicken in rice). I loved eating out because most of the restaurants are outdoors where you can watch the sunset. We didn't spend much time in the apt because we were always going or doing something in Quepos or the surrounding areas. Shopping in the village was nice too as the locals were very patient with our attempt to speak Spanish. They were very helpful too. On Saturdays you can shop at the local fresh food market and buy fresh fruits and vegetables, plants and flowers. A trip to Villa Vanilla showed us how vanilla is grown along with pepper, cinnamon and other spices. You can buy them there too. And of course you must not forget the Costa Rican coffee which is some of the finest in the world. We took some home and have shared it with friends & family. Now you ask if I would recommend this apt accommodation to friends & family, you bet I would. It isn't the Ritz but it is comfortable and homey and a place to hang your hat while you are out doing and seeing all the wonders of Costa Rica. I hope I can go again and stay longer next time.

A cozy getaway
A cozy getaway
Having stayed there this past winter (the dry season there) I can say it's a slice of heaven. The sunrise view is excellent and the afternoon breezes on the porch are great. It's situated in a jungle really so in addition to the sunrise you have exotic flowers, lizards, monkeys, sloths and birds. The apartment is small but perfect for singles and couples but can sleep more (I wouldn't suggest it for more than 3). It is far from fancy but it is clean and cozy. My biggest complaint would be that the shower isn't hot enough for me. The decor is simple but nice. Your focus should be on the view. A small dresser and a large walk in closet. The location is great. A short, but steep, walk to the beach, bus station, cafe and a bank. The road from the house to the beach is unpaved and steep but not long (having been to Costa Rica before I can say this is pretty standard, even for 5 star hotels, but the country is constantly developing and changing). You can drive a car down and park on the beach if you like. Or perhaps catch a ride on a horse from a local guide. The beach is excellent. It's never crowded, it's lined with shady palm trees and is a good place to surf at high tide and shallow waters at low tide. But beware the rip current. Do not swim beyond the breakers. Local officials are doing their best to warn people. It's a pristine beach. I love every inch of it. You can also walk about 20 min down the beach to Manuel Antonio or several restaurants. Crime is bad in Costa Rica but the apartment has great security. It's hidden away from snoopers and has bars on all windows and doors. The walkway is well lit also. The kitchen is small but efficient. Why bother cooking when there are great affordable places to eat nearby? While you can walk to many of the local restaurants/bars the hills are steep and the road shoulders are narrow. I would suggest renting a car or scooter for excursions. You can always take a cheap taxi or bus to Manuel Antonio park. At the park you can drink, dine and sunbath all day. All in all not a fancy place but a quiet getaway if all you want is to relax and soak in some sun.

What a Wonderful Vacation Spot!
What a Wonderful Vacation Spot!
My friend and I just returned from our trip to Costa Rica. We stayed at Apartment la Vista because of a recommendation we received from some friends who have stayed there in the past. It exceeded our expectations as did Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. What a beautiful country and Apartment la Vista offered us a chance to get up front and personal with all kinds of wildlife that abound in this area. We loved watching the monkeys as they played in the trees all around the Apartment. In the morning we were visited by Toucans, Mot Mots and it was a daily stopover for one particular Tanger (a bird with very bright red wings). We did not start out as birding people but evolved over several days as we were so intrigued by all the variety of beautiful tropical birds that visited every morning. This was the only vacation I can remember when getting to sleep early was no effort in anticipation of waking at 5:30 a.m. to bright sunshine, sparkling surf, and the Howler Monkeys in the jungle around us (if you have never heard them before, you will be in for a treat!). The property manager was very, very helpful and incredibly attentive (he frequently called to check to see if everything was OK). All of his leads for tour guides, shopping, etc. I would rate an A+. The owner had sent us a long list of FAQ's that were extremely helpful since this was our first visit to Costa Rica. We spoke on the phone several times and she was so knowledgeable of the area we felt very prepared when we arrived. Apartment la Vista offered us very comfortable, clean accommodations with a great view of the Ocean and Manuel Antonio Park. It is in an ideal location -- not far from the beach, bus stop or restaurants but away from the over-crowded tourist areas of Manuel Antonio. We plan to return soon!

Very comfortable and convenient - Good Ocean View and Amazing Wildlife!
Very comfortable and convenient - Good Ocean View and Amazing Wildlife!
My wife and I stayed at Apartment la Vista last November, 2010. We are planning a return trip to escape the cold and snow in Northeast USA. I could not believe the "disappointing" review that was recently posted for this property and cannot believe it is the same place we stayed and loved so much. We found the owner's description of the property (she told us it was small and best suited for 1 to 2 people), pictures and location were very accurate. She told us about the steep hike back up from the beach and we found it tiring (remember it is hot in Costa Rica!) but the great views make it worth the effort. We have visited Costa Rica many times and know that the Manuel Antonio area is very hilly and mountainous and if you want an Ocean View, you must hike up and down hills to the property's location. The Apartment is located in a natural jungle setting with lots of wildlife to view and hear. We saw monkeys (both White Faced and what they call Titi Monkeys) a mother sloth with a baby, toucans, iguanas and some creature with a long snout and tail. It was amazing!! The howler monkeys woke us in the morning with their "howling" but that only added to the adventure for us. The owner sent us a very long list of FAQ's collected from previous guests and we found them extremely helpful and accurate. The owner and property manager (who lives in Costa Rica) were available to us at any time and were very helpful and quickly responded to any questions we had. The property manager booked us on an amazing Canopy Tour where we sailed through the trees and again, saw lots of wildlife. We loved Apartment la Vista and found it to be well maintained, clean and cozy for the two of us. In Costa Rica you spend very little time inside to begin with as the weather, scenery and beach make it impossible (for people like us anyway) to sit inside. We plan to return to Apartment la Vista in March and are counting down the days. If you have any questions about the Apartment or location, I can tell you from experience that the owner will be happy to provide very accurate and honest information in a timely manner. Remember, Costa Rica is still a 3rd World country and it is not like going to Fort Lauderdale, Florida where you will fight for a spot on the beach. It may be flat there but there is no comparison to the beautiful green mountains and uncrowded beaches in Costa Rica. I highly recommend Apartment la Vista to couples who like to stay off the beaten tourist paths.

My husband and I stayed at this property for three nights. There were some serious problems that you would not know from reading the description or seeing the photos. The main problem is the location. It is neither near the beach nor near the bus to the beach or the park. To get to the closest beach you have to hike down a very rough, rocky trail for quite a distance... and then hike back up again. If you want to take the bus to the more popular (better beach) or to Manual Antonio, you have to hike up a rough rocky trail to get to another uphill walk to get to the bus. At night all these rough, rocky roads are unlit, so unless you call a taxi and can describe to the taxi driver in Spanish where you are, you are a prisoner at night. During the day, to get to the bus, the hike is about 15 minutes all uphill, steep and rocky. (My husband and I are in very good shape and we hike a lot, but this was not pleasant hiking. You have to watch out for cars and shuttles careening around sharp curves.) The other thing I would say is that the view is not quite what it sounds like. The trees are overgrown and you have to peer around them to catch a glimpse of the beach. The last thing is that the place is quite small and not so well maintained. It says it sleeps four, but we felt crowed with two. Also, it says washer/dryer which is shared with the larger upstairs unit, but we couldn't get our laundry done. I would not go back. All in all, it worked but it was disappointing.

Owner response: I am very sorry that these guests were disappointed, however, they must not have read all of the information I sent to them and to all of my guests. I clearly state in my description of the Apartment that "I recommend it for singles or couples only" due to it's size; I have many pictures on the web site and also suggest that guests view a YouTube video that shows every room and area of the apartment, inside and out. If there are more than 2 guests, I always ask them to view the video to be sure they will be comfortable as the Apartment is small and the second bed is only a futon (I am very upfront with them about this)! I send all guests FAQ's that describe the walk down and back to the beach. I state that the beach (and bus stop) are 1/2 mile away (I have measured these distances) -- this is completely accurate. I state in the FAQ's that the walk back up from the beach is very steep in case people have physical limitations. Costa Rica is a very hilly, mountainous country and no matter where you are, you must walk up and down some very steep hills and on poorly maintained roads -- this is Costa Rica! The thumbnail picture of the Apartment's view is accurate but the view constantly changes as the flora and fauna continually grows. We are located in an active jungle with flowers and trees all around. We keep them trimmed but cannot remove them as they are highways for the monkeys, homes and food for the sloths, birds and other exotic animals that live in the jungle and visit us frequently. I do not know what these guests were referring to with their statement that the Apartment is not well maintained as they did not give me any details. I have never had anyone complain about the maintenance or the cleanliness. I do tell guests they should ask the housekeeper to wash their clothes because the washer and dryer are located in the Villa; she would be happy to do this. As the description states, the Apartment offers "modest" accommodations for an economical price. This is not a 5 star resort with a full staff on site and I do not advertise or price it as such. I certify that the information displayed, and provided in my FAQ's about this property is honest and accurate. This property is best suited for guests who do not enjoy the sterile atmosphere of a resort and want the opportunity to see and experience the real "natural" Costa Rica and be entertained and amazed by the variety of wildlife this beautiful country offers. About the owner: We are Steve and Nancy Dunlap and live in Cleveland, TN (not far from Chattanooga). We built La Vista in 1998 while we were still both working. Our plan was to enjoy the peaceful beauty of this location when we retired. We have finally made that dream come true as we both retired in 2010.
Why the Owner Chose Manuel Antonio:
My husband and I built Villa/Apartment la Vista in 1998. We discovered Costa Rica while on vacation and before the huge influx of tourists began. We fell in love with the natural beauty of this amazing country and all that it had to offer. Being wildlife and nature lovers, it was truly a paradise for us.
