Traharta House is one of those rare properties where you can actually hear the sound of the sea as you lie in bed. Its 3 bedrooms and the living room each have french doors opening directly onto a private terrace overlooking the sea and the small sheltered beach. The location has to be one of the nicest we have stayed in. You would never get tired of the magnificent view from the verandah. The house itself was spacious, clean and comfortable for our party of 6 and had 3 bathrooms so no queuing. It was great to have use of a washing machine, tumble drier and external washing line. The galley kitchen and large dining area were well equipped and we ate in most evenings. A large wood burning stove added character and a cosy feel to the living area and the huge store of free logs was a bonus. The local agent, Mrs Cleary, was welcoming and provided us with useful information. Highlights and lows for us were: Lows:- * access lane in need of repair (apparently damaged during recent heavy rain) * No shopping facilities or pubs/restaurants within easy walking distance Highs:- * chilling on the patio * lovely coastal walks directly from the house * kayaking to Castletownshend Harbour and to the beach over on Horse Island * fishing just below the house * our trips to Lough Hyne, Barley Cove and Mizen Head * finding the short cut over the hill to Skibbereen * discovering Fields Bakery We would certainly recommend Traharta House to others and will definitely consider returning in the future Rating 5 out of 5Did you find this review helpful? Traharta House was the highpoint of our trip! The landscape is as beautiful as any I have ever seen. My first impression was that it has a Mediterranean feel, but with a quiet group of cows grazing just nearby it has an Irish feel, too. Unique and sweet, and well-situated for walking/exploring a special corner of Ireland, I recommend trying it off-season. Our family of two parents and two college aged sons chose Traharta as part of our lodging as we walked and otherwise explored the Southwest of Ireland. The house is quite interestingly designed, with each of the three bedrooms possessing double doors opening onto a stone deck that overlooks the ocean. Inside, the house is well-equipped but not fussy or fancy. It feels (rightly) like a beach house and has a lived-in atmosphere that we liked. There was wood ready for fires in the stove, as the temperature does drop quickly in the evening in October. The roof of the house doubles as a rooftop deck. One evening we brought chairs up by flashlight and sat together under a sky full of stars as we listened to the water lapping twenty feet away. To our delight we all saw the biggest and brightest shooting star any of us has ever seen. The owner has been a pleasure to communicate with. The local agents who will have the key and otherwise be available to help were a real slice of lovely Irish goodness whom I would have loved spending more time with. We certainly do hope to cross the (Atlantic) pond again soon and spend an extended time at this hidden treasure.Owner response: We are very fortunate to have a holiday house in such a beautiful sheltered location that is possible to enjoy in all Seasons. Our local agents, the Cleary`s are gems and get great reviews from all our guests. Do come and see for yourself. Graham Shenton

My husband and I stayed in the cottage for 2 nights in mid June. It was a pleasant surprise to pull up the driveway and see a postcard view from the car. The location was so wonderful, we changed our day plans of exploring the area via car and spent the whole day on the patio watching boats come and go and taking periodic walks along the rocky beach. The house has everything you need (3 working hairdryers!!!) and then some. The kitchen had a collection of dry goods from previous visitors which made cooking that much easier. We felt completely at home. The only downfall is that the closest grocery store is about 15min away via car and with us being a little nervous about driving on the opposite side of the narrow country roads, we made the trip for food & laundry soap once. It worked out since our stay was so short. There are lots of cute small towns near by (several within 15-30min via car), but nothing really within walking distance. After spending 2 weeks traveling, this was the perfect end to our vacation. Hopefully we'll be able to return for a bit longer stay!Recommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Dear Elizabeth, Many thanks for your great review. We were pleased to hear that Traharta worked it magic on you and that you had a relaxing time; also that you found the house had everything you needed. Over the years we have found it difficult to describe the location to someone who has never seen it, but hopefully reviews like yours will help share its very special quality. Kind regards Graham Shenton

We spent a week in early March at this house and throughly loved the experience. Having now re-read the positive comments mentioned in past reviews, we recognise them to be accurate. It is a wonderful location and a spacious comfortable and clean house with great ocean views. The house owner and local manager were both friendly and easy to deal with. It is a relatively remote property, which suited us however the nearest village was not too far, and the locals we did encounter were welcoming and a delight to meet. There is much to see and do in the area and we were lucky to have dry conditions which enabled invigorating activity such as pleasant walks to view other spectacular sites and exploring the beach at low tide. However if the weather had been different we would almost have been pleased to be stuck indoors as there was TV, video, internet and a pleasing array of reading material available. In high season when water activities are more readily available the location would then be extremely hard to beat. The adjoining rental option, the small cottage, also looked inviting and perfect for two people, but we enjoyed the extra space of the house particularly as we had a couple of friends from London join us for two nights. We take pleasure in recommending this property.Recommended for: Girls getaway, pet owners, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, families with teenagers.

We stayed in this property for a month and I would return in a heartbeat. The house itself is lovely with a great master bedroom overlooking the water. The design of the house is lateral, so that the main bedroom is way down a long hall from the living area. The property is literally right on the water's edge. You can hear the water lapping as you go to sleep. Or you can sit outside on the very good quality lawn furniture on the deck, or nearby rocks on a small cove, and watch the ocean. The area is filled with great natural beauty - the walking is wonderful, and it is extemely peaceful. The locals are friendly and wave at you as you are walking. Yet, you are just a few miles away from Castletownsend, home to MaryAnne's - one of the best foodie pubs in County Cork. And you are not far from the happening places like Baltimore, Skibbereen, etc. The caretaker is extremely nice as are the owners. If you want to chill, tour the countryside, or you want to experience some of the area's pub life, this place is terrificRecommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We have been visiting this property every year for over 10 years now. We have two boys, now 11 and 13 that have grown up holidaying here. We keep coming back because it is such a special place. The views from the deck are extraordinary and on good days we pass hours in the sun sipping wine and enjoying company of friends. The beach immediately infrontof the house is mostly pebbles with a bit of sand at low tide, ideal for swimming, kayaking, sailing, setting off on fishing trips and exploring rockpools. Just around the headland is a beautiful white sandy beach that rarely has anyone on but us. A little further afield we also enjoy a number of fantastic restaurants with very high quality food. The house itself is a delight. All three bedrooms open straight onto the deck with bathrooms at the back of the property for each bedroom. The kitchen is small but very well equiped and the main room, with large wood burning stove to keep it warm, is perfect for eating together and chatting in the evening. The house is geared up for active people with wetsuits and kayaks etc. with plenty of space to dry out and store kit. We always travel with friends who usually stay in the cottage, we love it so much most of our friends have stayed with us at some point. We could not recommend this place more highly, when there it feels like the best kept secret in Europe.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, pet owners, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, families with teenagers.
