Overlook, a spacious, airy house of glass and wood, sits high on the butte of Gros Ventre West, surveying ponds, grassy ranch land and the lofty span of the Tetons and the Snake River Range. Groves of rustling aspens encircle the house and its wrap-around deck.
Overlook is long and open, and every room is attentive to the stunning views outside. The house fills up with light by day; stars crowd the windows at night. A glass-walled kitchen opens to the dining area and great room, where smooth leather couches face a wood-burning, river rock fireplace. Painted wood walls and rough-sawn flooring, peaked ceilings with exposed beams all add to Overlook’s rustic, joyful atmosphere.
The king-size master suite, also on the main floor, has a tall river rock fireplace, and terraces on both sides of the room. In the wonderful master bath, windows surround the big jetted tub on all three sides, while skylights illuminate the space from overhead. The master bath has its own sauna, which opens to the terrace, trees and cool mountain air.
An open, sunny staircase leads from the Great Room to the downstairs living area, where a wood stove, television and comfortable seating area make a welcome refuge for relaxation. Three guest bedrooms are on the lower level as well -- two with queen beds and one with two twin beds. These three bedrooms share two baths. Doors from the bedrooms open to the terrace, which runs along the entire lower level, and to the soft green lawn and hammock. Moose, elk and deer graze on the hillside among the shady aspens, just past Overlook’s deck.
Overlook -- a simple, welcoming house, of manageable size, in a truly remarkable setting -- is quiet and secluded yet close to everything. It sits halfway between Jackson and Wilson, and is only 20 minutes from Grand Teton National Park.
