Location: Maalaea, Central Maui, Maui, Hawaii, USA (8 miles South of Kahului Airport (OGG)) View Map

Accommodations:  Condo, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths (Sleeps 4-6)

Keywords:  Condominium, beachfront, sandy beach, oceanfront

Quiet, romantic, tropical Kana'i A Nalu, at the north end of Ma'alaea Bay in South Maui, provides a unique setting for your Hawaiian vacation. Our privately owned two bedroom two bath beachfront "home away from home" is a corner unit on the second floor of a 4 story building at water's edge. Our private lanai, 30 feet from the ocean, looks across white sand beach and ocean to neighboring Islands and 10,000 foot Haleakala. It provides the perfect winter viewing spot to watch, up close and personal, the mother hump back whales train their young for their long trip back to the Northern Pacific

Enjoy all the benefits of a corner unit on the second floor: the added security of not being at ground level, the privacy of having bedroom windows looking out on the beautiful courtyard, pool and ocean instead of sidewalk and parking lot and the absence of foot traffic past your private lanai.

The master bedroom has a comfortable king-size bed with a private bath and wall to wall windows with full view of beach, courtyard and pool. The second bedroom, with a view of the pool, courtyard and ocean, has twin beds that can be made up as a king. A second bathroom is across a small alcove. A queen-size sleeper couch in the living room can accommodate up to 2 additional guests. The tropical furnishing throughout and the well stocked full kitchen and generous supply of beach gear will make your vacation one of easy comfort. Our private lanai gives us much pleasure - reading, eating, whale watching or just plain rexaxing to the sound of the gentle surf. Our Green Sea Turtles are seen 10 to 15 feet offshore and the reef just off our beach delights the snorklers. The beach in front of our condo continues to the north end of Kihei as part of the Kealia Nature Preserve: this translates to no development, no traffic and no problems - just 4 miles of empty white sand beach.

A five to ten minute walk from our condo presents a wide variety of activities: snorkel and sunset cruises from the marina, a world class aquarium, miniature golf park and bumper boats, a small shopping area and many different restaurants. The eating choices range from the #1 rated restaurant on the Island through several other excellent, less pricey eateries to Carl's Jr and a Deli/convenience store.

We provide the best of both worlds on Maui. If you are running away from work, snow and cold, or responsibilities in general, our laid back remnant of "Old Maui" will have you relaxed in no time. If you want activity and want to see the Island, you are 15 minutes from the airport, 20 minutes from the North Shore, Lahaina, Kihei and Wailea, and 5 miles or less from 4 golf courses. When you are overwhelmed with all the activities available on the Island, trade the traffic and heavily populated tourist areas for the quiet serenity of Ma'alaea; dig your toes into the white sand beach in front of your own private lanai and unwind to the sound of the surf and the tradewinds blowing thru palm fronds.

We Welcome You to Our Paradise Found!

Paradise Found Beachfront Condo

Year Purchased: 1998

Why the Owner Chose Maalaea

It was love at first sight. We had stayed for several years up in Kaanapali back in the early '70s and found it too crowded, too congested - even then. Now it was 1998 and we were giving Maui another try, staying up the street, before the beach starts. We walked through the grounds at Kana'i A Nalu and we were hooked. Still feel the same 12 years later.

The Unique Benefits at this Condo

Relaxed Island living with a great view of the islands, beach and ocean. Love watching the whales come back every year - they are in so close we can watch the mothers teaching the babies. Enjoy the friendships developed over the years with the other owneres and the many renters that return year after year.

Owner's Map of Maalaea

We are Don, a retired airline pilot, who grew up in Chicago and Arizona: and Colleen, a retired interior designer, from Alberta and British Columbia, Canada.

This is the 2nd time we stayed at Don and Colleen's condo. This latest time was 8/5/07 through 8/21/07. They have a very nice condo, great for a family. I love the location and that is an end unit. Master looks over the beach and pool, 2nd looks over the pool. No issues with not wanting to leave a window open in the 2nd bedroom since a lot of the time the second bedrooms face a walkway. Lanai looks directly onto the beach (35 ft). No A/C, but it is not needed with the tradewinds that come through the valley and through Maalaea. Nice central location 20-25 minutes to Lahina, 10 minutes to central Kihei, 10 minutes to Kahalui. Like not being in the middle of a "city", sugarcane field behind complex. A little market within walking distance up the street for the emergency milk or small needs. I like the tile floor throughout the unit, so much easier to see that it is clean than carpet. We usually had breakfast at the condo, 75 / 25 on dinner, using the BBQ's out by the pool is very nice setting (they have gas a charcoal). Had no problems with anything, a non issue which is how it is supposed to work.

Can't beat the location

This place has everything you would want, along with a great owner. Don went above and beyond what was expected in meeting our needs. One could not ask for better assistance from the owner and those who take care of the unit. If you want to explore the island, you cannot find a better deal. This location is far away from the crowds, but only a short drive from anything that you would need. The condo has everything that you would need and the view is beautiful, we were lulled to sleep every night with the waves. You will not be disappointed if you are to choose this condo.

perfect accommodations for our family's needs. Travelled with grandparent and two children (5 & 2). The location and condo were perfect. Quiet, friendly location and being on the second floor was perfect. The screen door at the front locked as well which allowed us to keep the main door open for the island breeze while making sure our children were secured inside. The grounds were immaculate and the pool was also cleaned. Amazing! will be back to this location and condo!

Will always stay at the Kanai A Nalu!!

Guest: Whale watcher (Tacoma, WA)
Date of Stay: 02/22/11 Review Submitted: 04/22/11

My family has been staying at these condos since the 70's. The location is ideal, the beach and view of the bay is awesome! We've stayed in several different condos. This is the first time in this one. The negatives...there was lots of clutter in the closets and under the sink from stuff left by others. There was little room in the closet in the second room due to ice chests, beach chairs, assorted plastic bags of stuff, old shoes etc. The slider screen door was broken. It needed to be kept closed due to the little flies, but it was a challenge to open and close. One of the rollers was broken. I would have fixed it if I could. Although we rarely watched TV, it was no bigger then a computer monitor, with very poor sound, stored in an over sized entertainment center. The cleaning crew was given a short time to clean, as the previous renters left a day later then planned. It was clean enough, but needed a thorough cleaning throughout. The kitchen was well equipped but there too were leftover things from others, that cluttered the cupboards. There were little ants in the kitchen and bathroom. The positives...the beds were very comfortable in both rooms. Being a corner, ocean front unit was perfect! The view is spectacular! You are literally feet from the beach. The grounds are well kept, the pool is clean and there are plenty of lawn chairs. It was whale season and they put on quite a show. The beach is great. There were plenty of bath and beach towels and linens. All of these negative things are fixable and I'm sure will be taken care of. I highly recommend the Kanai to families or couples. We will always stay there!

Owner response:We appreciate the reviews - the five stars tell us we are doing things right and the three star reviews tell us we need to take notice. The beggest problem here was that we let the previous renters stay an extra day and the condo needed much more cleaning than our crew is used to. I know they worked very hard but couldn't finish all they really would have done if they had the time. As a result we learned that we must follow stays of over three weeks with a full day and a half before the next renter. We hope that this will improve this situation.

Our Private Retreat

Guest: Take me to Maui (Seattle Washington)
Date of Stay: 02/20/10 Review Submitted: 04/01/10

My friends and I (4 women in our 50's) loved our stay in Don and Colleen's Ma'Alaea Bay condo. The building is ideally situated at the end of a dead end road - very quiet, no traffic. And yet just a short drive to Kihei or north to the airport. And the condo is ideally situated within the building as well - we loved that it is an end unit, we couldn't see or hear any of the other units, just had our wonderful view out to the water. The pictures on the website are exactly what the condo and the view look like - no surprises. The beach in front of the condo feels like your own private beach - very few people, even though we had perfect weather for every day of our stay during the high season. If you're looking for peace and relaxation, this is the place to be. Beds were very comfortable. We also loved having the DVR; the Olympics were on TV during our stay so that was a real bonus. Don and Colleen were responsive to our needs, they live nearby and we liked that. Favorite nearby activity is the Maui Ocean Center, just a 10 minute stroll down the street; we enjoyed the restaurants and shops there as well. Okay, so now I'm going to stop praising this condo because I want it to be available for me next time! :-)

We stayed Feb 2010 in this beautiful condo. It is so much quieter than Kaanapali as there are just a few Condos and most only 4 stories, not 30 storiest. We were RIGHT ON the beach and could hear the waves each evening thru the master bedroom window. It is SO CENTRALLY located that we could go to almost every place on the Island in just 15 minutes time. The Whale foundation, Aquarium and small shopping area, and dining within walking distance were also excellent. We had a truly wonderful time enjoying the Condo and the Island. We are former Oahu residents, so are very aware of how crowded many places and Resorts are. Be sure and go walk the Grounds at the Grand Wailea and at least part of the Hana Road experience. We had people who got car sick but enjoyed just a few miles of the Hana road. We flew around in a small aircraft (pilot with us) and looks like the Helicopter flights (Air Maui) would be wonderful to do another trip.
