Enjoying the city view at Navy Pier 07/06/2009

              VRBO Bear stayed here:

Just off Lake Shore Drive on East Cedar Street, this Bear discovered a sophisticated city den in the heart of Chicago. I was impressed when we stepped inside this 1 bedroom, 1 bath brownstone historical landmark national treasure. The interior featured warm gold colors and rich red walls that combined classical 19th century décor with modern day touches. Why settle for a hotel mini bar fridge when you can have stainless steel kitchen appliances and custom cabinetry? The living room was well-lit by big, beautiful bay windows and provided ample seating with two club chairs and a leather convertible sofa you could sink into after a long day of sightseeing. We watched a movie on the luxury HD flat screen TV in true comfort.

The brownstone’s location offers variety no matter what brings you to the city. Bring your suit and visit Oak Street Beach, only a block away. Comfortable shoes will take you along a pedestrian walkway to Navy Pier, a local tourist attraction, where you will find shops, rides and fun for all ages. Dining nearby is plentiful, from elegant to casual (for Chicago-style deep dish pizza, check out Gino's East Pizzeria). We dined in with family and our bear friends a few times during our visit and we were “beary” glad that Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods were a short distance away for picking up ingredients for brunch.

Extravagant shopping is found only two blocks away along the legendary Magnificent Mile. Shop till you drop but not before enjoying chocolate at Ghirardelli's (try the World Famous Hot Fudge Sundae!). A variety of museums and theaters attract those fond of the arts (the Harry Potter Exhibition is fascinating). City streets host historical churches and parks galore. And if you’re feeling romantic, you can take a horse-drawn carriage for a ride through the city’s moonlit leafy-treed avenues.

To accommodate our bear family and friends, we were able to experience two bedroom apartments #2 (Listing #179390) and #3 (Listing #177026) in this brownstone, each with its own originality and flair. If you’re staying in the city for pleasure or business, look no further than this charming brownstone a few blocks away from the Lake Michigan shoreline and all of Chicago’s best attractions.

This was our second stay at this Chicago brownstone and it was all that we remembered. The unit is located on the second floor and overlooks a classic, quiet, neighborhood street. The owners are great to work with and communicate well. The unit is fully equipped with all the amenities, clean, and well-maintained. While it was too cool to enjoy the lake shore, it is an easy walk to the beach/park. Both times we have stayed at this unit, we have not rented a car and were able to get around on foot and via the transit system with no problems. There are a large variety of restaurants nearby and the grocery store is just a couple of blocks away should you choose to prepare meals. The proximity to the Magnificent Mile is a huge plus and we spent more time out of the unit than in - soaking up all Chicago has to offer!

Owner response: Thank you for yoru review! We are so glad you were able to enjoy both the city and the apartment during your stay. We look forward to hosting you for a third time soon! Best regards, FCC Team

We had a wonderful time in Chicago. The location of the brownstone was perfect- we walked everywhere and were able to jump on the L close by. I don't have any criticism- thanks for making it such an easy process. Thanks! Susan

We rented this property for 10/27/12 and arrived at a filthy, unkempt mess of an apartment. 18 (EIGHTEEN) calls later to the owner yielded ZERO results. We left and returned to the apartment at least 6 times during the night to see if by chance it would be cleaned, and it NEVER was....with not a single phone call. More than 28 hours later, we received a call asking US to check if the unit had been cleaned. We fortunately lived in a suburb of Chicago and were able to return home. To THIS DAY, a refund has STILL not been processed for the lack of accomodations, nor has any type of reasonable response been supplied by the owners or caretaker of this apartment. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.....a terrible disaster, inconvenience and nightmare of an experience with this listing. These are the type of people that give VRBO a bad name.

Location of condo couldn't be better for enjoying Chicago. Red line is approx 6 blocks walking distance, and runs 24/7. Located 3~4 stops south to downtown, 4 stops north to Wrigley Field, and 2 stops north to Apollo Theater and Kingston Mines Blues Club. About an hour ride from O'Hare to the condo. Local neighborhood has lots of various dining, and plenty of shopping within walking distance. Beach was busy on Sundays but nice for walking or sight seeing strolls otherwise. $8.00 cab ride to Navy Pier. Condo was clean, and pretty much exactly as per the video. Our condo had both the "hide-a-bed" as well as the blow up bed although not required. Although you could sleep six, I would recommend the condo as perfect for two and comfortable for four. Condo and neighborhood felt secure and safe, day or night. Thoroughly enjoyed our vist and will return again.

My wife and I stayed for 3 days in the 2nd floor apartment along with our daughter and her husband. Amazing location - Rush/State street literally 1/2 block west and the beach 1/2 block to the east, and easy to walk both downtown and to Lincoln Park. Could not ask for a better spot. The apartment itself is just as you see online - maybe even better. Just a great stay - if we come to Chicago again we'll definitely be back here.

The brownstone is in such a perfect spot: in its own little village, within walking distance to just about everything, within carrying distance of groceries and good take-away food, and a couple of blocks from the underpass to the lake path for quieter version of Chicago. It's also its own perfect spot. It's big enough to feel spacious, yet has a cozy charm that makes coming "home" and putting the feet up part of the perfect end to a busy day of sightseeing. It's on a quiet street and the windows open to let in just enough of a breeze to not have to work the AC. I would recommend, if possible, taking the top unit. It's an old building and sound travels, especially footsteps. We had a wonderful stay in the E Cedar brownstone. We will stay again, if we return to Chicago, and we will not hesitate to recommend it to friends travelling to the city.

This condo was an excellent choice: the photos are accurate, the space is large, and the furniture seemed brand new. The location is ideal: 1/2 block to the lake and an easy walk to Navy Pier, Lincoln Park and of course, shopping.

Amazing location, close to great restaurants on the famous Rush Street and walking distance to the Mile! Nice decor, luxurious bed, great neighbourhood. Parking is extra unfourtunately if you have a rental car. Would recommend this accommodation! Jenn & Simon Canada

Our first-ever visit to Chicago was made even more memorable by the outstanding accommodations at this lovely, vintage Brownstone. The apartment was impeccably clean and warmly decorated. The kitchen was a bit tight but was fully functional and we managed to cook all of our meals without a hitch. The bedroom was comfortable and very cozy but could have used better reading lights (a common problem if you like to read in bed as we do). The bathroom was a bit small too, but completely fine for the two of us, and very nicely appointed. The apartment was in a very safe and beautiful neighborhood, and was very quiet at night. We were able to walk everywhere we wanted, and/or take the train which was not too far away. We actually took the train to/from O'Hare without a problem. All in all, this apartment was a great find and the owners were highly professional and a pleasure to deal with. We would stay there again without hesitation.

              Year Purchased: 2008

About the owner: Mark and Ashley are a husband and wife team that have one foot planted firmly in Chicago. As a former Chicago resident for 10 years, Ashley has both friends and family in Chicago. We have twins who love to visit Chicago! They both know that Dad's favorite building is the Hancock.

Why the Owner Chose Gold Coast:
There is only one Gold Coast in Chicago and this historical building is in the heart of it. Our endeavor started out with simply wanting a place to stay when we would visit and eventually use in retirement. We love Chicago and all the City has to offer...from great food, to world class shopping, to museums, architecture, sports, beaches...you name it and Chicago has it all.

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
The location cannot be beat. Chicago's epicenter for nightlife is at the end of the block with fabulous restaurants like Gibson's, Tavern On Rush, Morton's, etc. coming together in a perfect triangular parklike setting. If you want to feel like a true Chicago resident in one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Chicago, this is the place. The tree-lined street is a perfect prelude to your arrival at this historical building. Shopping on Michigan Avenue is just a block away as well. It's an AMAZING location!
