Tybee Island, located 18 miles east of Savannah, is a small barrier island with a wide, 3-mile long beach that's backed by sea oat-covered sand dunes and is perfect for sunbathing, shelling, people-watching and playing in the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. The island's south-end pier and pavilion is a splendid venue for strolling above the ocean sipping a beverage, fishing, or listening to the music of the live bands.
Visitors are lured to Tybee for its low-key recreation and relaxation, but there are plenty of family activities. You can climb to the top of the historic Tybee Island Lighthouse (dated 1773) and visit its museum to learn about the history of Georgia's oldest and tallest lighthouse. Fort Pulaski offers guided tours and daily cannon firings. The Marine Science Center has lots of info and exhibits on the local wildlife, including the endangered sea turtles, which nest here in the fall. You can rent bikes and ride along the surf, or take a jaunt out to Fort Pulaski along the new Savannah Riverfront bike path. Kayaks are available to paddle through the marshes.
While Tybee is a resort complete with restaurants, bars with live music, art galleries and beach shops, it's an atmosphere considerably more laid-back than that of glitzier, larger beach towns to the north and south. And foodies know Paula Deen's Uncle Bubba's Seafood Kitchen is only 15 minutes away on Wilmington Island and it's only a 25-minute drive to Paula Deen's famous Lady and Son's Restaurant in Savannah. |
