The Sugar Tree Farms farmhouse was built in the late nineteenth century. The Hollingsworth family owned and farmed its fields in the early to mid-twentieth century. In the late twentieth century the house and about 40 surrounding acres were purchased and extensively renovated by Paul and Cathy Mifsud. The Mifsud's had the house stripped to its beams and foundation. It was then jacked up and a new foundation built. Renovations included new heating, plumbing, air conditioning, new wiring and the addition of a new kitchen and family room. Extra large hot water tanks were installed, allowing long showers. The wide floorboards and banisters are still original, but the floor plan itself changed. A first floor bedroom and bathroom are now featured, and the dining room fireplace, while still in its original location, now has a soapstone hearth.
Two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, were added upstairs, and a gas fireplace installed in the family room. The large kitchen features a dishwasher, U shaped countertop and custom oak cabinetry. Indirect lighting in the kitchen produces a soft, warm glow at night. The house has been professionally decorated throughout with antique dressers, desks, lamps, and artwork.
Please insure your children do not play with or break the antiques. You may store them in a cabinet (provided) if you need to keep little hands from playing with them. You are responsible for breakage!
The house is immediately adjacent to Salt Fork State Park. Park attractions include an 18-hole golf championship golf course, two marinas, hiking, and fishing. Nearby stables offer horseback riding. Also nearby are paint ball courses and hayrides. Directions and phone numbers are available at the house.
While our kitchen is fully equipped with everything you might need to prepare to eat a meal, if you prefer there are many restaurants nearby. In addition to fine dining at the park's lodge, enjoy breakfast with local farmers in Winterset, just a few miles away. The city of Cambridge, about 12 miles away, offers The Forum, The Longbranch, and several restaurant chains. For a place to have a beer and a great hamburger, try The Point. More restaurants and directions are available for you at our house.
In addition to the farmhouse, Sugar Tree Farms has a barn for boarding horses in pasture, and a riding paddock. There are no additional charges for these features, but please let us know if you are bringing a horse. We do not allow smoking in the house and we do not rent to hunters. Guns are prohibited from being discharged on our property. |
