Coconut Hideaway is one of the most charming and unique beach homes on the island. This is our private home -- not a rental unit -- and we have decorated it with antiques, oriental carpets, original artwork and many collections from our travels abroad. Unlike the "condo/townhome" complexes to the south, our beach is rarely crowded.

Our Caribbean-inspired home is built in the "Old Florida" style and boasts soaring high ceilings, gleaming hardwood floors, warm cedar siding, Tiffany-style lamps, a dramatic open staircase and unobstructed views of the beach from every room. We offer two screened porches, front and back, plus open decks surround the house for sunning.

Two comfortable hammocks offer the perfect spot for reading. Al fresco dining is available on the front porch for warm evenings or indoors for breezy evenings. We have a breezy outdoor seating area on the front porch and a cozy conversation area, decorated with antique wicker, on the back porch. Unlike many homes which are merely "gulf view" or require a long walk across the island on hot sand, our home is directly on the beach. We even have a tropical tiki hut nestled among the dunes, perfect for watching sunset with a tropical drink.

Each bedroom offers both a king-size bed and a small daybed perfect for children. We feature 100% cotton linens which are included with your rental as are all kitchen utensils, beach towels, chairs, umbrella and a dock for your boat. Our laptop (MAC) is provided for free wireless Internet access upon request. The kitchen features new granite counter tops, bread maker, blender, microwave, toaster oven, coffee grinder, crock pot and a fully stocked pantry. Two refrigerators offer plenty of space for extra ice, sodas and snacks.

As part of the barrier island chain that includes Sanibel and Captiva Island, Little Gasparilla Island offers the peace and serenity that those overcrowded islands cannot. As a bridge-less barrier island, accessible only by water taxi, Little Gasparilla has fewer tourists, no high rises and no crowds on the beach. You vacation with dolphins and egrets, gopher tortoises and sea turtles.

The fishing is superb from the beach or the dock, and children and adults alike will also enjoy shelling, snorkeling, riding skim boards or simply floating on a raft. Noisy nightlife is non-existent, though you may encounter ghost crabs or giant sea turtles on the beach. There is daily water taxi service to the island, so mainland visits are always possible, though not necessary desirable!

Golf cart rentals are available on the island for exploring, but many choose to walk the sandy pathways that meander up and down the island. There are several golf courses within 10 minutes of the marina, and an excellent fish market (Miss Cindy's) just across Placida Bay. There are charming gift and souvenir shops in the village of Placida and Boca Grande.

Please note that most all houses on Little Gasparilla island are on stilts. Unfortunately, we are not handicap-accessible. We provide baby gates for stairs inside the home but small children will require supervision on the stairs.

  • My family has been all over the United States on many different types of vacations. This was the best family vacation we have ever had. Forget the rat race. Forget the frantic pace of Disney or various other theme parks or cruise lines. Imagine you and your family on an island of your own in a beautiful house. Listen to the waves crash onto the beach just outside your window as you fall asleep. The house is immaculate with everything you could ever imagine to make it a home away from home. It is simply gorgeous with beautiful antiques and artifacts thoughtout the house. There are lots of games and books to enjoy for those rare rainy days. Buddy & Laurie are the ultimate hosts. This is an "outside of the box" vacation. Spend quality time with your precious family. Hunt for shark teeth, dig for little crabs, watch the dolphins play in the waves...get out your flashlights and hunt for ghost crabs at night. We even saw a manatee!! There are 2 sides of the island for your curious little ones. The oceanside and then the bayside. Both very different and full of wonderful treasures. We found a conk shell that was over a foot long!! The best part for parents is that you can allow your children to enjoy themselves while YOU really kick back and enjoy yourself. I really hate to give up the secret of our beautiful get-a-way but others should really try it. You will not leave in the same mood you came! You will be absolutely relaxed and stress free. ps - Listen to Laurie when she tells you to pack lightly!!!

  • This is a beach house like none other. It is modern and comfortable, but has island character and charm that makes the whole beach experience more authentic. And the beach is beautiful and almost like your very own because you are sharing it with a relatively few others. This is the ultimate place to RELAX. I LOVE IT!

  • One of the most relaxing vacations ever. A beautiful, tastefully appointed house (but not so tastefully that my 2 year old couldn't also enjoy himself!) right on the beach, masks and snorkels for snorkeling in the warm, gentle and shallow gulf waters, comfortable beds for everyone, hammocks to enjoy the sunset over the ocean. A perfect vacation for families where they don't have to worry about finding activities for all ages, cramming into a too-small hotel room, driving around, stressed out and trying to figure out which shuttle bus goes to parking lot B while starving children scream from the back seat... oh wait, that's the ghost of my OTHER vacations talking :). This house is PERFECT!!! Just show up and enjoy lots of family time- at the beach, on the spacious porch overlooking the ocean, eating your own groceries rather than paying a fortune for restaurant food that your kids are going to throw on the ground or say the Mac N Cheese (which IS KRAFT BRAND ACCORDING TO THE MENU) tastes funny. And the owners really have thought of EVERYTHING- not a single thing (towels, sunblock, etc.) is missing. Even if there's something you forgot at home, chances are, it's there. A truly amazing place.

  • We were guests in mid-February at Coconut Hideaway. We enjoyed beautiful sunsets, walks along the beach, and we were warmed in the sun at the Tiki Hut behind the house. Even on cooler days you can sunbathe at the Tikki Hut -protected from wind and warmed on this sundeck!

  • This is my favorite vacation spot! Typically spent with my entire family, I can always find a place to be alone and relax. In the summer, the water is like bath water and is shallow enough for even the nervous of swimmers! Our last visit around Christmastime proved very memorable! We had bonfires on the beach, dug through mountains of beautiful shells each morning, caught a few fish off the dock with our Barbie fishing poles and had many relaxing naps in the hammock! What a wonderful break from the Utah snow! I can't wait to go back!

  • The owners thought of everything to make our stay perfect at Coconut Hideaway. From the beautiful boat ride over to this private (non-commercial) Island, (we knew this was going to be a most special place) to every ammenity they provided, it could not have been more wonderful. The views are magnificent, and can't hardly describe the breath-taking sunsets that became the evening ritual to watch. There are no cars or stores on the Island (Only a small chapel) making this the most special place we could have found. If you want to "get away from it all" and relax...look no further! The vegetation, palm trees and interior decor were just perfect! (Better than you can imagine!) We highly recommend this lovely and unusual home to anyone who is looking for a peaceful and quiet vacation and the ability to walk for several miles on a white sandy beach.

  • Although, I would love to keep this place a secret so I could profit from having the opportunity to go as often as I'd like, this does not help the owners of this ASTONISHING home. This beach house is the ultimate place to stay, we have looked at many places on the Island and throughout Florida and Coconut Hideaway is truly the most comfortable, laid back home you could rent. A true collector with a sense of style has put all the furnishing together, you feel that you are at home in this spacious, beachfront home. Collections of shells, Persian rugs, pottery, funky antiques, etc. It is not even worth to stay elsewhere (or buy a place or your own) as it would takes years to collect all these wonderful objects. The best part is that the house is right on the beach and we enjoyed the sunsets everyday from the comfort of the screened porch. We took advantage of morning and evening walks on the beach that sometimes felt that we had all to ourselves. There is a sense of peacefulness throughout the Island. Truly a best-kept secret that is worth protecting! We will definitely return :) *****FIVE STAR ACCOMODATION*****
