A good place to relax as well as base for mountain activity
A good place to relax as well as base for mountain activity
The two couples in our group vary from 63-87 years so we were looking for somewhere to enjoy the mountains and relax. We found the house as advertised with an exception or two. The photos show a fireplace that is no longer there. I believe the house has been modified since the photos to eliminate the fireplace and add a wood stove in one of the family areas. We found the house and facilities to be quite comfortable. Being older and less altitude tolerant, we did not use the downstairs portion of the house after getting winded climbing the five or so steps to get to the house's front door and first floor. The hot spring fed pool is something that makes this place special. There is a thermostat system that allows the temperature to be set to a more comfortable temperature than the 130 degrees or so it arrives at. Very relaxing to watch the deer or other wildlife, or the stars while in the pool relaxing. The kitchen is equipped with everything you will need to cook meals, which we did. Although you will want to try some of the good restaurants in the area as well. As someone else commented, the house has no air conditioning which means that on warmer days, it can be warm inside. But that quickly cools down as the sun goes behind the mountains - and there are fans in the house. In late august, we saw upper 70's in the day, and one night it got into the upper 40's. No snow. At 8200 feet or so in altitude, if you are coming from a low altitude and not used to it, you will want to acclimate slowly. Three of the four in our party felt the effects of altitude. We learned that you can purchase small containers of oxygen at the medical supply in Salida if you choose. Larger containers require a prescription. Our older member purchased the small can and it made his first day or so better. We enjoyed the shopping in Salida and Buena Vista as well as our field trips to Colorado springs and the nearby ghost town of St. Elmo. If you are adventuresome there are river runners, motorcycle adventures, and every mountain activity imaginable to be had from vendors nearby. Or if you want to veg out and read a book this is also the place for that. We found the direct TV cable service nice, and the WIFI very fast. We found the owner rep Linda quite helpful and quick to respond to our email questions and comments before and during our stay. The people of this area are friendly and make you feel at home during your stay. We would recommend this rental and would return.

Best Vacation We've Had in Years!
Best Vacation We've Had in Years!
As airline employees, we fly for free and get discounts everywhere we go. There are few places that we have not been. As experienced travellers, we have stayed in all sorts of places - from upscale accomodations in Hawaii to private family homes in third world countries. We have learned to appreciate all types of vacation experiences. After everywhere we have stayed, we think of The Alpine Hotsprings Hideaway as one of the most enjoyable, and would return here again and again. It is situated on a beautiful, QUIET lot with much to offer travellers who want a peaceful, and almost silent vacation. The house is roomy and easily accomodates a family's needs. The private geothermal hot spring pool is sooo relaxing with a view that is to die for! We loved soaking in the soothing hot water, while looking at the moon, listening to owls in the trees, and watching deer stroll by. The kitchen is well stocked, the family room is large, but cozy with a big screen TV. The property itself is not exactly upscale, but it is roomy, comfortable, clean, and offers all we need to feel completely at home here. Our only complaint was that we found the house VERY warm. With the thermostat turned WAY down and all the windows open, we were so hot that we wished we had brought shorts and t-shirts. Of course, we also needed winter gear, BUT summer wear would have been nice for the house. We were able to lay out on the front deck and sunbathe in the middle of January. Even though the area is experiencing a warmer than average winter, the temps still ranged between 25F-45F. However, with the house's southwest orientation, and front deck facing the sun, we were shielded from the northern breeze and were felt quite toasty between noon and 3 PM each day. This was a pleasant and unusual experience in the winter of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The only day that was too cold to bask in the sun was a cloudy day, but as long as the sun was out, we were able to enjoy sunbathing. We took advantage of the area's winter attractions, which include: St. Elmo Ghost Town, snowshoeing at higher altitudes, hiking to a beautiful waterfall, horseback riding, and shopping in nearby Salida. Other activities include skiing at Monarch Mountain, and swimming at Mt Princeton resort (walking distance from the Hideaway). Summer guests can also fish or raft on the Arkansas river. Most of all, we really liked hanging out at the peaceful house, taking in the view and enjoying the quiet.
