Best Vacation We've Had in Years!

As airline employees, we fly for free and get discounts everywhere we go. There are few places that we have not been. As experienced travellers, we have stayed in all sorts of places - from upscale accomodations in Hawaii to private family homes in third world countries. We have learned to appreciate all types of vacation experiences. After everywhere we have stayed, we think of The Alpine Hotsprings Hideaway as one of the most enjoyable, and would return here again and again. It is situated on a beautiful, QUIET lot with much to offer travellers who want a peaceful, and almost silent vacation. The house is roomy and easily accomodates a family's needs. The private geothermal hot spring pool is sooo relaxing with a view that is to die for! We loved soaking in the soothing hot water, while looking at the moon, listening to owls in the trees, and watching deer stroll by. The kitchen is well stocked, the family room is large, but cozy with a big screen TV. The property itself is not exactly upscale, but it is roomy, comfortable, clean, and offers all we need to feel completely at home here. Our only complaint was that we found the house VERY warm. With the thermostat turned WAY down and all the windows open, we were so hot that we wished we had brought shorts and t-shirts. Of course, we also needed winter gear, BUT summer wear would have been nice for the house. We were able to lay out on the front deck and sunbathe in the middle of January. Even though the area is experiencing a warmer than average winter, the temps still ranged between 25F-45F. However, with the house's southwest orientation, and front deck facing the sun, we were shielded from the northern breeze and were felt quite toasty between noon and 3 PM each day. This was a pleasant and unusual experience in the winter of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The only day that was too cold to bask in the sun was a cloudy day, but as long as the sun was out, we were able to enjoy sunbathing. We took advantage of the area's winter attractions, which include: St. Elmo Ghost Town, snowshoeing at higher altitudes, hiking to a beautiful waterfall, horseback riding, and shopping in nearby Salida. Other activities include skiing at Monarch Mountain, and swimming at Mt Princeton resort (walking distance from the Hideaway). Summer guests can also fish or raft on the Arkansas river. Most of all, we really liked hanging out at the peaceful house, taking in the view and enjoying the quiet.
Recommended for:Romantic getaway, sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, families with teenagers.
