Takes three to four or more days to enjoy the most active volcano in the world; the lava has continued to flow for 25 years with no end in sight. Latest blog from USGS: Since March 2008 within the Halema`uma`u crater, a vent exploded into view and after six more explosions as of September 2008 has doubled in size (to 215 feet). It is now spewing forth a heavy stream of vog. Helicopter pictures reveal a roiling, bubbling lava surface approximately 100 yards beneath the rim of the vent within Halema`uma`u. This is the first clear view of lava within the vent. Continuous spattering was casting globs of lava across the lake surface. A park ranger commented that all this activity often portends a bubbling forth of new lava. Could this happen at your visit, would you dare to miss it.
It is a very easy drive to the Jade House, on Jade Avenue, located just off the Highway, that takes you from the Hilo airport to the Volcano Visitors Center. You can easily find it in the dark.
Jade House is located in the center of the East side of the Big Island where it is an easy 30 minute drive South to Punaluu Black Sand Beach with large turtles sunning themselves, year around. The black sand is actually glass beads formed when the hot lava hits the cool ocean and then floats down to form the beach. To the East 30/40 minutes are the large naturally made Lava Tide Pools, just perfect for snorkeling in, with many beautiful fish of every description in relatively Shark free waters. Then enjoy swimming in the Natural Hot Mineral Pond heated by the Volcano. Next view the lava pouring into the ocean at dusk. Then a leisurely drive back to the Jade House which can easily be found in the dark. Then there is the Observatory on Mauna Kea...
