Castaway Cottage is Grand Bahama Island at its best. Away from it all, yet an easy drive from activities and the airport. When you're here, you won't believe you're not on one of the out-islands.
The cottage was built in 2007 as a retreat for bonefishing and relaxation. It's just a half-hour drive into Port Lucaya, a fun, touristy town with straw markets, excursions, restaurants, bars, and a casino. The cottage is located in an exclusive and private setting next to one of the world's most beautiful beaches, Gold Rock Beach, famous for being the setting for scenes in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. As remote as it feels, it's hard to believe that this spot is so easily reached from the U.S.
Once you're here, you can choose the kind of day you want to have: Bonefishing is world-class right in front of the cottage; stroll along the unspoiled beaches that reach for miles in either direction; kayak up Gold Rock Creek; explore the hidden treasures of the Island like the Garden of the Groves or the Lucayan National Park; go out for lunch in Port Lucaya or simply relax with a book in the Palm Grove next to the beach. Explore McLean's Town and have a Bahamian lunch by the water or have a picnic at Pelican Point or Crabbing Cove Beach.
The cottage was completed in 2007 and completely equipped with basic satellite TV, wifi, cooking equipment, and all sheets and linens. The layout is compact; very comfortable yet low-maintenance, with a kitchen, living and dining area elevated to maximize the view of the turquoise blue ocean. Master bedroom with queen bed and bureau. Living room has a pull out sofa. Full bath on this level. The loft has a twin bed, bureau, and lots of storage space. The first level features bunk room with 2 bunk beds, bureau and closet and a full bath. The outside shower offers great ocean views and affords privacy from the rare passersby on the beach (but not others staying in cottage) due to the oleander hedge! Situated on the beach in an area of exclusive homes. It's private, safe and beautiful. You can walk for miles on the beach and see few, if any people. You should see plenty of small rays in the shallow water as you walk. The tropical landscaping features many different kinds of palms as well as plants that attract butterflies and hummingbirds The bird songs are a welcome sound after leaving the cold of the Northeast in the winter! The beach is loaded with shore birds. Expect to see pelicans and ospreys daily. We would be happy to recommend local bahamians that can take you fishing (flats, deep sea, reef), snorkeling, or for simply an adventure on the water.

Our spot on Grand Bahama Island has an out-island feeling without the white knuckle, puddle-jumper approach! Big jets fly into Freeport (FPO) and getting to the island is simple. As soon as you drive out of Freeport, you start to experience the Bahamian atmosphere. Most of the way you will drive through a Bahamian pineyard.
Castaway Cottage enjoys a beautiful setting on a white sand beach. Stay in glorious seclusion for a week, or ride into town a few times for some fun in Port Lucaya - your choice. Located in a safe area of very nice homes. No junk cars or other undesirables nearby. We are on the beach, not across a public road from the beach. Some listings are deceptive. I would be more than happy to provide an unbiased (or at least as unbiased as I can be) view on our place compared to others. Our goal is to have happy, repeat renters.
Lush landscaping for a truly tropical feel.
Other Activities: kayaking, beach. Golf and tennis 30 minutes.
Year Purchased: 2007
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage: We enjoy gardening at our home in Maine. It has been exciting (and challenging) learning about gardening next to the ocean in the Bahamas. Our goal is to choose plants that are salt and drought resistant yet still create a lush tropical look. We did not want to install irrigation. Another goal is too attract wildlife such as butterflies and hummingbirds.
In the Bahamas, they clear a lot in one day with a bulldozer. Scrape and burn. Before clearing, I identified areas and specific trees that I wanted to save. I wanted the lot to be as natural as possible. I discussed this with the equipment operator and headed into town. When I came back I was devastated-huge sea grape trees had been knocked down and much more of the area cleared than I wanted. Now , 7 years later (2014) things are looking great!
We started with the lower level next to the beach. We planted app 20 pretty large coconut palms. We chose several different varieties for a more interesting appearance. Then we built a natural coral boulder sea wall-much of which is buried in the sand. To anchor the soil at the wall we planted sea grape, coco plum, spider lilies and some young coconut trees.
By the house we planted regular and dwarf oleander, plumbago, christmas palms, dwarf date palms and alexander palm and a specimen bismarck palm near the steps leading upstairs. Currently we have a lemon, a tangerine, a sapodilla, 2 mangos, a papaya and 2 guava trees on the upper level. Recently we have added more coconut palms, washingtonia palms, indigenous sabal and thatch palms, silver button wood, a mahogany tree, texas sage bush, native frangipani and a host of others. Butterflies and hummingbirds are now residents. Birds songs fill the air.
Once in a while a storm will come through and we will prop up the trees that have been knocked over (lemon tree, bismarck palm, and coconut trees by the road have been knocked over twice) and seem none the worst for the experience.
