Tucked neatly into a forest of aspen, alder and old Colorado spruce, Riverwood Lodge seems a house from a fairy tale, the cool air redolent of the spicy woods, streams running through groves of willow. Riverwood was built in the Great Camp style of the National Parks, and the welcome and grandeur of this splendid house begins with its big Dutch doors.
The great room, with French doors opening to the lawns, the mountains and the wide sky, is the heart of Riverwood. A high, arched ceiling soars over a beautiful stacked stone fireplace, antique barn wood floors and an elegant dining area. The Tetons seem to come right in through the windows. Riverwood has an impressive collection of handsome antique paintings, bronzes and pottery, arrayed throughout the house.
A roomy, welcoming office with a stone fireplace and red leather Molesworth chair serves as entry to the Master Suite. The Master suite is grand and comfortable at once, with a king size bed, sitting area, writing desk and doors leading out to the lawns and thickets of river willow. The Master Suite has an ample dressing area and a luxurious bathroom, where the deep tub looks out onto the dense green of the woods.
Two more guest rooms round out the main lodge, each with king-size beds, private baths and French doors to a balcony or terrace. The guest rooms look northward, the pastoral view rimmed with tall green spruce. Outside, in a private spot behind the Lodge, is a hot tub with a long, unimpeded view of the towering Snake River Range. The Lodge is fully wired and technologically up-to-date
Riverwood has a charming, two-bedroom, two bath guest cottage on the property, built of Montana logs. A stone porch wraps around the cottage, furnished with comfortable willow armchairs pulled up to the outdoor fireplace. The cottage has its own Great Room, a stone fireplace at one end, the kitchen at the other. Glass on three sides lets in the music of the splashing creek, as it meanders around the grounds.
Grand Teton National Park and Jackson Hole Mountain resort are just five minutes north of this wonderful property; a small local market lies five minutes south and the vibrant town of Jackson is 15 minutes away. |
