Family vacation. Me and my 3 teenage children traveled to Hawaii for the first time in May 2013. The Coconut Grove Cottage was the perfect price and location for my family. The cottage was centrally located in the town of Kailua and only blocks from one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. The amenities of town were also only a couple of blocks away including a fresh fruit/vegetable/food market, grocery store, Whole Foods Market and much, much more. The Studio has internet/Wii fi, so my son was able to play his video games on his lap top in the desk area while the girls and I went to the beach, hiked the Maunawili Kookaupoko Trail to Maunawili Water Falls and hiked to the peak of Diamond Head Crater! If I had the rental car, the girls could easily walk to the beach on their own. Kailua was only 40 minutes away from Honolulu were we attended a wonder Luau at Paradise Cove. The photos are very accurate of the studio appartment. It was very clean, well maintained and well organized. Unexpected amenities: condiments (mayo, mustard, ketchup), coffee and filters for the coffee maker, plenty of fresh bed linens and blankets, shampoo, conditioner and body wash in the shower, blow dryer, ironing board, beach equipment, bar-b-que pit and I could go on and on. We bought grocerys from the local market, Times, Whole Foods and the outdoor market that opens after 4pm in the bank parking lot. We ate the freshest/sweetest pineapple and papaya I have tasted (instructions on how to cut were on the frig!) We mainly cooked in the appartment but did eat out a few times: Bubba Gump Shrimp and Teddy's Bigger Burgers. Sheila was extremely helpful in answering all my questions and sending us information on things to do in the area.... and we LOVED her recommendations of breakfast at Cinnimon's. The red velvet pancakes are to die for! Thank you Sheila for allowing us to share in your piece of paradise.....I would highly recommended this cozy, economical VRBO rental!Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.
Owner response: Aloha Judy, Thank you for the kind review and sharing some of the things you did while in Kailua. I'm really glad you got to do some of the recommended activities which are all close by. I love the Maunawili falls hike but hope the mosquitoes didn't get the best of you! I agree the red velvet pancakes are to die for, but if you come back, you've got to try the pancakes at Boots n Kimo's with their macadamia nut sauce! After eating at these two great breakfast locations you certainly have to hike, bike or swim to burn off these delicious calories! I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and hope you'll visit again. A hui hou (until we meet again)!

My husband and I stayed at the Coconut Grove Cottage with our young daughter during an extended stop over in Hawaii. The cottage was clean and tidy and only ~5 minutes walk to the beach! Sheila had beach towels and other equipment available for use and it was nice not having to worry about packing that stuff in our already bulging suitcases. Kailua is a great town and this was a wonderful way to relax on our way back to the USA. Thank you Sheila for being a wonderful host!Recommended for: People with disabilities, families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.
Owner response: Aloha Brianna, I am glad you, your husband and daughter enjoyed your stay at our cottage. The cottage is close enough to the beach to walk. I'm also glad you got to use the beach equipment and returned it in good condition so the next guest can enjoy them as well. We try to provide as much as possible so that our guests can enjoy a wonderful stay in Hawaii without lugging a lot of extra stuff, especially since the airlines charge extra fees for baggage, yikes! Thanks for choosing our cottage. I hope to have you stay with us again in the near future. A hui hou (until we meet again).

My husband and I just visited Hawaii for our anniversary, and we really enjoyed our stay at Coconut Grove Cottage. It was a cute and comfortable space, and centrally located to everything that we wanted to do on the island. Shiela was a great host, and was in contact with us after booking, making sure that we didn't have any questions or concerns. It was a short walk to the beach and close to dining as well. We appreciated the grill in the back and the beach equipment available as well. We had everything we needed and thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Oahu and this rental property. We cant wait to return!Owner response: Hi Aaron, Thank you so much for the kind review. I enjoyed having you as our guest during your anniversary and would welcome you back anytime! We certainly love our central location and know that it is easy for guests to get around even if they choose not to rent a car. I am looking forward to meeting other guests that come to visit our island this summer! Hope to see you back again next year! Mahalo.

Our experience was really just okay. The owner was very accommodating and agreed to let us stay less than the usual 5-day minimum. However, the daily rate she charged us for that exception was considerably higher than the rate that was advertised. The studio itself was very clean and tidy, but we had to wash dishes and silverware from the cabinets before we could use them, as they had been put away still dirty. The bathroom door was a sliding style, but it was not attached at the bottom, allowing the door to swing open from the bottom. There were some other issues that were encountered as well. There were three of us staying there, which she knew when we booked the studio, but only enough bath towels, wash cloths, and beach towels for two. There were no sheets for our grandson's bed, and no blanket for his bed either. We were unhappy when we made these discoveries and were unable to reach the owner, as she was also on vacation and not available by phone. My call to her was not returned until the next day, and was returned by way of a text message rather than a phone call. I understand that she was on vacation as well, but felt that she should have either been available or contracted with someone else to be available in her absence. It surely would have made things more convenient for us as paying tenants. When we returned home, I called the owner to discuss our vrbo review before I posted it. The owner was very customer service oriented and we were somewhat compensated, which ended our telephone conversation on a much better note. Overall, the location was good and the cottage was cozy, but for the price we will stay elsewhere next time.Owner response: Unfortunately, I will no longer be accepting stays under our minimum stay requirement. I graciously accepted this guests request for a 1 night stay which I NEVER do, because she complained that another VRBO owner had abruptly cancelled her reservation and she was stressed out trying to find last minute accommodations. I wanted to help her have a better experience with VRBO, so reluctantly I agreed. We do not have a 1 night fee rate because we don't accept 1 night stays (which by the way are not cost effective for us) but even so, I quoted her a rate and then reduced the rate when she complained it was too high. I also waived the requirement for her to email all signed documents since she did not have access to a computer and notified her that this was an exceptional request since I do not accept 1 night stays and I was away on vacation. I then waited for several hours for her return phone call. I also told her our housekeeping company does property management so they would be available in my absence. Unfortunately, due to the last minute nature of this request, and since the housekeeper was rushed when the guest arrived early before the 4PM check-in time, our housekeeper inadvertently left only 2 bath and 2 beach towels in the unit. I apologize for the missing towels however, our housekeeper was immediately notified of the error and dropped off extra towels that night. One week later I received a call from this guest complaining vehemently. I was totally shocked at how rude this guest was to me on the phone and eventually had to hang up on her because she would not stop yelling, and assaulting my character even though I did my best to calmly make things "right". I refunded her cleaning fee and warn other landlords and property managers to listen to their instincts and do not waive your rules otherwise you will regret it. This is not my typical customer (thank goodness) and reminds me not to make exceptions to our rules as no good deed goes unpunished! I assure future guests that you will find our unit clean and tidy with enough bath and beach towels for (4) people. I am confident in our housekeeping company and the quality of customer service both they and I provide. Should you choose our home, I know you will be pleased too!

What you see is exactly what you get. A great location. Close to shopping and the beach. We stayed for a month so we rented bikes for our stay and had a blast riding around the area and checking out the sights. Sheila was a great host and very attentive to our needs. I would highly recommend this rental.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, tourists without a car.
Owner response: Aloha Jennifer, Thank you for the kind review. I am glad you & your husband enjoyed your stay! I think it was smart to forgo the car rental and rent bikes. You get a better sense of the town. Our area is perfect for riding bikes since everything is close by including restaurants, shopping, and of course the beach! I would love to have you back again! Mahalo.

My daughter and I wanted something simple, yet affordable. This was perfect for us. The listing/ photos were accurate and the property was clean. The large bed was very comfy and the sofa bed worked well for my daughter. Only the sliding door on the bathroom needs oil! Having access to beach chairs was appreciated. The location is outstanding. Whole Foods is just a few blocks away so we were able to use the kitchenette for meals. We walked to the local beach at Kailua. However, we also spent time at Lanikai beach, especially if it was windy. Lanikai is gorgeous. Other activities: 1. Sea kayaking with Twogood Kayaks - highly recommended, our trip highlight 2.Polynesian Cultural Centre - scenic drive along coast 3.Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail - scenic 20 min. walk with great views, best early morning 4. Hoomaluhia Botanical Gardens - nearby and off the tourst radar 5. Manawili Trail - nice local hike suggested by owner, trail will be slippery if wet We certainly hope to return. Mahalo!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

We stayed at the Coconut Grove Cottage in late Nov. The cottage was very clean and classy. One of us slept on the bed and one of us slept on the futon--both of which were very comfortable. The property owner was attentive and quick to help when we needed it. The property is very well maintained, and located just blocks away from downtown Kailua. LOVED the town! If/when we return, I wouldn't hesitate to stay at the cottage again! Mahalo!Recommended for: People with disabilities, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.
Owner response: Aloha Phyllis, I'm glad you and your granddaughter enjoyed your stay. I hope your thanksgiving with your family was great. Thanks also for your patience in waiting for me to bring by the extra sheets. I apologize again for the inconvenience because normally the extra sheets are stored in the white closet but unfortunately they were forgotten this time. I'm glad we got to meet and chat. Mahalo!

We have just spent a wonderful time in Kailua. The Coconut Grove Cottage is an excellent place to stay when visiting Oahu. It is very close to very nice beaches, where you will be able to relax much better than in Waikiki. But still you can get anywhere you want really quickly. The cottage itself is very nicely decorated and well equipped. Sheila is an excellent host who will help you out with anything you need. We can strongly recommend this place to anyone!Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.
Owner response: Aloha Aiko, Thank you so much for the kind comments! It was a pleasure meeting you and I'm glad you enjoyed staying at our cottage. I look forward to your staying with us again! Return guest get an automatic 10% discount. Mahalo!

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: My husband and I grew up in New Jersey but we love the beach! We fell in love with Hawaii after we came here on our honeymoon and several years later made the move! Once here, we found ourselves looking for pet friendly beaches to go to with our dog Gigi and soon we were driving over the Pali Hwy every weekend to Kailua & Lanikai Beach. The soft, white, sand, the calm, shallow, crystal clear water, and the windy breezes all added up to the perfect stretch of beach to relax and sunbathe on. We also loved that we could walk up and down the beach with our dog and even let her off leash at Kalama Beach Park. There was no question; we had to have our own Hawaiian cottage in Kailua! I hope you enjoy our proximity to the beach and Kailua town. We sure do. If at all possible, drive around Oahu and check out a beach on each shore. I recommend Ala Moana Beach on the South shore, Haunama Bay for snorkeling, Pipeline for surfing on the North Shore, Koolina on the West Shore, and Sandy Beach on the East Shore. Then take a day trip to Maui, Lanikai or Big Island as they are spectacular too and each has a different 'feel' to it.
Why the Owner Chose Kailua:
We chose Kailua because it is quieter and less 'touristy' than Waikiki. It makes for a great staycation get away when it is not rented even though we just live on the other side of the island. Plus, both Kailua & Lanikai beaches are listed in the Top 100 Best Beaches. On top of that the Bay we love snorkeling and Kailua Beach has a protected reef, perfect for snorkeling and other water adventures. When I found this home for sale and it was only two blocks from our favorite beach, I knew this was the one.
The Unique Benefits at this Studio:
The best thing about our cottage is that we can enjoy modern luxury in our newly renovated home and are only a short walk to a pet friendly beach. We can relax at a more private local beach but you can also walk to Kailua Beach Park and enjoy all it has to offer. It is the best windsurfing spot, with shady spots which make it easy for relaxing. There is also easy access to renting kayaks, snorkel gear, boogie boards and bicycles.
If you're lucky, while swimming, you may be greeted by a Green Sea Turtle. A short paddle ride leads to Popoi'a 'Flat Island' a protected bird sanctuary.
We also are glad to be close to town since we enjoy dining out at places such as Teddy's Bigger Burgers, Lanakai Juice, Mexico Lindo, Assagio, and Bubba's Restaurant.
