VERY SPECIAL LOCATION! WE OFFER SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN MISSING IN ITALY: a luxurious vacation home with terraces and POOL INSIDE the encircling walls of an historic village WITH PANORAMIC VIEWS! Not your average farmhouse miles from town, or a small village apartment with a tiny balcony. Just steps to main piazza for your morning cappucino or gelato or fine dining experience! We have a huge 970 square meters beautifully restored 13th century glass works built in the medieval walls of Piegaro, Umbria. In the middle of everything you want to see: on the border of Tuscany, near Cortona, Lago Trasimeno, Panicale and Perugia. A car is recommended to tour all the sights!
Beautiful terraces and travertine pool with panoramic views to countryside filled with vineyards, olive groves, and farms. Beautiful sunsets! Night swimming with fully lit pool! Complete privacy, yet just steps to the village piazza with all amenities of village life!
The Villa has five bedrooms with five baths ensuite/walk-in showers and hand crafted armadios, panorammic views; one bedroom is in the top of the 9th century tower. Two story soaring ceiling with chandeliers in the living and dining area with panoramic view. Comfortable couches and hand crafted dining table with 11th century benches to seat 14. Beautiful antique furniture pieces and antique folio prints on walls. Upstairs library with balcony overlooking the living/dining area has leather couches, fireplace, piano, TV with DVD, large bookcases filled with fiction, art history, travel guides. Library table for your laptops. WiFi!
Huge gourmet kitchen with antique fireplace, extra large fridge, cooking island, double sink, dishwasher, American and European coffee makers, blender, toaster, fully equipped kitchen.
We have lovingly and beautifully restored this huge ancient glass works, L'Antica Vetreria, into a large villa and four apartments on three levels of the ancient walls with complete privacy for each unit. It is very rare to find such a property within a medieval village with terraces and a pool and private road from the village piazza.
A rare gem, our luxury vacation property had its beginnings in the 9th century. It was once the first glass works built into the 9th century walls and defensive tower by master artisans who came to Umbria from Venice around 1292. We have faithfully restored all its unique features including the ancient glass ovens, tower spiral stairway, and many arches, stone niches and ancient kitchen fireplaces.
Available year round with central heating and heated terra cotta tiles, the villa and each of the apartments have their own unique historic features. See owner's website for photos and more details.
Our romantic village is in the middle of everything! On the border of Tuscany and a few km from the Auto Strada, you can easily take day trips to see most of the hill towns of Tuscany and all of Umbria. You can be in Cortona of "Under the Tuscan Sun" fame in forty minutes. Florence is an hour away and Rome in under two hours. Dine on fresh fish from Lago Trasimeno. See all the sights and return home to a glass of fabulous Umbrian wine and take a swim in the pool!
Living within a medieval village is experiencing Italian life at its best; what we call "la dolce vita". Just steps from our villa and apartments, one can savor a morning cappuccino or have an afternoon gelato while lazing in the sun in the piazza or around our swimming pool with panoramic view. There is no need to drive for miles to a restaurant or shops, for all you need is within its walls. Stroll the medieval cobblestone streets to the news agent, the gelateria, two cafes for snacks and espresso or cappuccino, florist, bakery, butcher, wine shop or the two grocers to plan your evening meal. Book an Umbrian chef to cook a feast or give you a cooking lesson. Or dine at a gourmet restaurant in the small piazza beside our villa with special menu and discounts for our guests.
At every turn and twist in the little stone streets one glimpses ancient doorways, a palazzo, a well and stairways leading to 13th century apartments with the daily washing swaying in the breeze. Savor the quiet of a nature walk in the serene Parco Rocolo just under L'Antica Vetreria and discover a mountain of blue and green glass shards from 750 years of glass making.
The history of our surrounding countryside is romantic and enchanting. St. Francis once strolled through our village on his way to found one of his first convents in nearby Cibottola where he lived for awhile. Hannibal defeated the Romans near our Lago Transimeno.
Exclusive wine tour and tasting at local "green" vineyard; world famous as the only "carbon neutral" vineyard in the world! Special discounts for our guests. Fabulous wines and also olive oil!

"We had such a lovely time, and I cannot tell you how much it meant to us to be able to have such a wonderful vacation together. You all made us feel so welcome; you made us feel a part of the family. We came home and GUSHED over every aspect of our trip. Your kindness and hospitality surpassed any expectation I had, and future guests need to know what a wonderful experience they are going to have."

"I wish I could say that I am happy to be home after my wonderful trip in Italy, but I just can’t. My family and I had such an amazing time. We simply can’t wait to return. Our trip was better than we could have ever hoped. Pure paradise. Piegaro is a friendly and inviting town and the Villa was just spectacular. We could not believe the transformation you were able to perform. The villa was completely cozy and “rustic” at the same time. In our three weeks, we toured so many places and experienced most of your suggested day trips. We have already received many requests for information about the place that we stayed from our friends! John's Facebook picture is one of him and all of the boys on the couch in the Villa. I also have to tell you how wonderful Carlotta and her family were to us during our stay. They were always available and willing to help us whenever we felt unsure about anything. My oldest son, Jack, told me that he had a “crush” on Carlotta on our last day. I think he wanted to stay with her! Actually, no one wanted to leave and I am hoping to plan our return trip to Piegaro soon. Thank you again for discovering Piegaro and sharing it with us." We are already booking for three weeks in 2011!

We stayed at L’antica Vetria for one week from May 15th to 22nd.Colleen the owner was an excellent host, full of information about the area and very helpful. The little town that they are located (Piegaro) in is very nice and the people there are very friendly, tho may not speak much English so bring along a phrase book! Within a 1 minute walk is the little café (open good hours) a bank with ATM, a butcher, grocery story, glass museum restaurant. Within a 3 minute walk is a little store that sells everything you may have forgotten (tutti por la casa) And the local bakery post office are maybe a 10 minute walk at best. There is another store in that direction too about 5 minute walk at most just past the main parking where the Wednesday market is. We stayed in the AWESOME 5 bedroom Villa. Let me tell you that the Villa is spacious. It has 5 bedrooms each with their own full bathroom, it has a full kitchen, livingroom and fireplace and huge table on the mainfloor, along with 2 bedrooms. On one side you go up stairs to see 2 more bedrooms. On the other side you go half way up the stairs to a bedroom in the tower (with its own fireplace), and then at the top of the stairs you have another living room with TV and fireplace. There is a pool outside and each unit has their area with chairs and BBQ. As the weather was cooler than usual Colleen was able to order us some wood for the fireplace and we had a fire in the upstairs part of the villa 4 nights in a row to warm up after busy days of sight seeing. This place would be perfect for 3 to 5 couples easily. Colleen gave us a tour of the whole facility and all the rooms look awesome and would be great to stay in. This is a wonderful place to stay and a great location for visiting Tuscany and Umbria, We will definitely return here someday soon I hope!

Your hospitality made our 40th anniversary trip a true gift! We loved the villa and vowed we would come back some day. We have sent many other friends to your web site and have told them of the beauty and warmth of the people and Piegaro.

A friend and I were travelling throughout Europe this summer and our last week was booked at L'antica Vetreria in Piegaro. We fell in love with L'Antica and the lovely, quiet village. It was the perfect place to spend our last week relaxing and enjoying this beautiful area of Umbria and Tuscany. The owner, Colleen, gave us tours to nearby villages and places of interest that we would never have gone on our own. We also visited some of the more well known tourist towns but the charm was in the places not well known to the tourists. Her knowledge of the area, the culture, people and history made our stay very special. Our room was completely furnished so we shopped at the local stores and cooked several meals in but also favored the local eating establishments that had fantastic food. You must try the Pizza Colleen at Osteria Juni's...I'm sure I'll never have one as good until I can return there. We had a beautiful view from our room of the and valley below and the village square is just a few steps from the entrance. Colleen gave pasta making classes one day to guests which was great fun and the glass factory offered etching classes and we each brought home a treasured piece.. I can't wait to go back. It's not just a place to stay, but Colleen has endeared herself to the local people and because of that, they make you feel welcome and embrace you as part of the village. A great stay, don't miss it.

We'd love to see more of Italy, but we keep getting pulled back to the beauty and relaxation of this amazing place! With a dreamy view out the window, the villa is located in a perfect village, with plenty of opportunities to explore beautiful towns like Cortona, Lago Trasimeno, Perugia, Chuisi, Montepulciano and Panicale. However, when you need a mellow day the villa and Piegaro are perfect for just hanging out, playing music, dipping in the pool, and cooking up a big family meal. We stayed here with a large family group and were all comfortable and are absolutely amazed at the history of l'Antica Veteria. Collen and Tom are true visionaries and have created a wonderful oasis for creating beautiful family memories.
Owner response:We are blessed to have had this family stay with us at L'Antica Vetreria on many occasions. We are so happy that they want to return and return to this historic village which is so welcoming. Some of our favorite memories are of the boys feeling the freedom of a safe and welcoming village, and nights spend together making music and eating fine food! Come back soon Suz!

It's been a year since we've been there, but the sense memories are so vivid...it feels like a week. Colleen and Tom have created a retreat that's elegant and serene. Twenty times a day we'd witness something so simple and beautiful that we'd stop what we were doing and stare: The view of the valley, the clouds, the town, the birds, the 1000 year old interiors. This is the kind of place that when you're telling your friends about it, you'll say: "Go. Trust us. Just go. Stay as long as you can."
Owner response:We loved having Richard and his lovely wife, Pam, with us! We spent delightful hours together in a truly beautiful setting. We definitely agree with his review of our village, our property and the good life to be had in Umbria!
