It is time to think about SUMMER - and we have just what your need to have a quiet, rejuvenating, retreat from the hubbub of daily life. Whatever you decide to do, our home is a beautiful place to kick back and relax in the peace and tranquility of the North Woods.
Access to Lake Independence is just down the road. Lake Independence is known for its Perch, Walleye, and Northern Pike. Lake Superior is 3 miles away. Or you may opt to take advantage of the tranquility of McKenzie Bay. Our home sits on this small motor-free lake and offers great bird watching and abundant wildlife. If you time your visit right, you may be able to see the beauty of the moon shining across McKenzie Bay.
We are on County Road 550 just minutes away from the historical village of Big Bay. This former lumber town is known for having produced the wooden panels for Henry Ford's Woody cars and for producing Brunswick bowling pins. There are abundant opportunities for fishing, hiking, waterfalls, biking, swimming, water skiing, snowmobiling, cross county skiing, all within the picturesque area of Big Bay.
This is a vacation spot for all seasons for anyone wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of daily living. The serenity and seclusion we offer is a great opportunity to spend time with those you love as you enjoy the beauty of watching the moon rise over the water, geese and ducks flying in and out, or witness an eagle or osprey catching their dinner. Song birds fill the mornings and evenings with their lilts.
Our family home offers the amenities of a home and is filled with memories of our parents and special family times. The walls tell the story of the love between our dad and mother and eight children.
Come sit by the outdoor firepit and enjoy the many splendors that nature has to offer and enjoy the shimmering beauty of the moonlight on McKenzie Bay. Or curl up by the indoor fireplace and enjoy the comfort of watching the flames.

Everything about this vacation was wonderful. Immediately you felt right at home in this lovely well kept retreat. We loved the amount of space outside, we could walk the dogs around the property and they were fully satisfied. The fall colors were beautiful, we hit it just right...at peak! One of my favorite things to do during a fall get-a-way is to drive the back country roads to see the sites and wildlife. There was no lack of back country roads here! Would go back to this retreat in a minute!!!!Recommended for: Pet owners, adventure seekers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

Recently my husband, daughter, and I spent a week at this lovely home nestled in among tall trees, flowers and a nice little lake to view the birds and the summer sun rising. It was just beautiful. I am so pleased this family has gone to all the work to keep this home place up and share it with all us trolls!! Honestly it is just so relaxing and restful. The kitchen is fully equipped. We stopped at Walmart in Marquette before we arrived. We were pleased to find at the house all basic items….salt, pepper, pots, pans, loads of teas, some coffee in the freezer and of course the wine bottle cork screw (and it was exactly where the description says!!) Big Bay is a little out of the way, about a 20 or 30 minutes’ drive from Marquette. It is worth the drive. There is a lot to see in Big Bay. We saw water falls, Lake Superior, Independence Lake, Grams Breakfast place (that may not be the name, but it’s some good eating!). Everyone was so friendly and helpful. There is a whole house ceiling fan to bring in all the cool U.P./Lake Superior air ~ Several ceiling fans and box fans for more personal use. I will say one thing about the house that could be problematic. If you are looking for a good air-conditioned place, this one is not it. There is an air conditioner and it works, but it does not cool the whole first floor, so the back bedroom can get warm. We actually only needed the air-conditioned one night. I think this summer has been hotter than usual so under normal circumstances you will not need air-conditioning…we were very comfortable there. (Air conditioner obstructs view of lake in the room it is installed) HOWEVER, Excellent views from the screened in porch, sitting room, dining room, kitchen, deck and even the basement! In fact, the basement has a big window and you can see the lake. It is very nice and comfortable in the basement, with a full bathroom. We chose this house because of its setting and were not disappointed! I know you will be happy if you choose to rent this lovely home for your next vacation to the U.P. We would rent this house again.Recommended for: Pet owners, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

We spent 10 days at this property. The quiet lake, lush greenery, abundant wildlife surrounding the house are a wonder to behold and a respite for the soul. The house itself is spacious, well taken care of, and has all amenities we hoped it would have. The owners took care of us and were genuinely concerned that our stay would be all that we needed it to be. All our questions were answered and requests fulfilled from where are best places to visit to keeping the bird feeders filled, so that we could have humming birds, golden finches, and red-bellied woodpeckers as our regular neighbors. Nearby is the Lake Superior Harbor with a quiet sandy beach for swimming. In any direction there are trails in the woods and waterfalls. The 30 minute drive to Marquette offered a variety of restaurants and shopping opportunities as well as picturesque Presque Isle with its dramatic views of Lake Superior. The tavern and restaurant in Big Bay offer tasty food at very moderate prices each with their own unique atmosphere. I can definitely recommend the homemade desserts (cobblers and pies) at the Thunder Bay Inn! I have already recommended this property to two of my closest friends. This is the fourth vacation we have booked through VRBO and HomeAway. Each one has been a success!Recommended for: Pet owners, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, people with disabilities.

Had a great stay, our only regret was that it was to short. The cabin is located on a beautiful piece of land, where we enjoyed watching the Sand Hill Cranes, and Blue Heron. The accomodations were very comfortable and very well maintained. We would definately come back again. The owners left information about areas to visit, unfortunately we did not have time to explore, but hopefully next time we can check out the area. If you are searching for a place to unwind, enjoy nature, and a total get away, I would highly recommend this vacation spot.Recommended for: Pet owners, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1972
About the owner: Our parents first came to this area deer hunting in 1937. From then on it was a love affair that captured their hearts and finally moving here permanently in 1972. For the 8 of us children it was a vacation paradise and has become home for 7 of us. Our parents taught us many strong family values and maintaining their home for others to share has become a priority since their deaths in 2005. You get a real taste of local history and the dedication to family and life that they shared.
Why the Owner Chose Big Bay:
If you enjoy watching birds out your window, deer grazing by the water, eagles flying over the water in search of dinner, watching the beaver swim, and the sound of a Sand Hill Crane, you will love our location. The rolling lawn is adjacent to the woods and gives a sense of privacy. This is truly a home to relax and enjoy your vacation, away from the busyness of the city, yet close enough to enjoy the highlights of Marquette and natural beauty of Big Bay.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
There is plenty of room and all the amenities of home. Lake Independence is only a mile away and offers clean, cool water for water sports, swimming and great fishing. McKenzie Bay offers quiet water, with no motorized boats and fun catching perch or pike.
