We were looking for a quiet get away from New York City that wouldn't require a day of travel to get there and a day of travel on the return. We didn't imagine that after only a two-hour drive (we were blessed with almost no traffic), we'd find the beautiful place we discovered when we arrived. Everywhere we went we encountered friendly faces and folks who were delighted to offer assistance when we needed it. The best part of each day was returning to the peace of the cabin for a quiet meal, curling up with a book, or just watching the sun set through the slim tall trees from the front porch. We are looking forward to our next stay.

Liz,

We had such a nice time at the cabin. Steve and I decided it was the perfect cabin (so comfortable, great kitchen, the wonderful loft!) We really had a hard time leaving the cabin to DO anything, didn’t even go out to dinner in the end. But that was just fine, since we DO all the time.

Best,

Pam

Liz,

We have told all our friends here in Philly about your lovely cabin, and there is general interest in returning for a late winter getaway. Thanks again for the hospitality.

We arrived late Friday night and lit the fireplace. There was about 6 inches of snow on the ground outside. My fiancé and I actually slept up in the loft just to get the best views of the morning light reflecting off the trees and snow. Saturday, we cooked a nice breakfast and waited for the third couple to arrive. Once they did, we hiked up the road to the Appalachian Trail, got a little lost, got found, saw the spring, got cold, came home, and started the epic night of board games. Yes, we walked up and found the swing. The view from up there is very nice!

All the best to you and yours,

Sutter

Hi Liz,

What a great weekend we had. The cabin was perfect for home cooked meals and fellowship by the fire. Both mornings were leisurely, catching up on novels, before heading to the temple on the first morning and a short hike on the second. Saturday afternoon we hit 4 wineries where we bought a few bottles each as a memory of our time. You should consider putting the Berk's county wine trail on the cabin's "to do" list.

Thanks again, for the use of the cabin,

Doug

Dear Mr. and Mrs. T.,

I think at one point during the weekend (maybe Friday night) my two oldest children had every single lego and action figure spread out across the entire loft. My daughter had the castle set up and was playing house, and my son had an elaborate attack scheme to bring chaos to the domestic, peaceful castle. Too much Narnia, I guess. Sunday morning, they knew their job was to put every toy back before they could even come down. Our two younger daughters were absolutely thrilled to play with the giant stuffed snakes the older kids brought down for them from the loft; and “slide” on their bellies down the little hill in the floor.

All of my daughters and wife are hot tea drinkers, and enjoyed a cup of the orange tea each morning.

My wife is quite torn—she wants to come back in the winter and summer! Thanks again, and I’m sure you will hear from us again someday.

Matt

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1998

My husband and I have been married for 27 years. Our sons grew up spending weekends and vacations at the cottage. A few years ago, we did an extensive renovation. The house had been built in the early 1950's and was in serious need of an up-date. We gutted it and rebuilt it from the inside out. When we renovated it, we used the best materials and implemented excellent design. Our first guests came in June of 2008. Since then, it has been our pleasure to provide dozens of families, couples, groups of friends, and individuals with an opportunity to experience the joy that we have known through this wonderful place.

Why the Owner Chose Bethel

For the first 16 years of our marriage, we looked for a private retreat where we could "get away from it all". Proximity to the Appalachian Trail was a priority. We needed a place that was isolated. We did not want to be able to see other houses. We wanted a place that was not in a development..was not on a road, was not surrounded by houses with lawns and hot-tubs and pools. We wanted to have a retreat that was part of nature, not a place that violated nature. In 1998, after looking at countless houses, in countless locations, we found this home. We had never seen anything even remotely like it. We had to have it. We put in our bid: full asking price, no inspections, no contingencies. We knew that this was where we belonged.

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin

Peace. No worries. I don't know why, but it is virtually impossible to worry when you are on this property. For some strange reason, your worries melt away as soon as you enter the drive that leads to the cottage. However, if you are looking for family fun and adventure, it is right around the corner. For the first ten years of owning the cottage, we were very content to explore the woods, hike the Appalachian Trail, sit on the porch, and read. In 2008, when we first started renting the house, I decided to research activities that would be interesting to our guests. My "things to do" guide is 9 pages long! All of the activities are under an hour drive--most within 15 minutes.
