Peaceful Cabin in the woods

Guest: Caitlin C.
Date of Stay: 04/06/12 Review Submitted: 05/09/12

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at this beautifully designed cabin in the woods. It was so good to sit at the kitchen table and look out at the expanse of trees or walk down to the babbling brook and let my daughter splash around. The cabin met and exceded our expectations. It is the happy marriage of coziness with all modern conveniences:wifi, cable tv, washer dryer, etc The cabin is beautifully kept and lovingly designed with great attention to detail. We were greeted with the makings for smores and the wood was set up in the fireplace for a fire. It was the ultimate sign of welcome and care. We had three small children with us-so we visited Dutch Wonderland (about an hours drive) and the kids got a huge kick out of the place. There were no lines on the day we visited. Overall, I think this is an ideal place to relax and enjoy your family or friends!

Cozy spot in a relaxing location

Guest: Gordon C. (Huntingtown, Maryland)
Date of Stay: 04/01/12 Review Submitted: 04/07/12

Our family of 5 chose this location because of proximity to the Appalachian Trail and because of the consistently awesome reviews. From the start, Liz did everything she could to make this an enjoyable experience - even allowed our dog, Pumpkin, to stay. This was spring break for our three children (17, 15 & 12) and was more relaxing than we could have imagined. Of course we had some teen outbursts but overall it was just what we needed - especially with our eldest leaving for college soon. We made a fire every night and split our wood into 2"x2" slats for easy burning. Roasted a few marshmallows each night (thanks Liz)! We also managed to avoid watching any TV until the 4th night - but then only to keep up with Survivor. We hiked on the Appalachian trail, the Ken Lowe trail and drove into te town of Lititz for Wilbur Chocolates and to eat at the Tomatoe Pie Cafe. For my wife it was most relaxing as she was able to idly sit back and read in front of the fire or sit on the porch and enjoy the relative silence of nature. The cottage is clean, well stocked and very quiet. Thank you for the peace and quiet!

Date of Stay: 03/16/12 Review Submitted: 03/19/12

This being out second visit to this quaint little cabin, I had been counting the days until our arrival. And of course Ken & Liz didn't disappoint! This was actually a surprise weekend for my wife who had been having a busy few weeks at work and needed a relaxing getaway. I also invited another couple to join us for our first night - and it was so nice to kick back in front of the fire an chat. The morning coffee on the front porch couldn't have been more perfect. I am already trying to figure out when we can make out next trip! Long live Liz & Ken! :-)

Amazing Getaway

Guest: Andrew S.
Date of Stay: 02/10/12 Review Submitted: 02/14/12

My husband and I spent an amazing weekend at this cabin getaway. From the moment we walked in the door and saw the makings for s'mores on the table, we knew that this place was special. Every detail was wonderful -- dry firewood on the front porch, well stocked kitchen, much attention to "comforts" of home. It is nice to know that an oasis is a short drive from home. We were able to take part in the Berks County Wine Trail Wine & Chocolate weekend as well. We enjoyed a somewhat snowy weekend, cannot wait to come back and enjoy the other seasons. Thank you Liz and Ken for all you have done to make this a great retreat. We have been spreading your praises to all who will listen. Cindy & Andrew

Perfect Stay

Guest: leanne b. (jersey city)
Date of Stay: 01/27/12 Review Submitted: 02/01/12

Spent this past weekend at the super cozy AT Cabin! 'Cabin' is an understatement, its really a modern, well appointed home. It beautiful, clean, and super comfortable. We spent almost the entire weekend inside near the fire and around the kitchen table, exactly the seclusion and relaxation we were looking for. There are plenty of opportunities for peaceful walks in any direction when you leave the house. Owners are super friendly and very helpful with questions, everything has directions and works great. I would recommend staying here to almost anyone, the loft might be tricky for some folks, as its accessed from a ladder and has a low ceiling, but its really just extra space, the main floor of the cabin is plenty. Loved it and will go back!!

A group of friends (3 couples) stayed at the cabin for New Year's this past year and it was an AMAZING time!! The cabin is the perfect size and a great balance of comfort and rustic charm. Liz and Ken are gracious and attentive, even leaving smores in the kitchen and and cold beer mugs in the freezer for us upon arrival! We can't wait to come back in different seasons.. Great place to relax, recharge, reconnect...

Holiday week at the cabin

Guest: Sue S.
Date of Stay: 12/20/11 Review Submitted: 01/11/12

We loved the cabin. The minute we walked in the front door and saw the stonewall fireplace and the ladder to the loft we fell in love. It is obvious to us why we see so many repeat families coming back to this cabin. It is clean and obviously loved. The cabin is full of many extras; such as teas, coffee, reading glasses, suntan lotion and a variety of children's toys. We even found day-glow orange caps and vest for safe hiking during hunting season. It was quiet and comfortable. The owners have thought of everything right down to providing firewood and all the fixing for smores. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything one could need. My son and granddaughter loved the loft. He played with the dinosaurs and train tracks all week. Several members of our family hiked up around the back and found the secret swing. They had a blast. Though there are plenty of activities to participate in the area. This cabin is a perfect peaceful retreat. We had a lovely relaxing Christmas in its warmth. We'll back. The owners responses prior to and throughout were helpful and immediate. We have already made tentative to return. Our friends have asked where this wonderful place was just so they can stay.

My family of 5 spent a wonderful winter weekend at this cottage to celebrate my husband's birthday. We did a little hiking, a little cooking and a lot of relaxing. It was a wonderful place to "get away from it all" and reconnect as a family. My children spent hours in the loft, and while they needed a bit of help getting up and down the ladder, it was a perfect place to play. We will definitely come again!

We spent our Thanksgiving holiday at this wonderful cottage. It was as described and more. The setting was uncrowded and peaceful. It was just what a bunch of city people needed to regroup from our busy lives. The owners were thoughtful and attentive to our needs. We especially enjoyed the notebooks filled with ideas for viewing the local sites. Our visits to the Appalachian Trail and Yuengling Brewery were highlights for us. The cabin was clean and well-maintained. We would stay here again if the opportunity should present itself.

I was on the search for a cozy cabin half way between Washington DC and New York City and this is it! Had an amazing time staying at Liz and Ken's one of a kind cabin. In the thick of the woods you really feel tucked away and still only a short drive to civilization. I will definitely be staying here again. Hiking, And S'mores are literally waiting....

Perfect Retreat

Guest: Sara J.
Date of Stay: 11/09/11 Review Submitted: 12/03/11

This was a perfect spot for our work retreat. The cabin is cozy, comfortable and well appointed and maintained. It has a wonderful combination of modern convemiences and old fashioned charm. The two bedrooms are spacious, and the loft worked well for two adult men, low celings notwithstanding. With five adults indoors for much of the time, we never felt crowded, and we felt very well taken care of. Our hosts were helpful with every detail, from step-by-step directions to troubleshooting internet connectivity while we were there. They also left fixins for smores, along with firewood and kindling - a really thoughtful touch. It was raining a good bit of the time we were there, so we didn't spend much time outdoors, but the setting is beautiful, in the hills nestled among a stream and woodland trails. I highly recommend the cabin for anyone looking for a peaceful retreat not too far from the city.

Great time! Very cozy and relaxing. Just what my wife and I needed. Beautiful place. Very clean and comfortable We were there two days and didn't venture out much. We had the fire going and had intimate dinners right there. The porch was fun to sit out on and listen to the stream down below. We hope to be back next year. Liz and Ken were wonderful hosts. Anything we needed was just a phone call away. We would recommend this cabin every one of our friends. Enjoy!

Date of Stay: 09/03/11 Review Submitted: 10/18/11

We arrived Saturday morning to find much more than a "cabin" in the woods. "WOW" were the first words out of our mouths. My 5 year old daughter immediately went up to the "loft" and was enthralled. Everything is so clean and well kept. The smores and skewers were even out and ready for the fireplace. Liz was so helpful before we got there and even while we were there. She told us where the "cool" places were to go and visit. We even had internet to search for things in the area. Although, Liz is full of info on the area and can tell what's the best for your family. We left Saturday afternoon to go the PA Energy Fest. I'm no tree hugger but the carnival atmosphere was awesome for my family (just as Liz predicted). We came back to the cottage after dinner and stoked a good fire for smores (and to keep us warm). Even though the heat system is fantastic, there's nothing like a roaring fire keep you warm! On Sunday we woke up to the smouldering ashes and threw on some more logs. This got us through breakfast. When the fire died down, we went to see the old fashioned train ride and Crystal Cave (both were Liz's recommendations). They are both about 20 minutes away and an easy country drive. Both were outstanding suggestions for my family. She also has multiple booklets of attractions which most of them were hand written (showing her dedication to guest services) Going out to these places is nice but the next time we go, we are going to stay right there on the property and explore the nature and enjoy the cottage more. Everything you can possibly need is inside (or outside even). And, Liz is the most gracious and sweet host. There is plenty of room for even a large family with all the amenities that make you feel at home (despite being the only house for as far as the eye can see). I would recommend this place to anyone who wants an amazing peaceful weekend.

We stayed for a week this August. We have 4 children ages 9,7,5 and 4. They absolutely LOVED the loft area of the cabin. We used the cabin as our base and made day trips to Gettysburg, Philadelphia, Lancaster, Valley Forget and more. Liz was very helpful. My boys were interested in the Underground Railroad and she even left a DVD for us to watch on the underground railroad in Chester County! The cabin is wonderfully stocked and the full size washer and dryer are a god send when travelling with children! The place was spotless. While the cabin is remote, it is a nice central location. We were able to do day trips with no issues. We even went hiking at Hawks Mountain which Liz had suggested. I don't have anything but good things to say about this place.

Back to our Hideaway

Guest: Kristine P.
Date of Stay: 08/12/11 Review Submitted: 08/16/11

My husband (then-boyfriend) and I visited this beautiful cottage in the Winter of 2009. Back then, we came here for a mini-vacation - just the two of us - and had planned to go hiking a bit but mostly wanted to stay indoors and relax by the fire. We had planned for 3 nights but, unfortunately, on the first night that we were to arrive, I was still reeling from a terrible case of the flu. Liz was so kind and understanding, and told us that we had already booked all 3 nights, so to come if we could, but that she would honor any missed nights if they needed to be rescheduled. We were able to make it for the 2nd and 3rd booked nights of our stay.. and it was one of the most memorable escapes that my husband and I have had with one another. We went hiking and explored the pond. We went to the Yuengling brewery in nearby Pottsville. Of course, we visited Cabelas. But what really made the vacation so wonderful is all the time we spent indoors, by the beautiful fireplace: roasting marshmallows, drinking hot cocoa, playing Scrabble, reading ghost stories to one another, cooking dinner together. We had such a relaxing, romantic weekend, and since then, we have always reminisced on that time, and what a perfect place the "Tankel House" was to recharge, unwind, and just enjoy each other's company. Flash forward to August 2011 and we are back for a whole different experience. This time, with Chris' brother and sister-in-law, their two girls (6 and 8) and my sister. When booking, Liz remembered us and told us that we had one night stay waiting for us! What a memory! It was a full house. I never fully appreciated the wonders of the loft until I saw how the girls instantly fell in love with it. They wanted to stay up there forever. It rained quite a bit during our weekend, but we had a blast regardless. Back to the Yuengling brewery. Hiking and frog-spotting at the pond. Horseback riding. Playing games upstairs in the loft and at the kitchen table. Reading stories quietly to ourselves or aloud to one another. We had a great time with the family. Liz and Ken's cottage is/was perfect for both kinds of vacations: a romantic getaway for two and a bustling kid-friendly family get-together. We will absolutely be back. PS Liz even left my husband and I a beautiful card and gift for our recent marriage. Such a thoughtful couple and gracious hosts. We will never stay anywhere else in the area; You shouldn't either, reader!!!

Loved the Cabin

We loved our stay in this cabin...it was perfect for my husband and myself, my mom, and two 12 year boys. The boys loved playing in the woods, and there was so much to do and see within a few miles of the cabin...the Appalachian Trail, Hawk Mountain, Blue Marsh Lake, and the river. It may take you a few tries to find it-it's THAT remote, but so relaxing. If you want your internet and cable TV, it has that too! It was great to be able to cook and eat there instead of eating out every meal. We recommend it!

Such a great place

Date of Stay: 06/23/11 Review Submitted: 06/27/11

We recently stayed at this cabin for three nights and four days, with three small children. It is clearly a property maintained with much thoughtfulness and love - it is very clean, the beds and furniture are comfortable, the kitchen is well-stocked, there are plenty of towels, books, games, wood for the fire, etc. It DOES NOT feel as if the owners have stocked it with the stuff they don't care about, which can so often be the case with rentals. We spent lots of time perusing the owner's extensive list of local things to do, while mostly sitting on the front porch and relaxing! We did manage to go on some good hikes behind the cabin and on the very accessible Appalachian Trail, my kids played in the creek that runs in front of the cabin, and we discovered tons of wildlife nearby. There is an outstanding loft full of toys for kids that we could hardly drag the children out of. For families with small children, it is useful to note that the woods behind the house are very rocky and uphill - great for adults and our 6 year old managed it, but it was too difficult for our 3 year old. I called the owners with a question during our stay and they responded promptly and with great detail. They were very lovely and easy to deal with. We've stayed in a number of rental properties, and this is not a typical one. Overall, it hits a wonderful line somewhere between a hotel and the home of a friend. I can't recommend it highly enough - we'll certainly be back!

My sister and I live six hours apart and do not get to see each other often enough. We were looking for a quiet place to relax and visit with each other. When I found this cabin on VRBO I was enchanted by the pictures and location. I was hopeful that the property would be like the pictures, but have experienced rentals where the "great" pictures must have been taken quite a while ago. This was not the case here! Liz and her husband provide renters with an exceptionally clean and cozy cabin. Their attention to detail is evident throughout the property. Renting from them was a pleasure, and my sister and I plan to make renting this property a yearly ritual!!! Thanks again Liz : )

Date of Stay: 05/06/11 Review Submitted: 05/10/11

The advert for this cottage is not only accurate but possibly even underplays how wonderful this cottage is! There is a glider on the porch, perfect for a morning coffee in the warm sunshine. The upstairs loft is filled with books, games and dinosaur figurines for children. The two main bedrooms are nicely decorated, there is an excellent washer/drier, the kitchen is well equipped. There is a bookshelf filled with a range of books for adults, chessboard and pieces. The cottage is clean, well presented and delightfully secluded in the woods (yet easily accessible). My partner and I enjoyed a relaxing weekend reading, playing chess, toasting marshmellows in the fire, sitting on the porch drinking coffee in the early morning spring sunshine, listening to the birds, watching the chipmunks. For hikers, the Appalachian trail is right nearby and there are a host of outdoor activities within easy driving distance of this cottage. The owners are helpful, send you detailed instructions and genuinely want you to have a lovely stay.

Everything Provided for a Great Getaway!

Date of Stay: 04/15/11 Review Submitted: 04/18/11

My family and I just stayed at this lovely, lovely cabin, and I cannot say enough good things about our perfect time there! It was immaculately clean, decorated beautifully, the beds were divine, and the kitchen was stocked with all of the trappings for fun. We arrived to find the ingredients for s'mores on the kitchen table and wood already IN the fireplace, waiting to be lit! And more about the kitchen table - it was big and roomy enough for us to all be seated comfortably. The secluded property is lush with woods and the sound of the creek was mighty soothing. Due to the terrible storms we'd just had, we followed the owner's suggestion of taking the kids on the local steam train in Kempton (such history!) and wound up at Cabela's where the kids got to see lots of taxidermy (though I didn't love that, they were certainly engaged) and huge aquariums. All this, while the men stocked up and actually enjoyed shopping : ) We went up to Hawk Mountain and saw a truly magnificent view with swooping turkey vultures; got some great insight from the very informed volunteers stationed at each viewpoint. We did find the "secret swing" and - wow! - it was awesome!

This cabin made for a perfect recharging girls weekend away from the busy city. Liz had made sure we had absolutely everything we needed before we arrived, and the house was so cozy and welcoming upon our arrival, we lit a fire and just relaxed for 2 days. I'm sure I will make a return trip to the cabin, and perhaps take more advantage of some of the surrounding activities, because there are plenty, but knowing also full well that I might not leave the house at all, and be totally ok with that too!

The cabin is beautifully decorated. Simple but perfect. The layout is open and spacious. The fireplace is outstanding and really adds to the romantic atmosphere. The owner's organization is perfection from the local tourist info to the typed out directions and labels on how to work the TV and the stereo. I felt like I was staying at " Martha Stewart's" place. The book that the owner leaves with ideas and attractions has excellent suggestions. We changed our whole itinerary based on the book. The activities we chose to take part in where fun. However, I could have stayed in the house the whole time, relaxing and reading the great books that are provided. The loft area was wonderful for our kids, they played up there the whole time; there are great toys from Thomas the train to dinosaurs to keep the kids engaged. Let's not forget about the secret swing......kids loved it. Everything is provided from linens to towels to extra blankets......much better than four star hotel!

Owner response:I love this review! This says it all. Ken and I try very hard to anticipate what you will need and want. The beauty of this place is that you don't have to think. We have done all of the thinking ahead of time. You can just come here to "be". Or, you can pick up our guide and say, "What adventure will we have today?"

Liz & Ken, First of all I want to thank you for accommodating us on such short notice. My wife and I are packing to leave this morning and I just had to sit down and write my review of your wonderful place. For two people who have crazy work schedules and need to reconnect or unwind this place is perfect. The fireplace (stocked with wood, and kindling) is relaxing. The quaintness of the location and the feeling of being all alone are great, yet the cottage has all of the modern necessities that people in this day and age need. Wifi, stereo, DVD player, Ipod connection, washer, dryer, etc... Fully stocked does not begin to describe the kitchen. All the toys a cook needs even spices and basics that you have to drag with you when you go away... The snow and ice made hiking impossible for us, as we are not true hikers, but taking a day to visit wineries was nice and just being alone makes all the difference. Took a drive to the town of Saint Clair (just north of Pottsville) and went to a neat little restaurant called the Wooden Keg. Irish bar with historical room in the basement that tells the story of the Molly Maguire's. Good food and friendly people. We will be planing a return trip either in spring to see the place in full bloom, or the fall to see the leaves turn... Maybe both... Bill and Danielle Vetter

We wanted to spend a few days away with our adult children and Ken & Liz's place looked like the place to do it. This is a great place! We enjoyed two great days of cross county skiing on the near by lanes up to and along the Appalachian trail. The cottage was neat and cozy and recently refurbished--beautiful really. Nestled in a remote quiet spot in the forest. A perfect place to rest and bolster relationships with loved ones.

Kitchen is fully equipped to make marvelous meals and bedrooms are spacious with excellent comfortable beds. We love it all and highly recommend!

A much needed getaway

Guest: David M. (Brooklyn, New York)
Date of Stay: 12/30/10 Review Submitted: 01/07/11

I don't think I could have picked a better weekend to get away from the hustle and bustle that is New York city...especially after the 24 inches of snow we were hit with. Streets weren't plowed, cars were stuck in the middle of the road and buses and trains weren't working. NYC was essentially paralyzed. In my 38 years in New York City, I'd never seen anything like it. I needed this mini-vacation now more than ever. This was my first New Years Eve off from work in almost 14 years as a Police Officer. I wanted to make it extra special for my wife and two kids (8 & 9)...and special it was...from the moment we walked in, we were at ease. Liz left us a hand written note accompanied with a Smores treat. She even had the firewood all set up for us in the fireplace. All it needed was a match. The house is simply beautiful and pictures really don't do it any justice. Enough books and magazines to keep you busy for months. And the loft was an extra special treat for the kids which they absolutely adored. They loved climbing up and down the ladder. It was like a treehouse for them. You can tell that Liz and Ken put a lot of thought into their little treasure...not wasting any space. Every nook and cranny is accounted for and has a purpose. It sits tucked into a mountain and if you sit out on the porch, you can even hear the stream nearby. If adventure is your niche, put on your hiking boots, grab the hand-drawn map, and set off on a mini-adventure to find the "secret-swing". I guarantee the kids will love it--mine did. Depending on the time of year, you'll find a host of activities nearby. Liz has taken the time to highlight anything and everything you can think of to go see. Check out the Wolf Sanctuary. If you're here in December, Koziars Village is a must see. It was spectacular. Christmas lights like you wouldn't believe. I bet you can see this place from space. It was awesome! But if you're not the sightseeing type...trust me...kick off your shoes, light a fire, open a book and just relax. You'll truly feel rejuvenated by the time you leave. If you're looking for the perfect getaway from your busy life...look no further...you've finally found it.

a fairy tale come true...

Words cant really do our stay at your enchanting cabin justice. We expected Goldilocks or Little Red Riding Hood to knock on the door at any moment! I didn't think places like your cabin truly existed! You thought of EVERY detail...from wood waiting in the stone fireplace to smores,, We could feel the love you put into the place. Everything was AMAZING! The kids LOVED the loft filled with toys and hubby and I enjoyed stretching out by the fireplace and reading some of the books and magazines. (He is making me order a copy of "The Dangerous Book for Boys" from Amazon!) Your book of "things to do" was great and we ventured out once or twice, (the family artists enjoyed Goggleworks and I like the flea market/farmer's market) but mostly we just enjoyed being a family and playing board games. (The REAL Christmas miracle was that there wasn't a single argument from the kids during our ENTIRE stay- proof that the cabin is "magic"!) The kids LOVED hunting for the "hidden swing" and we have VOWED to come back during the summer so that we can explore all of the warm weather things to do. Thank you, Liz and Ken, for the best vacation EVER!!! Our stay was truly a balm for my soul!!!! We can't wait to return!!!

Christmas cabin

Guest: Wendy (Philadelphia, PA)
Date of Stay: 12/02/10 Review Submitted: 12/09/10

My husband, daughter, and I just returned from one of our favorite places - now affectionately referred to as the "Christmas cabin" by our 3-year old. The snow flurries outside coupled with the warmth of the fireplace is hard to beat. We are repeat customers and have come in both the fall and the winter. If you want a place to get away from it all and enjoy some peace and solitude this is the place. The cabin has all the comforts and amenitites of home (internet, DVD player, toys, washer and dryer, etc.) but it is also tucked into the woods allowing for privacy and a sense of really getting away from it all . The owners provide exceptional customer service and are attentive to any needs - plus they provide s'mores fixings so who can beat that. A true treasure. . .

Relaxing Thanksgiving Getaway

Date of Stay: 11/27/10 Review Submitted: 12/02/10

My husband, toddler, mom and I rented the Appalachian PA cottage and had a wonderful time over the thanksgiving weekend. The house was very comfortable with a great fireplace, kitchen and living area. My daughter loved it and enjoyed being up in the loft with us jumping from one bed to the other laughing and playing with all the toys. I loved the swing and going to Blue Marsh Lake for a mountain bike ride with hubby. We will definitely try to come back either in the snowy months or in the summer. Thanks Liz and Ken!

Perfect Getaway for a Family w/Kids

Guest: Gina (Northern VA)
Date of Stay: 11/24/10 Review Submitted: 02/28/11

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving at the cabin, and Liz was right that our kids would spend the whole time in the loft--the adults did, too! We built a huge Lego town, all 7 of us working together, and made some very special memories. We thoroughly enjoyed the fireplace, all Liz's attention to detail, and had all we needed in the kitchen for our Thanksgiving Feast. We all slept comfortably, though we did have trouble staying up past the kids since sound traveled so easily in the cabin. I would definitely recommend the property and we hope to come back again in the spring or summer season to enjoy the outdoors more.

Home Away From Home

Guest: kay and John (Wayne, PA)
Date of Stay: 11/19/10 Review Submitted: 11/21/10

Our weekend at Liz and Ken's "cottage" could not possibly have been better. Warm, cozy, comfortable rooms: they have thought of everything. Liz is right when she says that if you need something you don't immediately see, look around. It is probably there, somewhere. Because the weather was so unusually mild, we were able to sit outside on the porch glider and enjoy the beautiful sunsets at the end of each day. Then, for us, after filling each day with several interesting side trips, we welcomed these evenings with soft music and reading, writing, and reflection. Because Liz had thoughtfully sent in advance pages of interesting sites we might want to visit, we had our plans made in advance, maps, and GPS. This was great because en route, we visited the Reading Public Museum -- a treasure in Reading, PA. The Yuengling Brewery was fascinating, and they provide sneakers (hundreds of pairs) if you happen to be wearing flip flops or clogs. There are stairs to climb and a damp cave floor (only 40 ft. below ground). Liz has provided dozens of brochures, etc. to provide info on what to do, where to go. Right in our "backyard, the view of a mountain foothill right outside the bedroom window thrilled John each morning. I loved the kitchen. Actually, we loved everything about the home and our weekend and are looking forward to return visits. Thank you, Liz and Ken. Your home is beautiful. Perfection!

The pictures don't do this place justice. It's clean and well-maintained and 1000 times better than I could have ever expected. The location is great and the owner provides amazing a whole book full of things to do in the area. The Yuengling Brewery is a must see! We also visited the Long-Trout Winery (which has a disc golf course too) and had an absolute blast! I would recommend this property to anyone.

idyllic charm in the woods

Guest: nanny (ireland)
Date of Stay: 09/17/10 Review Submitted: 09/30/10

after a long haul flight, complete with jet-lag, followed by a scenic drive to berks county, i arrived at the cabin in the woods. at first i was so weary i only wanted to fling myself on the nearest bed. but once i glimpsed this sweet homestead i became intrigued. natural branches formed the front of the porch, which has an old fashioned swing seat on it, perfect. inside i found a very inviting kitchen, complete with generous table. i had a feeling my weekend need go no further than the porch seat and this table. however, the kitchen was open into a comfy family room, complete with stone fire place and telly. to cap this, a loft bedroom which is accessible only by a large wooden ladder. this is quite a feature, in fact its positioning in the middle of the room and its look, made me think of it as a sculpture; now i think every home must have one. further into the cabin are 2 charming bedrooms, as good as any top hotel for comfort and quality. a well fitted out bathroom completes this nest. when i finally finished oohing and ahhing, i did make it to the very comfy bed for a good nights sleep, my only problem was leaving it. but i was enticed by coffee on the porch, looking out thru only trees and more trees. what more does one want? maybe a stroll thru one of the many hiking paths... perhaps later on when i have finished basking.

Cozy, Charming and Comfortable Cabin in the Woods!

Guest: Carolyn (Philadelphia suburbs)
Date of Stay: 09/12/10 Review Submitted: 09/20/10

My husband and I just returned from from a quick four day get-away and we could not have been happier with our choice of lodging! The cabin is cozy, immaculately clean and stocked with everything you need -- and more. Unlike some rental places, this home reflects the personality of its owners, from lots of interesting books and games to carefully selected art work and a "cook's kitchen." We brought all of our own groceries (and wine!) with us and ate "at home" each night after hiking the nearby Appalachian Trail. In the morning, I drank my coffee while sitting on the comfy porch glider and listening to the birds. This is a perfect get-away spot - in fact, you might want to just hang at the cabin and do nothing but relax and take naps! We can't wait to return!

The cabin is extraordinary. The minute you walk in the door it feels like home. Liz has thought of everything from the morning coffee (great grinder), to where to eat, to a map to a pretty fantastic swing. If you could possibly want to do it, Liz has suggestions and directions for getting there. The fireplace kept the cabin warm during the chilly nights and the numerous windows and fans kept us comfortably cool during the hot august afternoons. The shelves are filled with books on everything from wilderness first aid to Stephen Hawkings theories on the Universe. If there's a board game you want its probably there. I've never been to a better prepared vacation rental and cannot wait to get back out there.

Can' wait to go back!!

Guest: Emily (NYC)
Date of Stay: 08/12/10 Review Submitted: 08/18/10

We had a fantastic time at the cabin. The weather was cool and we lit a fire every night, an awesome treat in early August! We had expected it to be as warm as it was in NYC or on Long Island so we were bummed when we saw there was no AC but since you are in the mountains and there is tons of shade it never got hot enough for us to even want AC. We had grand plans of visiting winerys but never got around to it. We spent most of our days exploring the area around the cabin and one afternoon on the Applachian Trail. The cabin itsself is better stocked that we could've imagined. We had a superb time and are already figuring out when we can go up in the winter!

Great weekend stay!

Date of Stay: 08/06/10 Review Submitted: 09/05/10

This cabin was a great place to stay. Me, my boyfriend and our friends from Ohio stayed here the weekend of August 6th for two nights and it was wonderful. We used it as our base for a Daughtry concert and to do Hershey park and enjoyed every minute. Coming back to such a cozy place away from everything was great after spending each day surrounded by people. We lit the fire both nights, even in August, and stayed up late talking and catching up with each other. It was amazing and the perfect place to relax, unwind and get away from our busy lives. So quiet and surrounded by nature it feels like you're the only people in the world. We already wish we could go back. Thanks for a wonderful stay!

Quiet and peaceful cabin

Guest: Carolyn G. (Massachusetts)
Date of Stay: 08/01/10 Review Submitted: 08/18/10

We stayed at the cabin with our 2 kids (ages 6 and 3) for a week. They loved the loft and all the toys in it. It took my 3 year old a couple of days to master the ladder but he did eventually get it. They also loved the "hidden" tree swing and stream in front of the cabin. We spent our time going to Hershey Park/Chocolate World, Amish Country, Strasburg RR, and The Please Touch Museum in Philly. We enjoyed the quiet and peaceful location after spending the day around lots of screaming kids. Also, the temperature at the cabin was about 10 degrees cooler than Hershey or Philly due to the higher elevation and tree canopy around the cabin. The owner of the cabin is very accomodating with helping to find out more information about any tourist destinations you have in mind to visit. There is also lots of well organized info about area attractions, restaurants, etc at the cabin. We had no GPS, no laptop, and no Blackberry and were never lost (no, we are not Amish). The cabin is kept very clean. It was very convenient to have a washer/dryer at the cabin. Also, the kitchen is well stocked with all the dishes, pots, pans, and utensils you would need. All you need is your food. A small grocery store is about 8 miles away and there is a much larger Giant supermarket in Pottsville (approximately 15 miles away). If you enjoy being out in the woods, but don't want to camp out, this is the vacation rental for you. There are other cabins down the road, but not close enough to see or hear other people. Overall a great rental!!

Appalachian Trail Cabin

Dear Liz and Ken Though we never met, we feel we know you through your lovely cabin. The main room is sweetly "comfey" and the bedrooms were really cool and airy with your perfectly white bed-linens. We loved sitting on the porch in the mottled light filtering through the trees, watching Bingo 'point' at rustlings in the undergrowth! A great break from the heat of Philly. We hope we can come back in the autumn and bring the family---we will then be able to make a fire and take advantage of the marshmallows! Thanks and best wishes, Liz and Mike

The house was beautifuland the location was ideal. Everything we needed was there for us. We loved hearing the creek down the hill from the house and the solitude. We enjoyed sitting on the front porch in the evenings. Lots to do in the area. We hiked Hawk Mountain, which has a gorgeous view from the top. Close enough to Elmwood Zoo in Norristown and Philly Zoo to make them a day trip. The only down side to the house was the lack of air conditioning. My family minds the humidity and found sleeping uncomfortable. Unfortunately because of that we would not rent the house again. For those who don't mind the heat and humidity, I would highly recommend staying here.

Beautiful land, beautiful cottage!

Guest: Susan A. (Brooklyn)
Date of Stay: 06/26/10 Review Submitted: 07/12/10

This is a wonderful, comfortable, cared for home. It is very well equipped and clean--beautifully renovated. The loft is full of toys for children, and there are plenty of books throughout the many shelves that line the walls. The owners have gone out of their way to offer information and guidance on anything visitors might be interested in doing. There will be no need to do your research, as there is a large and very detailed manual of information that has been compiled for guests. The owner, Liz, even forwards a document ahead of your stay that gives plenty of information about possibilities for exploration. The land around the cottage is lovely. My children enjoyed climbing behind the house and finding the 'hidden' swing and reveled in playing in the creek. One of our major high points was going on a trail ride at Pleasant Valley Ranch, which is not too far (Liz would give you information about this.). Otherwise, we spent most of our time in the comfort of the cabin and exploring the land. I cannot say enough about the owners of the cottage and the care they put in making sure that your stay goes far beyond expectations. We'll definitely return!

Many thanks again for making it possible for us to escape Philly for a few wonderful, relaxing days. Looking at the "before" pictures in your little photo album made me realize what vision you and your husband had to transform the cottage into such a welcoming, cozy place. I used to write about home and design for the Philadelphia Inquirer Sunday Magazine (when it still existed), so I've seen a lot of renovations. I won't soon forget sitting on the glider in the early morning with a cup of coffee surrounded by a sea of green (even better before putting in contact lenses). We walked on the AT, hiked Hawk Mountain and spent many hours reading, listening to music and just enjoying the peace and quiet.

Great Spot, Great Cabin

Guest: BJeff (Indianapolis, IN)
Date of Stay: 05/29/10 Review Submitted: 08/01/10

I stayed at the cabin a couple months ago. We used this cabin for a gathering place for different family members. Some stayed here, some stayed at a local motel, but we all met up and used the cabin as "home base". It worked out really well. All the cabin bedrooms were full. The others came from the motel, and there was breakfast for a crowd made in the well-appointed kitchen. The cabin is just cute as can be with all the comforts of home in a cabin in the woods. It was immaculate and lacked for nothing. It's exactly as pictured - no bait and switch here. Expect a place you'd want to own yourself. I especially enjoyed sitting on the long cushioned glider on the front porch. We had a guitar and a singing session one evening and serenaded the animals. (or scared them all away). It's just a lovely spot and a lovely cabin. I could recomment staying any time of the year - each season has it's own specialness. It wasn't fireplace season when I was there. The stone fireplace would be awesome with a crackling fire. The Appalachian Trail is nearby, so if you're a hiker, you are in luck. The owner is just wonderful too. I would highly recommend this for a week or a weekend. It would be great for a romantic getaway. You can't go wrong. I'm hoping to make it back again next year.

What a great, relaxing time my sisters, brother and extended family had. Our purpose was to lay our mother to rest. Liz and Ken were very understanding and helpful. They allowed us to spread our Mother's ashes on their mountain. It gave us such a sense of peace and joy that we could grant our mother's wish in such a peaceful setting. This cabin has such a sense of calmness and well being. The minute you step in you can feel the love they have put into this place. It's simple but furnished nicely and practical. These days we all seem to want THE FINEST and expect it in material things. This place just felt like coming home. Liz had the makings for smores, forks and a fireplace ready. The cupboards had, coffee, hot choclate, tea, sweetners and spices in them. Ice in the fridge. Usually, you have to bring these things. We ranged in age from 22 to 62 and everyone had fun. We played games at night, sang songs, and played pranks, scaring the living daylights out of some. We all went to Cabelas' and checked it out and there's a great restaurant past Cabelas' about 3 miles on left that serves great food. While some people may think this sounds corny, we had such fun together and we all thought the time to leave came too soon. We all agreed this place was the perfect place for our destination. Anyone wanting to get away from it all this is the place to go. It's there but, forget about TV's, internet, telephones and the other crazy stuff and just enjoy the peace you feel there. Thanks again, Liz and Ken for sharing your cabin.
