Located in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Bernal Heights sits in the southeast part of San Francisco. Cozy homes tumble down the sides of a vast open space hill, affectionately referred to as "The Hill." There you will see runners, baby strollers, dogwalkers, and those who come to watch the sun rise and set over "The City." Bernal rests on a solid earth-quake proof base of clay and stone. In fact, after the quake of 1906, many fled to Bernal Heights where 'earthquke cabins were constructed as a refuge from the aftermath of that amazing quake. On a neighborhood stroll, one can still find earthquake cabins scattered around, now converted into charming homes.

The inhabitants of Bernal Heights are very alert to the goings on in their special corner of San Franciso and community involvement is a given. From babysitting co-ops to Meals on Wheels for the ill and elderly, Bernal takes care of it's citizens and it's environmnent. Each 3rd Sunday of the month, volunteers scan the hill, pulling up non-native plantings to give the natural horticulture a chance.

Being yet another of San Francisco's gentrified neighborhoods, Bernal's main street, Cortland Avenue, is cluttered with shops and services, a bank, flower shop, library , (with a lovely mural on the ceiling) a video store, locksmith, and health food. Families, professional, singles,, and the elderly, roam the friendly streets of Bernal Heights. Free parking makes being at Janie's Nest easy.

However, let's not forget that you will be staying in one of the most beautiful cities in the world with full access to it's theater's museums, parks, amazing cuisine, and a more than friendly, population. San Francisco with it's hills, provides postcard settings around the entire Bay. Stroll across the Golden Gate Bridge, explore the Presidio, walk along the Embarcadero or catch a ferry to Marin County or Alcatraz Island or simply take a Bay Cruise. 'under' the Golden Gate!
