Peter warned us to mind the road and not to be distracted by the beauty of the surroundings. Well he wasn't joking, we really did have to mind the road because the scenery driving up to the cottages was amazing! And the views from all the windows of the cottages and the garden are equally amazing. It is just the most perfect location if you enjoy beautiful scenery, peace and comfort. Our kids had complete freedom to play and discover the property and we could relax and enjoy everything. Lots of places are near Barralach so there is plenty to do. We would definitely recommend the Barralach cottages. Hope to go back!

Peter, All of us were....what would the word be?..."enraptured" is what comes to mind...by the mysterious and enduring and grand setting that is your wonderful sheepfarm/lodge/holiday home. Son and Husband climbed the peek seen out the living area windows (base at the junction of the five roads) on a whim one morning and had such a fine time. We all hiked up the rise behind the house (Sifin?) in a howling wind and felt good to have the cobwebs blown out of our minds/hearts/lungs. It is a stunning and evocative place. Thank you for providing for us so very well and for being a part of locking in some extended family memory-making. The sheep were great surrogate hosts...such personalities! We had to leave to get Husband back to his other life (work), but we thoroughly enjoyed our days in your world. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

My family and I spent a week at Barralach in September 2012, and what an awesome stay we had! The cottages have a spectacular location, far up the country roads in true mountainous beauty. Coming from Cape Town we are quite accustomed to beautiful surroundings, but the views from Barralach simply blew us away with more stunning scenery at every turn. Conveniently though, the cottages are only a few short minutes from the shops, pubs and beaches of Glenbeigh and Rossbeigh, and close to all the tourist attractions that the ring of kerry has to offer. We particularly liked the Kerry Bog Village Museum, and Burkes at Rossbeigh which had great horseback rides (kids included too), mini golf, and a big maze to get lost in. The cottages are clean, comfortable and well equipped throughout (good kitchen equipment, warm and comfy bedding and wellies for our mountain walks). Peter, our host, was both friendly and helpful and we loved coming home at the end of the day to a delicious dinner prepared by Betty. There is plenty of information on the area provided, which helped us find our way round and learn about the history of Kerry. And when the weather didn't play along with our plans we played board games by the warm fire - Jenga being our family favorite. On waking in the morning we were delighted to find sheep and hares roaming around the lawn, and we developed a morning ritual of having a picnic breakfast on the rock table at the end of the garden - what a fabulous way to start the day! My children really wanted to sleep in their own separate cottage, and initially i wasn't so sure, but I was relieved to find a baby monitor there that we used to keep a listening ear on them and so it worked out well. They loved exploring the mountain and having their adventures among the trees just behind the house. I can really recommend Barralach for a wholesome healthy family holiday - We are certainly keen to return!

Owner response: Thank you for such a charming review and so useful for other families. I must remember to emphasise the attractions of Burkes and the Bog Village in future editions of our brochure.

Pictures do not make this charming place justice. The location is just so special, far and up enough the mountain to feel surrounded by nothing but nature, yet so convenient as the pub is only 10 mins drive away! We found the property well maintained and with nothing to fault.. this is paradise for nature lovers. Because the accommodation is split in three cottages we found it ideal to rent for a joint holiday with friends. We can't wait to go back next year!.

Owner response: And we can't wait to welcome you back!

My husband and I arrived in Ireland with 5 of our closest friends to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary. We had a very informal plan to find a location for a vow renewal while we were there. After two days at Barralach, we realized we wouldn't need to go very far. When our anniversary arrived, we walked out of the cottage and renewed our vows 30 feet from the door, overlooking the Irish country side. I can't say enough about how beautiful the area is. The cottages are very comfortable, and the location is secluded enough for a relaxing stay, but there's plenty of site-seeing, hiking and great dining nearby. We definitely want to go back, and we don't want to wait until our 20th.

Owner response: Yes, so many of us feel a communion with Nature here, a deep spiritual surge. Do come back soon. Peter.

Nothing quite prepares you for Sheep Farm cottages. Despite the detailed directions to the cottages, you cannot quite banish the nagging doubt that perhaps you have got it wrong, as you climb higher and yet higher up the mountain track. But trust in your host, engage first gear and round the next bend there below you are the trees and rooftops of the cottages. It's dramatic, but nothing compared to the scene that awaits you in front of the cottages. The view is stunning, a magnificent mountain panorama. To your right the wonderfully named Mac Gillycuddy's Reeks, below you the silvery waters of Lough Caragh and almost in touching distance the finely sculpted peaks of Derryfanga. We were lucky enough to arrive on a fine afternoon with the countryside at its best. For the rest of our stay we had every type of weather that you could expect in Western Ireland. But these cottages are just what you need, this is not urban boutique living but green-boot country. The main cottage comfortably accommodated our party of ten, either sitting round a log fire or having an evening meal together. There are plenty of maps and guides to the local areas and helpful notes about the cottages. Sheep Farm Cottages are clean and well stocked with everything you need for a holiday in the country. We enjoyed visiting the local pubs where the Guinness is smooth and cold and as good as it gets. For lunch I would recommend the fish chowder soup, hot and nourishing and usually served with delicious soda bread. We particularly enjoyed visiting the Ring of Kerry, Valentia Island and the Dingle Peninsula. Don't be put off by the narrow back roads, they are well maintained and worth exploring, often leading you through some magnificent country, especially around Mac Killycuddy's Reeks. I would have no hesitation in recommending Sheep Farm Cottages. My only advice to anyone staying is to make sure you keep your cottage doors closed or your room could be invaded by a small flock of damp but friendly sheep ! A wonderful holiday, all ten of us left reluctantly with fond memories that will stay with us for years to come. We will be back to enjoy the hills, the soft rain and the comfort of a roaring fire and a glass or two of fine Irish whisky ! Irish hospitality at its very best.

Owner response: Thank you for this most charming review, and please do come back. It is indeed true that lambs are curious about the indoors; we once found one actually on a bed! Better indeed to keep the doors shut! Peter

Barralach was the perfect location for our vacation! The accommodations were great for our group of 7 and could have comfortably accommodated several more. We loved being "off the beaten path" and yet close enough to conveniences and lots of sightseeing. We especially enjoyed scenic drives along the Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula and our visit to Blarney Castle. We also got in some great hiking, including Carrauntoohil -- the tallest mountain in Ireland. Peter was most helpful and very nice to work with. Thanks for helping our experience in Ireland be such a memorable one!

Owner response: Thank you for this charming review. In the Visitors’ Book, you also wrote that Barralach provided a great location to celebrate your tenth anniversary. Thank you for that too.

Very pleasant cottages, very well-equiped and very cosy atmosphere. Wonderful panorama, wildlife all around... The three cottages allow different groups of friends to keep their intimacy, and the large main cottage is fantastic for gathering at dinner time and spending evenings around the fireplace. Everything was clean and in good working condition. Peter, the owner is very caring and very receptive to visitors and always tries to make them feel at home, taking time to give a phone call to make sure everything is OK and giving wise tips to make the best possible holiday. There are many activities to do around : walking (the Kerry Way is really great!), riding, angling... Pubs and supermarkets are about 10 minutes away, the Dingle Peninsula is not far, and if the weather permits it, there are very lovely sand beaches ( Rossbeigh, Inch, Kells +++) where you can enjoy the pleasure of swimming in fresh but clear waters. Spending two weeks at Barralach makes you feel you are alone and far from everything but without any of the inconvienients induced by isolation. A great experience!

Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, families with young children.

Owner response: We too adore Barralach and as you can see are blessed with wonderful visitors! This charming visitor told us he had taken a trip to the Skellig Islands on a previous occasion, so did not mention it again here. But for others, such a trip from Barralach is an unmatchable experience, historical, spiritual, geographical and ornithological.

The visitor comments found elsewhere on this site only mildly prepared us for the lovely Barralach. The charming stone cottages, comfortable, lovingly maintained and perched on a spectacular hillside, greeted us like old friends. The view forward to the valley and lakes and behind to the hilltop and sea beyond assured us that "here we are where we are meant to be". Detailed notes and a friendly call from the owner provided more than enough information for local area sightseeing and activities such as riding on the beach to hiking to dining out. Barralach is a wonderful and unique retreat for those exploring the Dingle and Kerry peninsulas as well as the Killarney National Park area. It is a very special home away from home that I would recommend to anyone who wanted to experience Ireland's essence.

Owner response: Thank you, Linda. As you say, the cottages are lovingly maintained. So we hugely appreciate having visitors like you. Do come back soon. Peter
