My first trip to BHI could not have been more perfect. Although I have rented many homes in NJ, NC and Florida, this was by far the most pleasant experience. Mimi could not have been more responsive and enjoyable to work with. Star Gazer is a beautiful home in a perfect location on breathtaking Bald Head Island. The house had everything we could possibly need for a fun and relaxing vacation. The beds and baths were beautiful and comfortable. When not on the beach or exploring the island, our kids really enjoyed all the board games, video games and puzzles. In addition to the beautiful indoor space, the various outdoor patios were enjoyed by all. I must also mention that Mimi did a fabulous job of communicating and keeping us informed regarding all the fun events that were taking place on the island the week we were there. Once again, we can not say enough about Mimi, her beautiful house and wonderful Bald Head Island.

I want to recommend to anybody looking for a great house to stay at on Bald Head Island make sure you consider Star Gazer. We have stayed at ocean front home and while those are nice, Star Gazer is special. It is very private and when you are in the house you feel like you are the only person on the island. However, the beauty of the house and it's location is that you are only minutes from all of the main attractions, i.e. beach, grocery store, harbor, etc. The house is well maintained and has all of the necessary items to make your vacation special. If there are any issues, one phone call is all it takes to get the issue resolved immediately. It is a great family home where everybody can either sit in the kitchen or in the living room, or outside on the multitude of porches and spend some quality time. I would highly recommend this house to any body looking for a great vacation or get a way on the island. It is special

Staying at Star Gazer was such a treat! The home is beautifully decorated and most comfortable for a young family. It is in a great location just a few minutes drive from East Beach in one direction and the Market in the other. We appreciated the home owners attention to details both inside and outside of the home. Their providing access to bikes, beach chairs and various "toys" meant we had less to bring from home, which was most helpful! Working with the Leach's was such a pleasure, Mimi is very organized and handled all our needs with ease. We so enjoyed our time on BHI and at Star Gazer!!

As first time visitors to BHI, we weren't sure exactly what to expect. Let me say, it was AWESOME! A true vacation. It is such a relaxing place and really allows you to 'get away from it all'. As far as Star Gazer goes, we have rented numerous houses through VRBO over the last 5 years and this home was by far the most comfortable and well appointed. The beds are comfortable (a huge deal for us... there is nothing worse than an uncomfortable bed) and the kitchen is well stocked. There are plenty of games and puzzles for all ages. The outside shower is awesome... so great to be able to clean off the sand outside. The kids loved the "kid room" and the video game systems. Cruising around the island on the golf carts was also very fun. The two carts at Star Gazer were great! Mimi was wonderful to work with throughout the process. She provided all of the information that first time visitors to the island would need. We had everything we needed, thanks to her guidance. However, we definitely brought too many clothes! A swimsuit, a couple pairs of shorts and a couple of shirts would have been enough for the week. If you are looking for a place to have a true vacation, BHI is the place for you. We'll be back!

Our daughter was married on Bald Head Island 4 years ago, so we have such pleasant memories each time we return. Our family and our son in-law's family return each year to the Island for a week...we always have a wonderful time together. This year we chose Star Gazer for our stay, and we certainly were not disappointed! Mimi has done a terrific job of making her home so welcoming to guests. Everything is so well stocked, and the gathering room was a great place for the families to hang out together. We love being close to East Beach and the Shoals Club. We dined at home several times throughout the week. The kitchen was great to work in, and the grill was a hit, as well. There were an abundance of dishes, glasses, silverware, pans, etc.; sometimes these items are at a minimum in rental homes, but Star Gazer was stellar in having everything we needed for a crowd! Mimi gets an A+ as far as communicating with us and responding to any inquiries we had. She is very accommodating and a pleasure to work with.

Our family had such a wonderful vacation at Star Gazer. The house was beautiful! When the tram pulled up to the house, we knew we would have a lovely week. When we stepped inside, everything was just the way it was advertised-clean, well-appointed, and lovely! The porch was my favorite spot to listen to the waves with my book and cup of tea! The kids loved the freedom of taking the bikes to the beach or to Turtletime! The bedrooms were comfortable and everyone slept well! The living space was grand! Each of us (there was 7 in our group-4 adults, 3 kids(teenagers, really!) felt so lucky to have found such an amazing house. We felt as if we were living in a treehouse! The kitchen (and grill) made making dinner easy! We loved sitting together at the table to enjoy family dinnertime! A pre-requisite from my husband was that the house have enough seatting for us. Not only did Star Gazer have that but it had two tables!! The homeowner was very, very helpful! She answered all questions and even emailed information from the island about things that would be happening while we were there. She also contacted us on our return to let us know that we had left something-and mailed it to us! We could not have found a more welcoming and helpful homeowner! Thank you! I would recommend Star Gazer to any family wishing to explore Bald Head Island. My family and I would love to come back and spend more time enjoying Star Gazer and Bald Head Island!!

Once again Bald Head Island has proved to be a very relaxing vacation destination for my family. My family loves Bald Head because it doesn't have all the "bell and whistles", but it is truly a place to enjoy nature and spend time with friends and family. Our days were spent beach combing, looking for alligators, going on nature walks, finding sand dollars and riding bikes. Additionally, we have stayed in numerous rental homes on vacations and StarGazer is by far the most accommodating house we've stayed in. Mimi has the house very well stocked. My kids especially loved the game selection. The house is perfectly suited for two families even with younger children. Mimi is excellent to work with and goes above and beyond to be accommodating. You will thoroughly enjoy your stay at StarGazer and on Bald Head Island.

I had the pleasure of returning to the Stargazer for the 3rd time for yet another amazing vacation. It was as beautiful and welcoming as always. It rained a couple of days which never matters because there is lots to do inside the home. The owners keep it stocked with games and jigsaw puzzles! This place is absolutely gorgeous and I simply cannot wait until I can return again.

Hello Fellow Renters of Star Gazer: I would like to say that we had a wonderful time at Mimi's lovely Star Gazer house. It was exactly as described, with a lovely kitchen, very nice and comfortable bedrooms (with excellent beds), and superior bathrooms. The upstairs master bath has a particularly excellent shower with body sprays! The house was in terrific condition and was very comfortable. Our kids stayed in the room with bunk beds and a trundle and were very satisfied with that arrangement. We also had an au pair travelling with us and she stayed in the fourth bedroom with the queen bed. Again, she was very satisfied with this room. The photos of the house are completely accurate; it is truely a lovely house. If you are seeking a BHI rental that is in the Maritime Forest close to the beach and to the park, then I think you will enjoy this house very much.

Our stay at Star Gazer was our first visit to Bald Head Island, and we were not disappointed! Mimi has taken care of every detail that you might need, and was patient with our questions before our visit. The home is lovely and well thought out, with the upper level being in the trees, giving a sense of privacy and serenity. A favorite was sitting on the porch with our morning coffee and grandson, swinging on the porch swing and hearing nothing but peace and quiet. There is quality in the workmanship and amenities of the home, and Mimi has taken great care in providing all that you might need for your stay. With our grandson being young, the high chair, gate, and crib were greatly appreciated! We also enjoyed cooking in the well appointed kitchen. We take great memories with us, along with an appreciation for Bald Head Island and Star Gazer.

We stayed at Star Gazer on our fourth trip to BHI. We always prefer the Cape Fear Station due to its proximity to East Beach and the Shoal's Club. Star Gazer is an easy bike ride to the East Beach access points and the Shoal's Club and within walking distance of Turtle Central. This is great for those who have older kids who want to explore independently. The amenities in the house were as described - and we especially enjoyed the two bicycles and the two golf carts. That made it much easier for our group of ten to get around. There are a few minor items needing tending too, but we appreciate that the major problem we encountered (clogged washing machine) was promptly fixed. Thank you for that!!! The owner of this property is very nice and an enjoyable person with whom to exchange emails. She is also prompt in responding to questions and returning the security deposit. I also appreciate that she clearly states all of her expectations regarding care and usage of her property. Our favorite part of this visit to BHI was the night time Turtle Walk. Please support the Conservancy by becoming members...and learn more about BHI's loggerhead turtles by attending a Turtle Walk!

Our first visit to Bald Head Island was delightful! We loved everything about the island...golf carts, turtle walks, canoeing, the beach & Shoals Club, nature, and oh, yes, we loved Star Gazer. We have 6 adults and 4 children in our family and we all felt at home in the spacious rooms, and the wonderful porches. Sometimes, we couldn't decide where to sit and enjoy the views. We enjoyed preparing our meals in the well-stocked kitchen and dining together at the cherry table. Mimi was very helpful in answering questions prior to and during our visit. She has made the house very comfortable for her guests. The kids enjoyed the golf carts...everyone was willing to go to the Maritime Market for a few more groceries. We will recommend Star Gazer to friends and relatives, although we hope that the beauty of Bald Head Island remains a bit of a secret so it doesn't become too over run with tourists. It's perfect just the way it is! We hope to return for another wonderful week in the future. Thanks Mimi for your part in making our week so memorable!

Our family of 7 plus grandparents stayed at Stargazer this summer and had a magnificent time! The house is well laid out with 2 spacious masters and plenty of room for the kids. We enjoyed the kitchen and the ample dining space for family dinners and card games. The 2 golf carts were so handy and provided our group flexibility in our days. Stargazer has comfortable beds, close proximity to the beach, lovely porches to extend the living outdoors, and the owners are great to work with. The club membership at Shoals made beach trips a snap, by providing beach towels and umbrellas to families right at the beach entrance. We were able to enjoy 3 of the adult bikes and just rented a child's bike for our 9 year old. What a lovely vacation!

What a beautiful home the Star Gazer is. Bald Head Island is a wonderful place for vacation. We took ten of us for a week and had a wonderful time. The house is very accommodating for a large group. Plenty of room for everyone. The kids especially liked riding everywhere in the golf carts. The best part for me was the large dining table and we could all sit down together and have our meals together. Something families don't get to do much. Access to the beach and pool made everyone happy. Some of stayed at the pool while others sat and played at the beach. We took the scavenger hunt and the kids had fun driving over the island and looking for all the items. I would recommend taking a week and relaxing at Bald Head Island. It was so wonderful not to have cars, phones and traffic. A great place to relax and enjoy family time. Thanks for sharing your home with us!!!

Star Gazer is a beautiful home with top of the line everything. Great lay out and perfect for 7 adults. Mimi is great to work with - she was attentive and patient with all my questions. While there, a spider blew the fuse on the AC. We notified Mimi in the morning and by early afternoon it was repaired!

"In the 6+ years we have been visiting Bald Head, this house ranks at the top. The layout and design are ideal, as is the location. We are always partial to staying in the maritime forest, but this is the first time we've been on the eastern side of the island. We loved the close proximity to what I think is one of the best beaches in the southeast (the BHI east beach). "

This is our second visit to Star Gazer and, if possible, it was even more wonderful than the last visit. The place is so beautiful and so well-decorated that it screams elegance, yet it is very welcoming and warm. In addition to this amazing home, the restaurants were wonderful, the facilities were wonderful, the ferry ride was wonderful (and always on time!), and even the island grocery store was wonderful (and has, quite literally, everything!). Thank you for the opportunity to review this lovely place. We cannot wait to visit again.

Hi Mimi: Everything went quite well. We've stayed in a half-dozen houses on BHI over the past five years, and yours definitely ranked at the top in terms of amenities. The kitchen was spacious and well- equipped, which was really critical for us this trip, the dining area was a nice place to have a meal (we had 10 adults at the table, 3 kids at the breakfast bar, and a baby in the high chair), and the living area was a great place to relax. The open floor plan really allowed us all to spend quality time together, which was great since at any point in time we generally had a couple of people cooking or cleaning up, a couple more people hanging out with the kids, and others chatting around the table or on the sofa. The 4-passenger cart was very zippy and the 6-passenger cart did just fine. We like the Cape Fear Station area for its proximity to East Beach, the forest, and the marsh, and the secluded nature of your block on Wash Woods was great. We had also rented the house right across the street, which was great for bringing hot dishes back and forth over the weekend. We did have one rainy day over the weekend, so the kids really appreciated having the board games and video games to pass the time. Thanks for allowing us to celebrate the holiday in your home. We'll definitely keep your house in mind for future trips! Jake

Heres the scoop on BHI and Mimi's place. No cars ergo., no noise[ just peace & quiet]no fumes [just clean air and clear skies]. Nature abounds in land & sea. Water was amazing , perfect most of the time, and even when not, it was great just to sit and watch it. The Shoals club , a mere 10 min.walk from the house, 3 min. by bike or cart, was all one could ask for. Just bring reading material, lotion and sun glasses .Pick up your towel at the club, and chairs and umbrella as you walk the boardwalk to the beach. Later you come back to the bright and airy house, which has all one could desire. Take your pick of the decks to relax on. Shade or sun, screened or not. Private or not. Mimi's place has it all.

Star Gazer was one of the most beautiful homes we have stayed in since coming to Bald Head Island for the last 5 years. Our two children loved sleeping in the bunk beds and having games available for them to use. Mom, Dad, and Aunt enjoyed the luxury of their bedrooms and private baths, in addition to all the modern appliances. Perfect location as it was only minutes to the Shoal's Club, beach, and Maritime Market. Enjoyed watching the birds in the trees outside the window whenever I was in the kitchen. Extremely quiet and peaceful. It was wonderful to have an outdoor shower to use in addition to the bicycles that were available. Anyone would thoroughly enjoy staying in this spacious and beautifully decorated home. Our family certainly did! Patti Gandossy Weddington, NC

Star Gazer is a beautiful retreat in the trees of the maritime forest of Bald Head Island. The reverse floor plan (living/dining/kitchen on second floor) absolutely MAKES this vacation home. We felt as though we were playing in a tree house--yet we were still enjoying all the modern appliances and conveniences. We loved sipping coffee in the morning on both the front open-air porch and the screened back porch. We were right up there within the trees, observing all the activity of the cardinals and the bees! Gorgeous hardwood floors and elegant bathrooms for each of four bedrooms make all guests feel special. Our grandsons loved the three-level beds in their room downstairs, and they played for hours on the Nintendo 64 after we returned from the beach. One of my favorite features was the four bicycles: we pedaled all over the island, reducing the pace a bit even from the normally slow speed that traveling by golf carts provides. Most days my husband and I cycled to the Shoals Club pool and beach, an easy "commute" even for senior citizens! Staying in Star Gazer on Bald Head Island made this one of the best vacations our family has ever taken.

Dear Mimi, Just wanted to say how much we enjoyed your home on Bald Head Island last week. We've been to BHI four times now. Our drivers' license teenagers liked it even more, now that they can drive the golf carts at their leisure. "No cars" on the island is one of the great attractions. And the Smith family trust has really kept the integrity of the island intact, along with their dedication to conserve & protect the island. Your place is well-located, close to the east beach and close to the new Shoals' Club, with its chairs and verandas and pool that are perfect for quality-time. Your house, being close to the southeast tip (1/2 mile away) was terrific. That corner is famous as the "Cape of Fear" with water almost surrounding you when you're on the sandy tip -- is great -- and many times of the day no one else is there. The golf course is first-rate and I've played many of the best in the country. The $45 greens fee for my teenage (17 and under) boys, was a fantastic deal. We played there twice, even though it was $140 for me -- well worth it. Your house is very comfortable, and the screened- in deck was perfect for our "in-home" dinners. Great week. And finally, we've taken our teenagers to Italy, England, Bermuda, Quebec, etc......and believe it or not, Bald Head is hands-down their favorite summer spot. No kidding. Thanks again. -Steve Bourg, Ellicott City, MD.

We can't begin to tell you how wonderful our week was and how beautiful the house was. Our first trip to the island was even better than expected. The kids found PLENTY to do all week. They rode bikes, walked, swam in the pool, hunted for shells, played on the beach, played in their beautiful rooms and just relaxed. They even went to the Kids night out event at the Shoals Club on Monday night (we ate at the Shoals club - excellent meal) and they made friends that they saw all week. I walked every morning for 1.5-2 hours around the island and on the beach. Jacqueline (our daugher age 7) loved setting the table with your beautiful dishes and silverware. But the best part was that we actually ate together as a family - no TV, just talking - we very rarely get to eat as a family at home so this was probably my favorite part of the week and something I will truly cherish. Afternoons were spent at the pool, beach, climbing Old Baldy (the kids loved that and did it several times!) and doing a whole lot of nothing. I can't say enough about the house. It was absolutely amazing. I loved every aspect of your decorating and choices in appliances. The beds were comfortable, the rooms were spacious and as I mentioned in one of my phone calls to you last week I loved the washer and dryer!!!!!! I bet I'll be your only renter that will say that to you! We did do the golf cart parade on July 4 and the kids had a blast. They loved decorating (I brought some things from home which I left with your craft box in the closet for your future projects) and they loved the parade itself. The decorated carts were amazing!!!! Some people really go all out!!! Well, can you tell that we all really enjoyed ourselves? Can you tell that it was the best vacation we ever took? Actually, someone came up to my son Nicholas yesterday and asked him how his vacation was. Well, this kid got the hugest smile on his face and said "It was AMAZING!" His smile was so big that the person who asked him had to laugh. We all felt that way. The island was magical, whimsical and our experience was one that we will cherish for a long time to come.
