The T-house, built from Cypress wood in the 1970’s, is loaded with charm, color, and incredible light. Only a short two blocks to the beach, it’s likely one of the best values on the island with it’s newly remodeled bathrooms, hardwood floors and living room furniture. The beds have all been recently replaced with comfortable mattresses and the kitchen has a new fridge and floor.
With all of it’s recent upgrades it’s a great bang for your buck!!
The spacious great room has cathedral ceilings that give you a sense of being in a tree house as it is surrounded by Palmetto Palms and Live Oak trees. It’s the perfect size for a small family, honeymooners, nature lovers, retirees, empty nesters, history buffs and artists. You’ll love having your morning coffee on the back porch while bird watching in the nearby lagoon.
My family and I have been going to Edisto since the late 70’s and have watched the island develop in wonderful ways. Located 40 miles south of Charleston, Edisto Island is chocked full of fun activities including a variety of galleries, shops and restaurants. You will be intrigued with the island’s native beauty, it’s history and the friendliness of the permanent residents.
The preservation of Edisto’s history coupled with its careful development and the islands conservation efforts have helped it become one of the best family beaches in South Carolina. Free of high- rise hotels and traffic lights, its charm is still in tack.
The island’s Piggly Wiggly, a full-sized grocery store, allows you to shop for groceries, wine and beer. There is an adjacent liquor store next door, and two produce stands on the island offering fruit and vegetables in season. When you are ready to dine out, there are several favorites spots including local barbeque, low country cooking, seafood, pizza, sandwiches and fine dining.
For golfers, the islands newly restored golf course, The Plantation Course of Edisto, is reminiscent of a scene out of Jurassic Park--it’s only missing the dinosaurs. I’m told those that have golfed there have really enjoyed the course.
For nature lovers, there’s a wonderful bike path that wraps around the island and bikes and kayaks are available to rent at “Edisto Essentials.” The nearby Ace Basin Wildlife Preserve, which also houses one of the islands plantations, is a must do for lovers of wildlife, and if you want to surround yourself with nature you might like a kayak tour that meanders through the wildlife preserve.
If you fish, Edisto Water Sports and Tackle offers both in shore fishing charts, which run in the creeks and off- shore which offer deep water fishing in the Atlantic. And islanders can be seen seen fishing and crabbing, shrimping in the creeks around the island.
Charming local shops and galleries are sprinkled throughout the island and are perfect for rainy day shopping.
For church goers, I’ve found all of the churches to be welcoming. The historic Presbyterian and Episcopal churches with on site graveyards are listed on the Historic S.C. register. If you like gospel music, you will find it alive and well on Sunday morning at the local African American Baptist church on the island.
If you are up for a day trip, you’re situated between historic Charleston and Savannah. Charleston is the closer of the two but they each are worth a visit and you will find them equally unique.
Maybe you want to escape winter and visit this quiet, lovely island with few tourists, or perhaps you love the fall and cooler weather when oyster season is just beginning and the shrimp are abundant. If spring is your favorite season you’ll find azaleas and wisteria vines in full bloom while watching the marsh come alive in shades of lime green. For many of us, it’s the summer that lures us to the ocean to escape the summer heat and enjoy the full bustle of the island and that’s when you will experience Edisto in full swing.
It matters not when you choose to come to Edisto because each season has it’s own mystery and beauty. So if you’re ready to get out of your rat race & kick off your shoes, then this could be your little piece of paradise. Come stay with us at the T-house, 404 Jungle Rd. You’ll be very glad you did!
