Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2005

Mt Hood is dear to my heart. I had a wonderful childhood growing up in Hood River, Oregon on the north side of the mountain. When not in school, friends and I were often at lakes and rivers, running through the orchards, traipsing through the snow, and skiing. Every December, my family and our Labrador Retriever, Lightning, made a day of exploring Mt Hood National Forest in search of our perfect Christmas tree (with USFS permit in hand).

After high school, I left Hood River Valley to go to the "other" valley (Willamette Valley) to attend Oregon State University. After graduation, I settled down in the Portland area and am twenty years into a career in the health care sector.

Mt Hood continues to be a central part of my life as I treasure every opportunity to be there.

Why the Owner Chose Government Camp

I was hiking one summer day, drove through Government Camp and saw phase 1 of Collins Lake Resort under construction. Construction was not a common sight on Mt Hood. There is very little private land on the mountain, it is mostly National Forest Service. Long story short, there was a waiting list to buy a chalet and it was well worth the wait to become part of the community.

Government Camp is the ideal location. Close to Portland (an hour from PDX) but seemingly a million miles away, Government Camp is a great place to spend a day or a week or more. I love to run up there for a weekend of hiking or kayaking. I've also been known to just take a good book and enjoy walking nearby on the property, grabbing breakfast at Huckleberry Inn and dinner at The Ratskeller. Whether looking for an active vacation outdoors or some quiet cozy time away, my chalet is the perfect getaway.

Beautiful Comfortable Clean - Like Home

My husband and myself have stayed in this chalet every winter the last 4 years. Our children and grand babies live in Portland, Oregon and they love spending time with us in Government Camp. Our kids are happy to come and go and we welcome the busyness of our family under one roof again! The kids enjoy time away from the city, skiing, snowmobile rides, and leaving us in charge of our grandchildren! The kitchen has 2 crockpots so we always have stew, chili or beans simmering during the day and have dinner at Timberline Lodge or walk to one of the restaurants in Government Camp. Everything is such a short distance away. The owner of this chalet is wonderful and has great knowledge of the area having been fortunate enough to grow up in Hood River/The Gorge area.

Perfect home for a Mt Hood vacation

Guest: Portland skibums (Portland OR)
Date of Stay: 02/02/11 Review Submitted: 02/06/11

This is the perfect place to stay and enjoy Mt. Hood. - Centrally located in Government Camp. Walk 1 block to the grocery, shops and brewpubs. - Heated garage - Perfect if you'd like to leave your ski gear on the racks. - 1 minute drive across the bridge to Ski Bowl, 5-10 minutes up to Timberline, or 15-20 minutes to Mt Hood Meadows. - Full-size laundry - Great kitchen - The two primary bedrooms are perfect. The third bedroom with the bunk beds is narrow and does not have a window. The door opening is covered with just a curtain. It's great for kids and teenagers, but adults might feel like they've been sent to the cave. I have a feeling this is typical of the Collins Lakes Condos. They all share a narrow, row-house, three-level design. The third bedroom gets squeezed. - The back patio is fully covered. It's a nice little space even in the winter. - We didn't watch any TV, but if you like to relax with a movie, you might be disappointed by the small, old-school TV's. In the living room an upgrade to a moderate sized HD flat screen would be appreciated by many, I'm sure. - The beds were comfortable and nicely appointed with ample blankets and comforters. The bathroom linens were nice. No cheap, thin towels here. - We enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this unit. - Communication with the owner was prompt and friendly. The sign-up process and the info guiding us to the unit were clear and easy to understand. No surprises.

Classy, Cozy & Convenient

This condo was a terrific base from which to explore the incredibly beautiful area on and around Mt. Hood and the Columbia Gorge. The condo was beautifully decorated, well-appointed in furniture and appliances, highly functional and strategically located at the 4,000-foot level of Mt. Hood. It is obviously lovingly cared for. It'd be worth flying across the country to stay for a week or two. We may just do that next year and will definitely see if this condo is available before booking our flight.

Wonderful condo minutes from the best skiing in Oregon

Guest: Art Teacher Amy (Seattle, WA USA)
Date of Stay: 04/09/10 Review Submitted: 05/10/10

My husband, myself, my daughter and my dad went up to the Collins Lake condo in April 2010. We wanted to ski at Mt. Hood one more time, and got lucky with the weather as it had just snowed up there the week before. It was s funny winter in the NW with not very much snow all winter. We were able to bring our dog as well, which is a must when we travel. The condo was beautiful. Really great kitchen and living area, gas fireplace. Nice decor. Good comfortable beds. The condos are kind of packed in to the development, but no one else was up there the weekend we were there so it was very quiet. We used the pool and it was warm, even in 35*. We tried to find the trails around the development but they were not cleared from the snow. Timberline is just 10 minutes up the road, but it was so windy up there they only had one lift open so be sure to check the website that day before going there. Mt Hood Meadows is bigger and better in my opinion-and only about 20 mins up the highway.( Be sure your car is equipped with 4WD or carry chains - that last part up to Meadows can be hairy in the deep of winter!) But nothing beats Timberline for summer skiing. Meadows has childcare too if you need it but it's very pricey -$100/day. That is why we asked my dad to come. He was our babysitter for the day for our 6 year old. I don't recommend this condo if you have a baby, as the stairs going up to both the 2nd and 3rd floor are very steep. And we seemed to do a lot of going up and down the steep stairs. There is tubing just 5 mins from the condo- you could actually walk there. It is $15pp, I think small kids were $10. Lots of fun. And there were places to eat - again you can walk to the general store and the little town of Gov't camp though there is not much there. I recommend stopping at a food store on your way up and just using the great kitchen. We did have a pretty good meal at the restaurant on the corner of highway 26 and the road to the condo. (forgot the name of it) Good pub style food, and looked like a good place for a beer. I wish we had stayed another night - we only stayed 2- and it was a great place to relax. And pretty easy to get to from Portland- just don't go on a Friday at 5pm which we did and it took a very long time to get there crawling out HWy 26 ! On the way home we found a shortcut from 26 through Gresham to 84. Once you get past Sandy the highway is wide and easy to drive - pretty much all the way up to Gov't camp. We definitely enjoyed our stay!
