Looking out over the quaint English garden

VRBO Bear stayed here - 08/17/2009 We were delighted to find this true Victorian gem in the heart of San Francisco. Built in the late 1800's, it has been tastefully restored into an elegant home with great attention to preserve the original character of the house while still offering every modern convenience. Throughout the home, there are plantation shutters, wooden and tiled floors, pressed ceilings and a great balcony. The entrance hall leads into a very comfortable living room featuring a large screen television and DVD player. The formal dining area has a music system and an assortment of books and board games to keep the family entertained after dinner.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a breakfast bar, large refrigerator and wine cooler (which came in handy after a trip to Napa Valley!). There is also a high chair available for children and a washer/dryer that made us feel right at home. The kitchen leads on to a lovely deck area with cozy sofas where you can barbeque or merely sit and look out over the quaint English garden - complete with hot tub!

Upstairs, one can discover 3 large, beautifully decorated bedrooms. One bedroom features bunk beds while another room has a double bed with an extra day bed. The master suite boasts an in-suite shower room, a fireplace and a delightful enclosed sunroom with views of the garden. It slept 8 of us comfortably and there is ample linens and fresh white towels. The second floor bathroom is light and spacious with an over-sized garden tub overlooked by a large skylight.

The house has wireless Internet connectivity and a grocery store within walking distance. The home’s central location makes getting to most sightseeing spots easy by car and gives you every opportunity to explore the city. Although, we loved being in the house so much that some sightseeing was forfeited by having dinner in with a glass of wine. Rob, our host was most helpful with all our questions and made our stay most enjoyable.

Immaculate Victorian House in the Heart of San Francisco

Year Purchased: 1996

Why the Owner Chose NoPa

I've always dreamed of restoring an old house. This house was my first home purchase and not bought with vacation rentals in mind. I found it with the help of good friends who knew the the former residents. From the moment I walked in I was in love. It was a find: In the middle of San Francisco, great layout (rare for victorians), original details, high ceilings, two fireplaces, decks and a big yard.

I originally lived there with 2 roommates to pay the mortgage. San Francisco is not cheap and I was just starting out! No longer wanting roommates and having the garden apartment built for myself, I rented the house out full-time to a great couple. By the time they moved out they had 2 1/2 great kids.

It's been a labor of love bringing it back from a bit of neglect. I replaced the windows, flooring and foundation, put in a garage, remodeled the kitchen and bathrooms, landscaped, restored the lathe & plaster walls & moulding and softwood floors. And paint, paint and paint.

I plan on having this house forever. It's a keeper and San Francisco is the place to be.

The Unique Benefits at this House

My best memories of living in this house include going to sleep with a fire in the master bedroom fireplace, having fun dinners in the formal dining room (and a small fire going in that fireplace), gardening on sunny days, having a barbeque on the deck, chatting with the neighbors out on the sidewalk, cooking up new things in the kitchen, and sitting in that huge tub after wet and cold bike rides. I think I take for granted how I can zip off to all parts of the City, either west to the beach or east to downtown.

Owner's Map of NoPa

As a California native, 15-year San Francisco resident and proud "caretaker" of my 1870's Victorian, I am passionate about providing a wonderful travel experience for all visitors.

I was raised in Thousand Oaks, California (a beautiful town outside of Los Angeles), earned my bachelors and MBA degrees in San Diego and moved to San Francisco in 1994 to embark on my career in the blossoming high technology industry.

For fun I've been competing in triathlons for the past ten years and completed my first Ironman distance race in 2004. My favorite travel destinations are Kailua-Kona, HI and Paris, France. My volunteer experiences include teaching computer skills at a local church, caring for rescued golden retrievers, planting trees around SF, and, most recently, providing pro-bono consulting work for non-profit organizations.

Since I live in the completely separate garden-level 1 bedroom apartment I'm able to stay on top of maintaining the home and helping folks out with whatever they may need. Iron or hair dryer suddenly not working? Need help getting on-line or printing boarding passes? Directions & recommendations? Lift to the rental car location? Group photographer? Send or Receive packages? I even lent out cuff links to a Best Man before! These are all things a property management company or absentee owner can't do for you as easily. But I completely respect your privacy and strive to be as invisible as you need me to be.

Finally, I really enjoy doing VRBO! Every interaction I've had has been positive and rewarding. Really wonderful folks rent homes for their travels!

Take Care,
-Rob

    • What a fantastic place to stay in San Francisco. The location is ideal to get in the sights, but also is quiet and has extremely good facilities. The home is stunning and we loved the luxury and attention to detail that this Victorian home had to offer. We loved the hot tub, top notch kitchen and the "home away from home" this place offered. Rob, our host was extremely helpful, friendly and efficient, and made our time here a truly memorable one. This home comes highly reccommended for families or groups wanting to get the best out of San Fran.

    • We stayed here for four nights (although we wish we could have stayed longer). The place was lovely with tasteful furnishings and our young son loved playing in the backyard garden complete with Koi pond. We were within walking distance of Golden Gate park which was great. We will definitely stay in this house again when we visit San Francisco! Rani and Howard Michigan

    • This house is _awesome_. We rented the house for a week for our wedding in Golden Gate Park. The place is so beautiful that we ended up taking many of our pre-wedding photos in the house and the backyard. The place is extremely well stocked, the beds are comfortable, the tv is huge, and it's big enough to accommodate large groups of people. We had a blast! Thanks, Rob :)

    • We had the pleasure of staying at this lovely home in San Francisco over spring break. The location is very convenient to public transit, and we used our "MUNI" passes for the bus every day. The home was comfortable and very clean. We have rented numerous times through VRBO and this was definitely one of the best. Lots of space, lots of help from Rob the owner, and wonderful neighborhood...Starbuck's just down the street! Highly recommend!
