Finca Buen Pais is a rental house set amidst a 55-acre private reserve and art garden, with an infinity edge pool with waterfall, horses, and jungle trails leading to a natural waterfall.
The house is on three levels and offers the best of gracious indoor-outdoor tropical living. On the first level is a spacious living room with a wall of floor-to-ceiling pivoting windows, a dining room, and a fully equipped kitchen. The second floor has two bedrooms and a sitting room which can be used as an additional sleeping area. Perched on the third floor is another bedroom with windows on all four sides and a queen-sized bed. There are two bathrooms and a private, outdoor shower.
A veranda extends around two sides of the house opening onto a covered teak deck with a hammock. Howler monkeys and a wide variety of birds are regularly seen from the veranda. The house features tile or wood floors throughout, with exposed wood beams and posts, and abundant tropical hardwood accents.
The house is perched on a hill, offering commanding views of the pool and rancho, rolling hills and valleys, and the ocean from every room in the house. In addition, it is blessed with regular breezes, making air conditioning unnecessary.
The land is lush with tropical foliage, flowering trees and shrubs, and fruit trees. There is abundant wildlife, including howler monkeys, gautusas, coatimundis, ocelots, jagarundis, deer, armadillo, and peccaries, and there are a wide assortment of colorful birds, including parrots, parakeets, toucans, motmots, manakins, woodpeckers, hummingbirds, and trogans.
The land is bordered on three sides by rivers that have carved deep jungle ravines. Trails lead to a private waterfall with its own swimming hole.
Finca Buen Pais is a 10 minute drive from the undeveloped beach at Manzanillo and only 30 minutes from the popular tourist towns of Mal Pais, Montezuma and Santa Theresa. It is a perfect base for exploring the Southern Nicoya Peninsula, while enjoying the tranquility of a private resort. Horseback riding from your front steps can be arranged.
After a day of exploring the Southern Nicoya Peninsula, enjoy the sunset over the ocean from the rancho or veranda with a cool drink or a mango or coconut picked fresh from the tree.
Experience the best of Costa Rica at Finca Buen Pais.

We spent two weeks at this house. No doubt about how fabulous the property and house are. BEWARE that it is brutal to get to. No paved roads to the house nor to the "beaches" that you'd want to visit. The house is gorgous, but very moldy as it is always open to the elements. This means the linens, etc. The kitchen isn't really well equipped (a few chipped plates and some moldy pots-we had to buy a can opener, etc.) and the only hot water is on demand in the shower. Good luck with the shower. The water would stop every few minutes and you're left standing with soap in your hair for 10 minutes. So - when you're washing dishes with the cold water - it stops as well. There is no grill - which would be an awesome addition to the pool area. The house is very dark at night = not enough lighting to be comfortable and read. If there is a horse, we weren't made aware and didn't see one. Not cushy and not very comfortable. The house if beautiful like a tree house - but lots of stairs to get up to the bedrooms. The view is stunning. The pool is EVERYTHING! It saved our vacation. Caretakers Jonathan & Jeannette were great and very informative. ABSOLUTLEY need an SUV. It's a rugged vacation. Everything you'll want to do is a pretty long and very HARD ride over dirt roads with craters and holes. The road is good to Cobano, but after that . . . There aren't any brochures in the house about What To Do While You're Here - but Jonathan came up with one that helped us to find some good places to eat. We did meet a lot of interesting critters there and local doggies like to come to visit. The deck outside the dining room is the place to hang, tho the view is getting obstructed by a tree. There are no lights outside there - but a ceiling fan keeps a breeze going. To be honest, when we got home, we needed a vacation from our vacation. It's beautiful, but not relaxing, unless you plan to spend all of your time in/at the pool.Recommended for: Adventure seekers.
Owner response: I think the man problem with this guest's stay is that they came during the worst time of the year in Costa Rica -- the heavy rains. We generally do not rent the house during the month of October because the roads are bad and everything is damp (this guest insisted that they were aware of the weather and it wasn't a problem). This is true no matter where you stay -- October is simply a rotten time to vacation in Costa Rica. Getting to beaches and other local attractions is much easier and quicker during the main season (December to June). Everyone, even the locals, complains about how hard things are in the fall. We have new caretakers now who are more on top of things and the kitchen has been restocked. Unfortunately, the old caretaker had not made us aware of things that needed to be replaced. Please contact us if you have any questions -- it is a great place and guests who come during the main season always love it! As I said, we hardly ever rent during the heavy rains.

I was fortunate to experience a wonderful stay this past February for a week at Buen Pais. Ann and Robert were incredible from day one making my reservations and accomidating me. It was easy with their directions to find their property, which is on a wonderul lot of property with one of the best sunset views I have seen in Costa Rica. While their property is relativly close to Cobano the main town with bank, shops etc. and close to the beaches, it feels like you are a world away in paradise, it is very private with plenty of trails for hiking, and a beautiful horse on property and very safe. The villa has a great set up, nice outdoor shower, and has an open feel to it. The pool is very nice, it is perfect for someone trying to get away or a group of people looking for a fun time. I can't wait to go back, and Robert and Ann are very very nice, hospitable, and great to be around too!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 5/6
