WINNER OF THE 2008 TRILLIUM AWARD FOR BEAUTIFICATION AND HISTORICAL PRESERVATION!! Formerly run as a B&B, the Alexander Muir House circa 1840 was built by dry dock owner and ship-builder Alexander Muir near the original Welland Canal of 1829. It is set on a 70'x170' property with an extensive private back garden with mature trees and perennial garden with a patio and covered area to relax on.
This charming clapboard style cottage has a covered front verandah to sit on and enjoy the pretty surroundings and is just a 2 minute walk to the beach, marina, pier, historic carousel (still a nickel per ride), "Theatre in the Port" (dinner theatre), "Treadwell" (a fine dining waterfront restaurant), "The Kilt & Clover Pub", the world famous Henley Regatta Grandstand on Martindale Pond and many other pubs, restaurants and quaint shops. The "Waterfront Trail" can be used for walking, biking and running and goes for many miles along the waterfront.
Port Dalhousie is in the heart of the Niagara Wine Country. Port Dalhousie is also famous for the Henley Regatta. People come from all over the world to row here. It is the largest rowing regatta outside of Henley, England! The grandstand is just a 4 minute walk from our cottage. The famous Beamsville Bench area (often written up in Wine Spectator Magazine) is only 15 minutes away. Also, the quaint town of Jordan only minutes away and boasts a 100 year old wisteria vine. Niagara on the Lake (NOTL)is only 20 minutes away and has been labeled the "prettiest town in Ontario". It has the famous Shaw Theatre and many more wineries, shops and restaurants to visit. Niagara Falls and Casino Niagara are a 15 minute drive from NOTL along the scenic Niagara Parkway with breathtaking views of the Niagara River.
The Alexander Muir cottage is decorated in an "English cottage style" with comfortable earth tones and an eclectic mix of antiques, wicker and other fine furnishings and is fully equipped for your enjoyment (1,850 sq ft). All bedrooms have pillow top mattresses and the finest linens, fluffy towels, and are situated apart from one another for privacy. Two of the bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms and the main bathroom is situated beside the third bedroom. All bathrooms are very clean and fresh with hotel style toiletries. The cottage is equipped with fine china, glassware and cutlery and is set for entertaining. The cottage has large principal rooms and has floor to ceiling windows along the back of the cottage to view the private garden.
The back garden is equipped with lounge chairs and adirondack chairs, a few benches and also has an area on the patio to dine with a market umbrella. At the side of the cottage there is a separate bbq area. The garage has a covered area with adirondack chairs to sit on and enjoy as well.
If you are looking for a holiday that is full of adventure, wine tasting, or to just relax and unwind, this property offers it all. It is so close to all the activity, yet very private with lots of room to relax. If you are looking for a charming place with luxury and style and enjoy a peaceful setting with a beautiful garden and the finer things...this is the place for you!

Your home surpassed our expectations! We loved it - my daughter (11 yrs) staked out her room early and announced that it would be her room every year - apparently she has made our future vacation plans already! Hope you enjoy our donations to your already well stocked abode - a waffle iron - recipe written in your recipe book and a game for your game cupboard (Songburst)...Hope to come back again!Did you find this review helpful? Shelley thanks so much for all the conveniences of home here. It's a lovely home and wonderful yard. Perfect location! Couldn't ask for a better place for our stay while attending a family reunion out here. Treadwell was a fabulous restaurant for our 25th wedding anniversary. Thanks again!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/1

Why the Owner Chose Saint Catharines:
We bought the historic Alexander Muir House when we moved back from England. We lived there for 3 years and loved it. We found that this cottage reminded of us of England. We chose also, to decorate it in the "english cottage" style. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Our cottate is absolutely in the middle of Niagara's Wine District! There is amazing golf courses nearby, fabulous wineries and quaint towns (Niagara on the Lake, Jordan, Beamsville, Grimsby) and lots of history from the war of 1812. Also, it is great to be in such a great beach location in charming Port Dalhousie. It really offers a lot for adults, children and teens...there is something for everyone! We also love the fact that you can walk everywhere and it has a real "neighbourhood" feel to it. The people are very friendly everywhere you go!
