Along the Via Regina, between Argegno and the Punta Balbianello, at the foot of Monte Costone, is the picturesque little village of Colonno which is reflected in the waters of the lake. This area is called "Zoca de l'oli", that is the "oil basin", because the waters of the lake are usually as smooth as oil.
The village has ancient origins. In medieval times it was part of the Parish of the Isola Comacina, and so it shared the same fate as the island in the long war between Como and Milan. Once it was inhabited by fishermen and farmers.
It has conserved a typically medieval architectural structure, with each house leaning against the next one. Behind the village, on the slopes of the mountain one can see the terracing and walls built in the past to enable the cultivation of the "fragrant herbs", which the inhabitants would sell along with fish and fresh dairy products to peddlers who went around the province with a basket on their backs.
Colonno is a pedestrian zone; various parking areas are available along the road and a large plaza close to the church is just 50 meters away from La Cà de sass.
"La cà de sass" (The stone house) is so called because it's build with stone and for many years it was the residence of the local bricklayers.
Ideal central location to visit the surrounding area. From the apartment you can enjoy a breathtaking lake and mountains view. The apartment is the perfect place for a lifestyle vacation with a strong local touch of Italian culture.
Everything here is new and has been chosen with great care, there are teak floors in the living area and Italian tiles in the bathroom. The furnishings, appliances, all linens and dinnerware are also brand new.
The simple but tasteful furniture accommodates all tastes and offers our guests everything they need for a comfortable holiday, short break and business trip to Como, Milan or Switzerland.
The apartment is also ideal for those who do not want to be troubled with driving in Italy. The local bus stops directly near the apartment. There is also a public bus service from Milan Malpensa airport and Como is also well served by the international train service.
We can also offer an excellent English speaking taxi driver service, which is available on request. Switzerland is also a short drive away, 45 minutes by car, where you can find the City of Lugano, Campione D'Italia, with it's famous "Casino" and lovely lake front walk. The famous 'Jet Set' resort of St. Moritz is a two hour drive away.
Finally the apartment is along the Greenway o the lake Como: a pedestrian road from Colonno village, to Villa Balbianello, to Cadenabbia and Griante. 13 km going through old villages, crossing the site of the ancients, see church, monuments and villas, touching lake view, but also restaurant, bar, shop, etc.

Hello, my name is Gloria. I am a young architect. I am the owner of the house of Colonno. My family has owned this house for generations: we are from Colonno. It 'a magical place to experience the atmosphere of the lake. I have completely renovated in 2008, providing it with every comfort and with my taste, next to more modern minimalist design, I hope to have it transformed into a cozy nest but bright! I'll be waiting!
Why the Owner Chose Colonno
In this house you can feel the atmosphere of Lake Como. E 'in the heart of the ancient village and the few steps that go to reach the apartment from the parking lot, will be sufficient to find an oasis of peace and silence, in full sun all day, with the blue lake in the windows.
From Colonno will be easy to walk to the other riparian countries, through a fascinating historical journey. If instead you want to reach all famous as Menaggio and Bellagio, will be easy to take the car or the bus that will take you there in minutes. Who's Bench has fallen in love, and often came back: I hope you will like it, too!

My wife and I stayed at this apartment in April 2011. The apartment had lovely views out over Colonno and Lake Como. The apartment was clean, spacious and as described on the website. It provided a convenient stepping off place for visiting other towns on the lake. There is limited shopping in Colonno, although the mini mart (open only in the mornings) stocks the basics to keep you going. The nearest supermarket is 3.5km away in Lenno. The Greenway walk, which runs through Colonno, is a wonderful way to explore some of the villages which sit on the edge of the lake. A regular bus service connects Colonno with other towns. Gloria, the owner of the apartment, was always prompt in answering emails and was helpful with information about trains and buses from Milan and Como.We found the locals to be a very friendly and generous community. We would recommend a day on the ferries exploring the lake and also a ride on the funicular (cable raliway) from Como to Brunate where you can peer across the lake into Switzerland! If you are in the Lake Como area in Spring a visit to Villa Carlotta is not to be missed - the flowers on display are stunning.
