We enjoyed the whole house (canopy and crown) during 3 weeks. The owner has prepared a clean and very well organized house. They were attentive to our stay by their discretion and their availability. The garden has been wonderful for relaxing under the sun. The location allowed all attractions by using public transport. The online description of the house corresponds to the reality. If you want to spend a pleasant stay in order to enjoy all the amazing recreations in Vancouver, We recommend this property to everybody. In brief, if we plan to move again from France to British columbia in the next years, first we will contact the owners to be sure to enjoy this pleasant house yet.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, adventure seekers.
Owner response: We are so happy that you enjoyed our house and had everything to make your extended 3 week stay comfortable for your large family group. It was nice to see you enjoying so much time in our garden, which we also think is fantastic! I hope we do have the pleasure of hosting you again! Regards, Camille, Alex, Gabriel, Chloe and Claire

The location was good as was the cleanliness. The neighborhood was not great but we never felt unsafe. We have 2 adults and 4 kids and rented the Crown. I realize this comes with renting a home with multiple levels but the floors were creaky and sounds easily heard among levels. I felt like we had to tip toe in our own place so not to disturb the rest of the rental. Also the kitchen was very poorly stocked. Few cooking pots, pans and utensils. The kitchen for all intensive purposes was bare. No dish soap or soap for the dishwasher. We have rented many VRBOs and this was our least favorite.Owner response: Thank you for your honest comments, Brian and Corinne. It is unfortunate that you were less than satisfied with your stay in the Crown. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do to change the sensitive ears of the guests that were on the main floor during your stay. We do not normally find noise to be an issue and we live in the basement suite ourselves. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule and we are sorry that your stay was made uncomfortable because of it. As far as the kitchen is concerned, that is something I can work on! Often kitchen implements migrate between floors when the whole house is rented and we encourage our guests to let us know what is needed if anything is missing. During your stay I was notified of your need for a large pot and large bowls and I provided both. Our storage area is fully stocked with dish soap and soap for the dishwasher and I would have been happy to restock any item that was mentioned to me during your stay. One of the many benefits of living on site is that I am always available to address any questions or concerns our guests may have. You need only knock or call! We count on feedback from our current guests to help us improve the experience of our vacation rental for future guests. Based on your comments, I have chatted with my housekeeper regarding the importance of being diligent regarding the restocking of soaps, etc. We also have a list of new kitchen supplies that will be purchased so that the migration of pots, pans, utensils, etc. is not an issue in the future. Kindest Regards, Camille

Just recently returned from our stay at the Cottonwood Crown and could not have been happier with our choice. I spent months looking for rentals that would accommodate our needs for a weeks long vacation. Our party consisted of 4 adults and 3 young children (ages 19 months, 22 months and 4 years old) and we were in town for 7 days for a medical conference that our husbands attended. It was very difficult to find accommodations that included a yard, cribs, fantastic parks within walking distance, and was also close to downtown. I can attest that the neighborhood is safe. The road was mostly occupied by bicycles and we went on several walks throughout the day and never felt unsafe. While researching places to stay, I also had to stay within a budget and can honestly say I was not able to find another rental that included the amenities we required without charging additional fees (i.e., many rentals charged children as adults, several did not include free parking, etc). The price was exceptional, the neighborhood is charming and the house reflects the character of the community. Our children enjoyed watching the seagulls from the balcony and listening to their songs daily. I would recommend this rental home for anyone traveling with families, couples looking to get away but still be close to downtown and anyone else that wants to experience an atmosphere that is welcoming and fun. Rental was in complete working order, very clean, and held modern features while still capturing the old charm. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay with you:)Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thank you so much for your gracious comments, Angela! We are so happy that your stay was a success. As parents of young children ourselves, we know how hard it can be to find comfortable accommodations while travelling, and we are so pleased we have been successful in providing a home that made you feel so comfortable in your travels! We, too, love how many parks are within walking distance, and the proximity of the ocean certainly makes our resident seagulls feel at home as well! It was lovely to meet you during your stay, and we hope to see you again should your travels ever bring you back this way! Kindest Regards, Camille, Alex, Gabriel, Chloe and Claire

I live here, I'm looking for a rental while we renovate our house. I'm flabbergasted that a house in this area would be trying to rent for this much. I even drove by to double check. Sure the areas being slowly re-gentrified so the prostitutes and drug addicts have to find a new home, but meanwhile this area is still incredibly scary and run down. I think this ad is ridiculously misleading to future guests of our city.Owner response: Yes, please do Google the location! We have never done anything to hide the location of this home. This part of Strathcona is located on the industrial edge of Vancouver and is also close to East Hastings, which is, unfortunately, better known for its homeless population than its many missions and shelters that strive to help those less fortunate than ourselves. The many guests who have stayed with us have enjoyed the warm and welcoming atmosphere that Cottonwood provides, as well as discovering all of the charms that this neighbourhood has to offer. We are conveniently located within easy walking distance of Chinatown and the vibrant Commercial Drive area, and are only a 30-40 minute walk from downtown. Strathcona is the oldest neighbourhood in Vancouver and full of beautiful heritage homes and an amazing sense of community. We speak from experience as we live in the basement suite of this house with our three young children (a 3 year old and 7 month old twins). The fact that we have chosen to stay in this small apartment with 3 children when we could have moved to a larger property located elsewhere in the city, is a testament to how much we love this neighbourhood and how safe we feel here. I do not hesitate to take my children for evening walks, and have never felt threatened or scared in any way. In fact, my son's daycare is located in the heart of the East Hastings area I walk him there and back every day with my two babies in tow. That being said, we invite you to "take a risk" and discover for yourself everything that Cottonwood and Strathcona has to offer! Warmest Regards, Camille, Alex, Gabriel, Chloe and Claire

Although we did not stay at this property, I had to take a moment to commend the owners on their prompt response time and follow-up with my inquiries. Very often, phone calls and emails are not given the courtesy of a response; however, Camille was prompt , courteous and respectful. Even though we did not stay here, it was a pleasure dealing with Camille and it was an overall pleasant and professional experience. I would definitely pickup the phone or email Camille, because I know that I would actually be dealing with people who understand customer service.Did you find this review helpful? Dear Camille and Alex, Many many many (times a thousand) thanks for letting us stay in this lovely abode! DeCadence a capella had a blast performing and eating family meals and picnics all around Vancouver. There are great rehearsal spaces in your house (in case you didn't know).everything about this house is beautiful! ALSO, WHY DON'T I LIVE HERE!?:-) We visited lots of tourist sites in Vancouver as well as had a concert at University of BC; we made late night runs to the AWESOME ice cream place around the corner; we hit up a club in the city; we took a hike at le TreeTop Adventure; we walked really, really far and jumped really, really high and had loads and loads of fun, and we couldn't have asked for a better place to come home to at night!!!!!!!! I hope we didn't make too much of a ruckus (singers tend to be loud)?! Thanks so much for everything! With love from Berkeley, California, Hannah & DeCadence a cappella (3/26/2011)Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers.

Thank-you, Alex and Camille, for opening up your house to us. We had the nicest time. This is a great walking neighborhood. The walk to Chinatown was "doable" and the food at Hons was worth it! The house was inviting as well as the hosts! Bev, Marysville, Washington.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

First; the owners are exceptional! Beyond helpful, professional and quick to respond. Though they live on the premises, you would NEVER know they were there! The home feels very safe and cozy. It has a character and warmth that's lacking in motels and hotels. It felt like I was at my own home and all the amenities were there and then some! The neighborhood was so residential and quiet, that it was hard to believe that we could EASILY walk to much of the downtown area. The bus system or taxis were easy to understand and use too. I didn't even bother to drive my car anywhere. House is VERY clean and well maintained. Backyard is beautiful. Photos are accurate, but don't quite do the place justice. Beds are very comfy and the inside temperature was easy to adjust; so we were never too hot or too cold. I would absolutely recommend this place to family and friends! I plan to rent this place again in the near-future. As for attractions, etc.; there are SO MANY things to do and see, it's hard to choose. Just about anything you want to do is easy to get to. There are various ethnic restaurants within walking distance. I definately say you must go to La Casa Gelato, which is less than 2 blocks from the house. It is an ice cream, sorbet, fro-yo, gelato shop with maybe 100 flavors. They let you have lots of free samples too. You can get pizza, Indian and Asian food delivered to the house. Or walk to China Town and eat in at Hon's. Excellent food at a reasonable price. If you like to bicycle, this house is the perfect place to stay. The neighborhood and beyond have more bicyclists than I've ever seen, yet they are all respectful of pedestrians; as are the 4-wheel vehicles. Hard to believe there is so much activity in the area, because it's very very quiet and serene. BTW: I had NEVER met the owners or stayed here before; yet I felt instantly at ease and felt like I was staying with my favorite relatives. Alex even went out and swept snow off my car that had accumulated the night before. And he shoveled the porch and sidewalk to my car. I've rented a number or vacation rentals and this one rates in my Top 5! I'll be back for sure!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car, adventure seekers.
Owner response: It was a pleasure having you and your friends here, Shelly! We are so glad that you felt so at home. And...FYI...the gelato shop has 218 flavours! And is dangerously close.... Fond Regards, Camille and Alex

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2010
About the owner: We recently decided to move to the Vancouver area in order to enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery, idyllic green spaces, and cosmopolitan city feel. We have both enjoyed extensive domestic and international travel and one of the things we love about being in a new place is getting to know the locals and discovering the hidden gems an area has to offer. We have also both stayed in numerous self-catering vacation rentals and it is now our pleasure to have a beautiful heritage home to share with fellow travelers.
Why the Owner Chose Strathcona:
We were looking for something in the area of Strathcona because we have family in the area and had already fallen in love with the character of this neighborhood after our first visit. It has such a unique charm and the people are so down to earth that it only takes one trip to one of the numerous unique corner stores to feel instantly at home. Not to mention the amazing charm and character of this beautiful heritage home!
The Unique Benefits at this House:
- Great access to all the best parts of Vancouver, including downtown.
- Great old character home renovated to excellent standards with large back garden
- Child and pet friendly and safe (fenced in back yard and even some childrens toys!)
- Helpful managers living on site; not at all invasive, but always on call
