Maine the Way It Used To Be

I was born in Maine (too many years ago to discuss!) so I know this to be true, the Schoodic Surf Cottage is Maine the way it used to be. As others have said, the photos do not do this cottage and its location justice. The house is larger than it appears (1,800 sq. feet), this was on the internet information, but I did not pay attention, so I was pleasantly surprised. I loved the décor. It has a cottage feel, but includes many personal touches that make you feel right at home. My family owns vacation property, so I understand how hard the owners have worked. I also know they do a great job keeping the home clean. Yes, clean! You just never know when renting, do you? The phone numbers to the owner, caretaker and rental agent are posted where you feel you really could call if there was anything wrong. The owner has even put together a great book about the area to help with day trip decisions. Prospect Harbor is small (no red lights), but the people are friendly. There is a deli just down the street and a cute library with a lovely view. The next town, Winter Harbor has a couple restaurants, art galleries and a neat 5&10. Also, an IGA if you need supplies. Ellsworth is only 30 minutes away and has everything from McDonalds, Super Wal-Mart and a cute downtown with good restaurants. The beautiful Schoodic Point portion of Acadia National Park is only five miles from the cottage. Bar Harbor is about 45 minutes away. Now for the best part - the ocean view is amazing. The rocks are real Maine pink granite. Yes, large granite rocks, not pebbles or sand, and real deep water Atlantic Ocean, not that Maine mud at low tide. It’s the real thing! Waves crashing and everything. Lobster buoys, lobster boats and life-altering sunrises (sleep with the shades to the ocean up). There are Adirondack chairs and even a hammock. I don’t know if you can get a view like this anywhere else. If so, I have yet to find it.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

We've been coming to Downeast Maine for several years and love it (hope to retire here), but this is the first rental home we wanted to come back to. We've already booked for next year. The location is beautiful. The house is in a quiet development in woods adjacent to the Prospect Harbor Lighthouse. As others have said, the pictures on this site don't do justice. It's a perfect Cape with an open layout (and gorgeous pine floors) downstairs and a well-done dormer'd two bedroom and bath space upstairs. The furniture is very nice, and the owners have supplied decent linens and dishware (not all of them do) as well as good cookware. WiFi made being up here for two weeks manageable work-wise, and we especially appreciated the ability to use the no-charge land line (cell service is not good). The best part, though, is the backyard ... lovely garden beds and stairs that lead to huge pink granite boulders that you can walk at low tide. No mud flats here! We arrived just before Hurricane Irene, and watching the pitch pines sway in the wind over the rocks was an amazing experience. The owners and their property manager are terrific. Both Kent and Lynell checked in before, during, and after the storm, and Wendy is as responsive as anyone we've ever dealt with. This place is a treasure. Be sure to check out the Fisherman's Inn in Winter Harbor, Le Domaine in Hancock, Jordan's Snack Bar in Ellsworth, and the Prospect Harbor Farmers Market.Did you find this review helpful? Schoodic Surf Cottage is a charming cape nestled on a wooded lot. The best part of each day was sipping coffee in the cozy, yet spacious master bedroom while watching the sun rise each morning. Everything in the cottage is excellent: the cleanliness, the furniture, the decorating scheme, the well-organized kitchen. The owner has thoughtfully provided a notebook detailing where everything needed is located in the house as well as activities and attractions in the area. Vacationers can choose whether to simply sit by the ocean and enjoy the sounds of the sea, or use Schoodic Surf as their home base while exploring Downeast Maine. This house is a treasure!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+.

My husband and I spent a long weekend here with two friends and we definitely recommend the house! I actually thought it was bigger than the pictures appear, it was neat, clean, private, and an overall wonderful experience. The house comes stocked with anything you may need, including games, dvd's, and plenty of kitchen utinsels and appliances. It was so peaceful with wonderful views of Prospect Harbor, very close to Winter Harbor, and a beautiful drive to Bar Harbor and Acadia. We highly recommend the experience!Recommended for: Families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway.

If you need to recharge, this is definitely the place to do it. The minute we all got out of the car the smell of the ocean and balsam immediately overcame us all. This was truly a vacation of relaxing and taking in the beauty of nature. The best two things about this place were the awe-inspiring sunsets and sunrises. Anything that you could possibly need is right at your fingertips--thanks to the thoughtfulness of the homeowners. We also enjoyed the quaintness of the lobster villages, eclectic shops, and fabulous eateries. Truly a great escape!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

As soon as we walked into the home we knew we had rented the right home. It was so clean and looked like it was professionally decorated, had everything you could need for your weeks stay. What is super is that the owners made a manuel of local things to do with lists of places to eat and places to go and a place to add your own do's and don'ts. They also called us to check that everything was good. If you want privacy and hear the ocean from your window in luxury bedding then this is the place to go. It was everything we were looking for in Maine a quiet local town down east where we could feel welcome. It was like going home without the kids. If you wanted a vacation with the kids this would be great it has really nice bedrooms with wonderful linens and the bathrooms and laundry was nice there is pleanty of room for the whole family or a couple on a romantic getaway like us. Thank you so much for sharing your homeRecommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Incredible vacation! Okay, for those of you who are out there looking at websites trying to figure out if the pictures are "better" than what you will find when you arrive--rest assured! In this case, the pictures don't do this beautiful home justice. We arrived at 2 a.m. from New York (adults and kids) holding our breath and were relieved to find a house on a beautiful rocky beach on the Atlantic (not some back cove) that shares a view with a real working Maine Lighthouse. As soon as we pulled up the private driveway, we could hear the waves. In fact, each night we went to sleep with the sounds of the surf on the rocks. Both upstairs bedrooms have a wonderful ocean views, as does the dining room, kitchen and living room. One of the bedrooms has two queens on opposite walls--great for a family with smaller children. It is very private and even has a two car garage, outdoor lobster cooker, adirondack chairs overlooking the private rocky beach and the kids favorite--a hammock! The decor is extremely well done--Pottery Barn meets cottage garden--pine floors--plasma tvs--nice sound system. The owner even called us the first day to give us some tips and to make sure everything was okay. Unlike some other rental houses--this has everything you need---and no personal items taking up precious closet space. In fact, it felt more like a nice hotel. My husband kayaked right off the beach and purchased lobsters from one of the many boats in front of the cottage. On the last day there--we actually had a seal emerge right in front of our house. We are booking again for next year. Again, if you are looking for an authentic (non tourist) Maine experience...you won't be disappointed. Wendy was also great--very thorough and organized.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

No sleeping pills were needed. The crashing sounds of waves hitting the back-yard granite boulders of our vacation cottage was all the sleep aid needed in the heart of the “Land of Lobsters,” to wit, the Schoodic Peninsula in Downeast Maine. The setting was specifically “Schoodic Surf Cottage,” a two-story, three bedroom rental that sits directly over the ocean’s “Downeast” coast nestled between three harbors, Prospect, Winter and Corea located about 30 miles from the more well-known Bar Harbor. To land-locked Tennesseans, the setting was not only therapeutic and picturesque, but educational in touring America’s last operational sardine processing plant, and the experience buying fresh-caught lobsters ($7 a pound) straight off the boats. As land-lubbers, we realized we had not previously experienced the spectacular fresh succulent taste of truly fresh lobster, until you’ve cooked them on the cottages’ outdoor patio over a Bunsen burner in a pot of boiling sea water straight out the ocean. One of the truly most “blessed” experiences came when the chickadees would fly up and softly land on our raised cupped hands, and eat their morning meal of bird seed. This was almost “a spiritual” experience to be this attuned to Mother Nature there by the seaside. How exciting was the total experience? We’re booked to go back to Schoodic Surf Cottage on the Schoodic Peninsula in the fall. And it’s a truly affordable cottage, that is sparkling clean, complete with a full kitchen and breath-taking views of the cascading ocean waves and fleet of working lobster boats.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
