Casa de la Espiga... Intimate Gardens and Sunset Views... Centro Histórico Step behind these understated walls and experience a different place in time. Conveniently located in the heart of the Centro Histórico Theater District, just a three minute walk from the town's main plaza, lies one of San Miguel's authentic Spanish Colonial gems. Dating back to 1717 AD, this unique home has been lovingly restored well beyond its original grandeur by its current owners . . . one of whom is an internationally renowned interior designer.
For fifty years prior, Casa de la Espiga was a local bakery . . . hence its name which translates to: House of the Grain Flower. Once inside, two individual colonnaded courtyards with lush gardens, original stone walls, graceful arches, and trickling fountains gently lead you toward the interior rooms, designed to afford the ultimate in indoor/outdoor living reminiscent of this home's colonial past.
Relax, dine, and entertain your guests in these private patios taking full advantage of the nearly perfect climate. Or if you prefer, settle cozily indoors in the elegant yet comfortable sala in front of the hand-carved fireplace, or take your meals in the formal dining room crowned by a splendid cupola. Two well-appointed, comfortably spacious first floor bedrooms, one with a king bed and one with a queen, are accessible from the gardens as well.
This exceptional home has been tastefully furnished throughout with antiques and Mexican handicrafts. The owner's personal collection of original art and artifacts, many from the treasure trove of San Miguel's talented artists, as well as from their own extensive travels, is a visual feast.
Colorful Mexican tiles line the walls of the large, fully-equipped kitchen, where indigenous ceramics and eclectic market paintings are whimsically displayed. The newly completed Moroccan-inspired guest suite (queen bed) with private sitting room, kitchenette, and mosaic-tiled bath is stunning, and definitely 'one-of-a-kind' in San Miguel. This guest suite is ALWAYS included with the main house rental for privacy and convenience.
The more rustic-styled separate art studio can double as a fourth bedroom as it has a double futon and large cemento pulido bath.
Both of these rooms open out onto the expansive sun-drenched roof terraces, with views of the town's stunning skyline and mountain sunsets. All bedrooms have private en suite baths, fine linens, and down/feather comforters and pillows. Cable television, surround sound, and a library of books, videos, and CD's are provided for your enjoyment.
Casa de la Espiga has a wonderful full-time staff who utterly exude the 'warmth of Mexico'. Tactfully unobtrusive, 'Josefina' is there to maintain the household and look after your every need. Best of all, her memorable Mexican recipes rival those of any restaurant in San Miguel . . . and she LOVES to cook . . . a real 'Like Water for Chocolate' experience! Our 'house boy' tends to the garden and outdoor spaces and will cheerfully help out wherever he is needed. Their job is to make sure that you feel pampered throughout your entire stay.
Casa de la Espiga is not just a home . . . it is an experience! |
