Casa de la Espiga... Intimate Gardens and Sunset Views... Centro Histórico

Step behind these understated walls and experience a different place in time. Conveniently located in the heart of the Centro Histórico Theater District, just a three minute walk from the town's main plaza, lies one of San Miguel's authentic Spanish Colonial gems. Dating back to 1717 AD, this unique home has been lovingly restored well beyond its original grandeur by its current owners . . . one of whom is an internationally renowned interior designer.

For fifty years prior, Casa de la Espiga was a local bakery . . . hence its name which translates to: House of the Grain Flower.

Once inside, two individual colonnaded courtyards with lush gardens, original stone walls, graceful arches, and trickling fountains gently lead you toward the interior rooms, designed to afford the ultimate in indoor/outdoor living reminiscent of this home's colonial past.

Relax, dine, and entertain your guests in these private patios taking full advantage of the nearly perfect climate. Or if you prefer, settle cozily indoors in the elegant yet comfortable sala in front of the hand-carved fireplace, or take your meals in the formal dining room crowned by a splendid cupola. Two well-appointed, comfortably spacious first floor bedrooms, one with a king bed and one with a queen, are accessible from the gardens as well.

This exceptional home has been tastefully furnished throughout with antiques and Mexican handicrafts. The owner's personal collection of original art and artifacts, many from the treasure trove of San Miguel's talented artists, as well as from their own extensive travels, is a visual feast.

Colorful Mexican tiles line the walls of the large, fully-equipped kitchen, where indigenous ceramics and eclectic market paintings are whimsically displayed.

The newly completed Moroccan-inspired guest suite (queen bed) with private sitting room, kitchenette, and mosaic-tiled bath is stunning, and definitely 'one-of-a-kind' in San Miguel. This guest suite is ALWAYS included with the main house rental for privacy and convenience.

The more rustic-styled separate art studio can double as a fourth bedroom as it has a double futon and large cemento pulido bath.

Both of these rooms open out onto the expansive sun-drenched roof terraces, with views of the town's stunning skyline and mountain sunsets. All bedrooms have private en suite baths, fine linens, and down/feather comforters and pillows. Cable television, surround sound, and a library of books, videos, and CD's are provided for your enjoyment.

Casa de la Espiga has a wonderful full-time staff who utterly exude the 'warmth of Mexico'. Tactfully unobtrusive, 'Josefina' is there to maintain the household and look after your every need. Best of all, her memorable Mexican recipes rival those of any restaurant in San Miguel . . . and she LOVES to cook . . . a real 'Like Water for Chocolate' experience! Our 'house boy' tends to the garden and outdoor spaces and will cheerfully help out wherever he is needed. Their job is to make sure that you feel pampered throughout your entire stay.

Casa de la Espiga is not just a home . . . it is an experience!

When you step through the doors to either this amazing house, you step from a noisy cobblestoned street in a busy colonial Mexican town into a world of romance and quiet beauty. The thick stone walls embrace you and the gracefully arched doorways lead you from one gracious and gorgeously decorated room into the next. There are so many intriguing and inviting rooms and seating areas throughout Casa Espiga that the only stress you could possibly feel is the need to enjoy each one of them. Two courtyards grace each half of the casa and they are lush with flowers and vegetation and adorned with fountains. The rooms are both showcases and comfortable places to relax, read and converse. But the showstopper of the house is reached by one of several staircases leading to the roof. Morning, high noon or night, the roof is a an open air sanctuary with outstanding views which continually offer interchanging views of domed cathedrals, adjoining rooftops, vistas across the city off to the hills and skies shifting from deep daytime blues to orange and purple rainbows at sunset. As wonderful as the house with its chains of luxurious rooms is, the roof is the absolute showstopper. Casa Espiga is delightful, but Josefina is a true delight. She arrives each morning and could not be more charming. Take full advantage of her willingness to cook. She is an outstanding cook. Her Sopa Azteca is unbelievably delicious and the Chili Rellenos are unparalleled. She is a tremendously helpful resource. Casa Espiga is not an appropriate place for families with small children or old and infirm people. There are many steps and elevation changes which could be challenging for either group. It is amazing for families with older or adult children and for groups of friends. Casa Espiga is a fantastic location for entertaining with plenty of spaces for enjoying the company of each other and also for moments of privacy.

We travel around the world renting a villa or house frequently but this house was one of the best of all. It is beautiful every single corner, luxurious and spacious. What we like the most is the authentic feel, very tastefully restored. You can walk to everywhere, nice shops, restaurants, cafes and the famous market in town. There were entertainment like concert or international dance show almost every night, so you never get bored. My mother, who is 72 years old, took a cooking class at Sazon. She went to the market with chef and learned some authentic Mexican dishes like Azteca soup. She enjoyed so much!! The communication with the owner, Timothy was so smooth. I didn't need to worry about anything. Who wants to get stressed out waiting the response when you go to the vacation? He is the most responsible owner we ever communicate with and I really appreciate. Josefina, house staff was so sweet. She cooked dinner for us one night, which was wonderful. Thank you so much for the beautiful experience and we can't wait to go back.

Imagine our delight when we opened the door to the courtyard of Casa de la Espiga. We were entering a world of beautifully decorated rooms, courtyards full of plants and fountains and extensive roof gardens--a healing place that was difficult to leave each day to go out and explore San Miguel de Allende. I suppose one always takes a chance when renting a vacation villa in another country, but this was a chance well taken. The Spanish Colonial architecture with modern updates, the location of multiple bedrooms which maximized privacy for all and the fully equipped kitchen made our stay very comfortable. The gem of it all was the wonderfully warm Josifina who was a total delight-friendly, helpful and a talented cook.

I had the pleasure of staying in Casa de ls Espiga at the beginning of '12 and it was an absolutely divine experience. I have rented several homes in SMA and stayed in some of the nicer bed and breakfasts and this house offers the advantages of each. Starting with location, the house is located in the center of town just a few blocks downhill from the Jardin. You really can't get any closer to the town center than this. Once inside the property's walls, however, you feel as if you are secluded in a courtyard oasis of floral and stone delights. The owners (who were very easy to deal with and quite accommodating on short notice) have taken every effort to tastefully decorate and light every nook of this fine property and you could pass several days just getting to know all of its unique spaces. Another plus is that all rooms/sleeping quarters are separated. This makes for a quiet retreat and is ideal for groups of people who want privacy in a shared residence. A property in SMA is not complete without a terrace and this house offers a breathtaking one that spans the entire width of the property. One of my favorite features of the property was the massive fireplace in the regal living room that operates by remote control. This was perfect for the chilly SMA winter nights. All in all, I can not recommend this property enough to people looking for a perfect colonial Mexico experience. My only feedback to the owners was that they should get an ipod adapter for their stereo system. That shows you how little was wrong with this property! All in all, a five-star property and rental experience.

Perfectly located, unparalleled ambiance, lovingly decorated, with wonderful house staff - a stay here is like spending your vacation in a museum - only better! We recently returned from a wonderful week in San Miguel, and one of the best pieces of that stay was this beautiful home. It is nearly impossible to describe or forget. It would be possible to just stay in the house for an entire week and not fully take in all it has to offer. Beautiful decor, many outside, magical spaces to soak in and enjoy, captivating views of the city from the rooftop. It is an easy 5 minute walk to the Jardin. Josephina, who cares for the house and it's guests is a wonderful cook as well as extremely attentive to any requests or needs. I will always dream of returning here one day soon. It is marvelous, truly.
