This renovated two-story, 1940s ranch house (with separate one-story guesthouse) lies in a pocket wine valley, surrounded by a classic Sonoma County landscape of vines, woods and sloping hills. It’s the perfect place to lead The Life Unhurried, and yet only 5 minutes away from Calistoga's fine restaurants and spas.
The house, with a river-stone chimney that evokes the look of grand national park lodges, nestles under a 200-year-old live oak, surrounded by 15 acres of vines– merlot, cabernet franc, syrah and voignier. (Rancho Viña’s owners sell the grapes to boutique wineries and plan to soon begin crushing them on their own.)
Mature apple trees stand in several spots, and ambling off to pick some fresh fruit provides a perfect excuse for strolls around this 60-acre property. Beyond the vines, Rancho Viña’s fertile bench land slopes across Franz Creek and up a timbered knoll. The property is rimmed by cedar, oak, fir and manzanita-cloaked rises – the smell of the cedar evokes fond school-kid memories of freshly sharpened pencils! The landscaping’s new: A cream-colored concrete deck, edged with bushes, grass and ornamental trees, fans out from the ranch house’s veranda and takes in a sweeping vineyard view. People love to sit there after sunset to watch the waning light of day and enjoy the cool of evening. Off the living room, a tiled deck looks out to the new swimming pool, lawn and bocce ball court, all bordered by beds of rosemary, lilac and lavender.
If you’re looking for a Spartan retreat, Rancho Viña will frustrate you. It’s said that bodies dropping onto the comforter-swathed queen beds here are asleep before they even land. In the living room, seductively comfortable leather-clad chairs and suede sofa induce long, lazy conversations. The room’s armoire-housed TV, fireplace and Asian-influenced furniture adjoin a tile-floored dining area with an 8-place cherry wood table. Mellow Sonoma sunlight streams in to brighten the space through two French doors. The tile-paved kitchen has a soothing green and white color scheme and stainless steel appliances. You can see the front deck, willow trees, great oak and vineyard from it. This fully equipped space has a nice artisan touch: The grape leaf-themed pot and pan holder above the counter is made of hand-wrought iron. The bathroom’s stunning glass brick shower enclosure has a wonderful Art Deco feel. Its closet holds a washer/dryer combo, and there are tons of space for towels and toiletries. Both bedrooms feature Berber carpets. The master has ebony furniture and three tall windows looking out to the vineyard and hillside trees, while the guest bedroom has an armoire and rosewood furniture. It overlooks the pool, lawn and bocce court. In the guest cottage you’ll enjoy a screened porch, perfect for early morning hang-outs. Its bedroom has extensive closet space, while the kitchen, dining nook and living room all open to one another, with views to the pool and oak. The plush sofa opens into a bed.
