Jamaica Vacation Staffed Rental Villa Hikaru at Treasure Beach
- Minimum stay:4 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
This unspoiled area is one of the few fisherman's villages that welcomes tourist -- not a tourist area that tolerates fishermen.
Our four-bedroom beachfront villa includes a 50-foot lap pool, private tennis and croquet courts, and a wonderful cook-housekeeper.
You can walk deserted beaches, or snorkel, body-surf, or fish. You can photograph and share the lives of our fishermen neighbors; or you can enjoy the privacy of an acre-plus lot, shielded by trees and flowers.
Privacy: We're in a fishing village, but shielded by heavy plantings on an acre and a quarter. And you even pick your own tropical fruit! Our village neighbors will welcome you if you choose to visit, but will not intrude. Watch for returning fishing boats from our patio, then walk 300 yards to the harbor to watch fish weighed and sold -- and bring some home! Or walk to the west over a series of all-but-deserted beaches, half-mile scallops of sandy beach separated by reef spurs you can climb over or wade over in reef shoes.
We allow two tradespeople -- a basket maker and wood carver -- to come into the back yard to show their wares. Miss Vanessa will tell you they're there; it you say no thanks, they'll pack up and leave.
You can walk a hundred yards down our lane, if you'd like, to learn to play grown-up dominoes at a neighbor's bar.
Touristic things: Our groundskeeper leads a walk into the hills behind us, pointing out birds and orchids.
You can drive to Black River, or hire a local boatman, to see the historic slave-trading block, visit the colorful local outdoor market, or -- best of all -- go up the river a few miles, through mangrove forests and open marshlands occupied by colorful birds and crocodiles. On the way home, stop for lunch at an unusual restaurant up on poles at Pelican Reef.
The night sky and views : With almost no light pollution, the stars are brilliant. Go for a midnight dip in the pool, but once there turn the pool lights off to enjoy the magnificent sky. Only one Dipper at a time to the north; the Southern Cross rising over the ocean during the night.
Our wide patio catches on onshore breeze most of the day, and gives you a panoramic view of the Caribbean at your doorstep so wide you'll have to turn your head to take it all in.
All this while Miss Vanessa and Miss Roxann keep house for you, shop and prepare and serve all meals, and make it a very special vacation.

Hikaru is a vacation destination for the inner adventurer in all of us waiting to escape. Even though the option to swim in the pool or the ocean or just lie in the sun is ever-present, discovering the local color is a defining part of the stay. A boat ride up the Black River to see crocodiles or to jump off a jungle rope swing hanging down 30 feet in the air into that same river, playing dominoes with the locals at the corner bar in town, listening to ragae at Jake's, a fine dinner of Miss Vannessa's lobster salad, lunch at the Pelican Bar (right out of "Survivor"), it's all there for the taking. So much to discover.Recommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.

What a wonderful time we had at the Hikaru last week. Staying at the Hikaru made our one week vacation feel like two. The property was amazing. Quiet, private and lushly landscaped, we felt like movie stars in our own secluded oasis. We divided our days between the pool, private beach and lounging areas...such decisions! The staff were excellent. We were treated to some of the best Jamaican food we have ever eaten. We are counting the days until we book again. Thank you for the wonderful memories.Owner response: Miss Venesia, MIss Elesha and Mr. Patrick loved having you. We hope you'll come again soon, and that many others will heed your advice and come too.

We had the perfect set up for a relaxing getaway with two small children. The staff are exceptional and we felt welcome. Miss Venesia, Miss Elesha and Mr. Patrick are part of what makes this vacation extra special. My children are still talking about the coconut that Mr. Patrick picked for them and subsequently cracked open for them to consume! The food was very good, the house clean and spacious. The pool and the ocean front are perfect for little ones. 80% of the time we had the ENTIRE beach to ourselves! Staying in the community and meeting the locals was enjoyable. There was a little convenience store just down the road and we felt very safe in the community. The owners were very accomodating and informative. There were brochures to contact the local tour company (which we did). I might suggest an updated travel guide on Jamaica if you plan on doing any self-directed sightseeing. No TV, no air conditioning (the breeze off the ocean made the villa quite comfortable). The internet and local telephone were down while we were there, as well as a couple of very short-lived power outages. None of these things affected us as we were mostly outside. If you need a booming nightlife, lots of people, and all your electronic gadgetry...this location may not be for you. If you want a quiet, laid-back destination where you will be well-cared for, Hikaru is ideal. We will be recommending this place to others.Owner response: Thank you for your kind words; I'll be sure Miss Venesia, Miss Elesha and Mr. Patrick get on line to see them. Sorry about the line outages; wish we could do something to avoid them. I think you hit an unusual week. Do come again!

Coming here, we knew it would be short; we knew the last day would come quickly. Now it’s here, and we don’t want to leave. This is an absolute gem of a property. Miss Venesia, Miss Elesha, Mr. Patrick all worked to make our stay restful, delightful and warm – true Jamaican hospitality, true Treasure Beach kindness and caring. Thank you for a wonderful stay!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/1

We enjoyed the stay in the Villa very much, with the nice vieuw and lovely weather. It is a relaxing place with kind staff wo are treating you with a lot of warmth and care. The area is also relaxed and we didn't have problems with crime or people who are trying to sell you souvenirs. We had love cooked meals and realy enjoyed our stay. Our vacation at Villa Hikaru exceeded all of my expectations. The South Coast is quiet and friendly. Here you are treated like you are one of the family. The villa was perfect. A beautiful terrace overlooking the sea. We seemed to spend most of our time there. Spacious enough so in a group of 6 like ours, there was always a place to find some privacy. Miss Vanesia is a fabulous cook. We looked forward to every meal!! The staff couldn't have been more kind. How lucky we were to find such a special place. Thank you Don Noel - and all your friends at Treasure Beach.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/1

We needed a vacation that would suit our entire family. We have older teens, a ten year old and ourselves the parents. Hikaru met all of our needs and surpassed our expectations! The house and property are clean, beautiful, and private. We swam right off our own beach, in the beautiful private pool right on the property, and prepared our 16 year old daughter for tennis tryouts on the private tennis court. The staff treated us with respect and kindness and lovely sit downs meals (I did not cook or wash a dish for a week). We took tours with the a lovely driver who was a wonderful guide went to dinner at a fabulous outdoor restaurant in the neighborhood and had time to really relax as a family. If you are looking for something off the beaten track and want to get to know some lovely local Jamaican people as well as relax then this is the vacation spot for you! We felt like we really left our world and entered another.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Hikaru was amazing. The sunshine, beach and graciously warm company made it a paradise. I’ll never forget the friendly faces and the sound of the ocean as it put me to sleep and gently pulled me to wake every morning. This is a little piece of heaven that I will always cherish in my memories.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, people with disabilities, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Enjoy Rose's experience. Cognizant of rising air fares, we're holding 2008 rental rates into 2009

My wife and I joined the owners and four others for a delightful week at Hikaru in February/March of 2007. The house and grounds were well kept, the food was delicious, and the opportunities for a wide variety of activities were excellent. We took short trips to visit the YS Falls, to take a boat ride on the Black River nearby, and to Lover's Leap Restaurant on cook's night off. We particularly enjoyed walking the beach, swimming in the pool, and relaxing conversations on the veranda after dinner. Staff consisted of a cook/manager, a cook's helper, and a general handyman.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1972
About the owner: I'm a retired journalist in Hartford Connecticut; my wife Elizabeth Brad Noel is a retired educator. We stumbled on Treasure Beach, on a friend's advice, in 1965. We kept going back to this little string of fishing villages -- unspoiled then, and still unspoiled. In 1972 we built our own house. (You can read the first chapter of my memoir of that multi-year process at my book website; Google for 'Near A Far Sea'.
Why the Owner Chose Treasure Beach:
It is easy to make friends with fishermen in our area, and we did. The area has remained relatively undeveloped because the South Coast is in a 'rain shadow': the northeast trades wring themselves out on the mountain spine, so we have half as much rain as Ocho Rios. For many years, we relied largely on rain caught on the rooftop. Large-scale hotels just weren't possible. Piped water arrived a few years ago, but tourist development has been blessedly slow.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
The house accommodates up to eight -- but when one wants to be alone, there are a half-dozen places to sit, birdwatch, read or just contemplate the Caribbean
