Location: Treasure Beach, Jamaica, Caribbean (70 Mils by Paved Road from Montego Bay) View Map
Accommodations: Villa, 4 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps 8)
Villa Hikaru sits on a high sandy knoll with a sweeping view of the Caribbean just beyond our pool and court. It's a fishing village, with only a half-dozen tourist facilities in our half-mile scallop of Treasure Beach.
You can visit with neighbors as they prepare to go to sea 50 miles offshore, or photograph as they return with the catch. Read more about the area in my Jamaican memoir, "Near A Far Sea".

Map & Owner's Profile
Staffed Beachfront Villa on Jamaica's Unspoiled South Coast
Year Purchased: 1972
Why the Owner Chose Treasure Beach
It is easy to make friends with fishermen in our area, and we did. The area has remained relatively undeveloped because the South Coast is in a "rain shadow": the northeast trades wring themselves out on the mountain spine, so we have half as much rain as Ocho Rios. For many years, we relied largely on rain caught on the rooftop. Large-scale hotels just weren't possible. Piped water arrived a few years ago, but tourist development has been blessedly slow.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa
Most of Jamaica has become tourist beaches that barely tolerate fishermen; ours is a fishing village that welcomes tourists -- a big difference. Add to that a housekeeper who is a superb cook, a coral reef that invites exploration when the sea is calm, a private tennis court and 50-foot lap pool, a stunning sea vista, and an acre and a quarter planted with tropical flowers and fruits -- and we have a little bit of serene relaxation and enjoyment.
Owner's Map of Treasure Beach
I'm a retired journalist in Hartford Connecticut; my wife Elizabeth Brad Noel is a retired educator. We stumbled on Treasure Beach, on a friend's advice, in 1965. We kept going back to this little string of fishing villages -- unspoiled then, and still unspoiled. In 1972 we built our own house. (You can read the first chapter of my memoir of that multi-year process at my book website, www.nearafarsea.com)
