Family reunion gathering.. OK & TX & MA

Guest: MLE (OK & TX & MA)
Date of Stay: 05/02/12 Review Submitted: 05/20/12

We were able to maximize the reunion time we had together whether we were staying in or going out! Perfectly located between the Strand and the Seawall, the historic structure is a lovely, well appointed home away from home. The owners have anticipated everything to assure a comfortable and relaxing stay. In 5+ days we did not even come close to exhausting places to walk, interesting things to see and do, or the tempting variety of places to eat. We are all ready to return to Galveston to take up where we left off and explore the abundant opportunities for food, fun, adventures and family time within a comfortable walk from an exceptional home provided by Dawn and her family!!

Great place to stay, very nice and helpful owner, definetly the perfect place to spend holidays! The house is beautifully restored and the location, a few blocks from the beach and downtown, is perfect. We stayed 12 days with family from France, and they enjoyed this historical house.

Great Weekend

Great location and beautiful home. 7 of us spent 3 day weekend here. We were all pleased with our stay and would definitely return. The owner is very helpful and quick to respond to inquiries. The home is well maintained and just as pictured. The beds are little firmer than what we're used to but after busy day, slept well. We enjoyed sitting on porch and experiencing the neighborhood. Good price for so much space.

We are group of radiologic technology students that came down for a convention in The Woodlands and to spend the rest of our visit in Galveston. We couldn't have asked for more in a vacation rental. Staying at this home was absolutely wonderful. Dawn and her family have the house stocked with any and every thing one could think of. The antiques and knick-knacks placed around the house were so neat. We only got one day of decent weather and spent that walking around the neighborhood and down the the beach. That was the high light of our vacation. Will definitly be coming back again and will recommend to any one.

We came to Galveston with 2 other couples for Mardi Gras. This was a perfect place to stay. The house was charming and clean. The owner was very nice and informative when we made our reservation. I was concerned about being across from a neighborhood bar and grill. Sonny's was such a neat place. We left Mardi Gras to hang with them as they were so friendly. I look forward to staying at this home again.

Owner response:Thank you! Sonny's is such a treat, I knew you would enjoy. It has been there about 70 years with the same owners and is located on the bottom floor of a huge house. The owner, Jr. and his son, Larry are so enjoyable to talk with. They know everything about Galveston. All the locals love it, because it is such a family place. His motto has always been "behave or begone". If you would like more info, just Google Sonny's in Galveston. Lots of info written from newspapers and magazines far and wide!

Loved this House!

This home was truly incredible; beautifully re-done. It was like stepping back in time! My 17 year old walked in and said, "This house is really cool!!" And it was. The owners did a fantastic job bringing this home back to life. But they have really gone the extra mile, making sure that everything a visitor could need/want is there. You are walking distance from the water and close to all of Galveston's attractions. Every step of the process was easy and the owner does a fantastic job following up and making sure you have what you need. I would highly recommended this home!

This home was perfect for my family! I have always wanted to stay in a historical home in Galveston and this was a great experience. The house is filled with antiques yet still very kid friendly. I didn't feel like I constantly needed to guard my one year old. He played throughout the house with the older kids and had lots of fun. The bedrooms were big with comfy beds and lots of room for your bags and clothes. The kitchen has everything you need including condiments for meals and the table fit everyone. The porch was nice too because we sat out there and watched the older kids play at the park across the street. We cant wait until next year when we can come back.

Our family vacation

This home was the perfect home for our family vacation. The warmth and charm reminded me of visiting my grandparents home as a child. The location was perfect-my husband & I enjoyed driving around looking at the homes that have been renovated since hurricane Ike. We were close to the beach as well as to the Strand. Plans are already being made to return during the Christmas season and we are hoping to return to this same home.

The house was fabulous!!! We really appreciated the "extras" such as the washer and dryer, detergent, boogie boards, beach chairs, exterier hose, etc. You don't find those things in a hotel room. There were 7 of us that went to Galveston and we would have had to get 2 hotel rooms. We all had plenty of space. The bath towels were big and fluffy. The house was spotless. If we vacation in Glaveston again, we will definitely book this house and recommend it to others.

True Feel of Galveston in it's Bones!!

Guest: aaspender (Bandera, Texas)
Date of Stay: 07/12/11 Review Submitted: 07/22/11

My family of five stayed here, including our 4 year old. Our visit was Tues-Sat. Hot and humid on the island. This home was a dream for a vacation stay on the island. Centrally located in a historic neighborhood you just feel part of the island. We had spent our Monday night at the Galvez for the same price and although that was nice it cannot compare. The level of detail in the home to ensure comfort is perfect. After you get over the initial shock of how immaculate everything is and relax you feel like you are in your own home (except it is perfect). The home is tastefully decorated in simple Victorian w/ a nice mix of antiques and modern furniture. The linens on the comfortable beds (I am trying to find the set on the master bed for my master bedroom) to the ease of use in the well appropriated kitchen. We felt relaxed and really enjoyed using all the space. Not crammed in some hotel or theme B+B. There are books in the library area to bring the island history alive and a nice local resturant right across the street. The house and it is very breezy and cool. relaxing porch. The playscape across the street is as another reviewer said, the biggest ever. My child was in heaven. She also got to play with local kids and by the time we left she was saying "There are kids at my park, lets go see who came!". If you are coming to Galveston to get a feel for the place I advise you skip the condo's, hotels etcetera. This is the real deal. I used to live in the area and have been to the island a hundred times but have never really got it, I mean the amazing history and historic efforts to preserve homes such as this one. Dawn the owner is easy to work with and makes sure you are happy when you get there. Enjoy your stay!!

We've stayed at a few VRBOs and this was one of the most comfortable and clean. Perfect locaton to go to the Strand and the beaches. We will be back, what a wonderful way to back in time and still have the comforts of todays amenities. Loved your place Dawn and the time talking with you.

What a Great Find!

Guest: Chris M.
Date of Stay: 06/20/11 Review Submitted: 06/25/11

My wife and I strategically planned a getaway to Galveston after our daughter's wedding, and this home made it the perfectly relaxing experience we needed. We were able to do some fun things on the island like visting the Lone Star Flight Museum, riding the Port Bolivar ferry and going to the Rain Forest at Moody Gardens, along with a healthy balance of quiet time and sleeping late in a beautifully restored historic home. This is exactly what we needed. We also tried a couple of good local restaurants - Sonny's, which is directly across the street (with their Tex-Mex spaghetti, cold beer and good conversation), and M&M's (with their fresh gulf shrimp). Dawn is a great host, and called to make sure we had everything we needed after we arrived. Our experience made us feel like we have a new vacation home in Galveston, and we can't wait to go back.

This home is just as it appears in the pictures. It is immaculately clean, beautifully decorated, and very comfortable with all the things your family would need for a beach vacation home base. It was really neat staying in a historical house with so much of the home being original. It is also such a great location--blocks away from the Seawall beaches, the Strand, gorgeous downtown historical homes, many restaurants, retail, etc. Easy access to the highway as well for destinations on the mainland. Beds were very comfortable. We loved our experience at this home and in Galveston and we plan on returning soon.

We just returned from a family celebration in Galveston for my daughter's UTMB graduation. What a FABULOUS trip! The home is convenient for visits to the beach or downtown restaurants & shopping. It is beautifully decorated and well equipped - we were easily able to cook or bring in meals or walk to restaurants. Also plenty of seating for visiting, playing cards, reading or watching tv in the living room which "opens" to the library. Perfect for extended families. Can't wait to come back with friends for a little get-away. Thanks Dawn for sharing your lovely home with us.

Guest: Tania (Austin, TX)
Date of Stay: 04/29/11 Review Submitted: 05/06/11

We brought my parents, in-laws and 1 year old daughter to stay at this home over a weekend. Since the weather in Galveston can be quite iffy, I didn't want to stay right on the beach in case we had to stay indoors or forgo the beach altogether. This house surpassed everyone's expectations. It was very convenient to everything (family friendly beach, restaurants, shops) by car, but we could also take nice walks to check out the homes in the neighborhood and see the Bishop's Castle. Our baby slept very well in the crib that was provided (although it is quite old, so if your baby is super active during naps, I'd suggest bringing a pack n play). We were very pleased with the service and cleanliness of the home. It really made our weekend.

Comfortable, beautiful and classically charming

Guest: Rich & Janet (Houston, TX)
Date of Stay: 04/08/11 Review Submitted: 04/21/11

Not your standard beach or bay house, this beautifully restored Victorian is centrally located with very easy access to the Strand historic district, very accessible to East and West beaches. If the walls could talk they'd have some harrowing stories about the storms of 1900 and 2008 (Ike), and who knows what else! Today it's nicely furnished in period decor but with all the modern amenities you'd expect, including a well-equipped kitchen, comfortable beds. Great spot if you don't need a view of the water. Situated across the street from a city park/playground, this could be a plus for families with small children. Owners keep the property in great shape and are attentive and easy to work with.

My family and I stayed over the Christmas holidays. I'm originally from Galveston and wanted to spend Christmas with my mother and sister who live in a tiny place on the island. This home was perfect for us. Dawn decorated the house for us, which was fantastic for our 5 year old granddaughter! Her home easily accommodated 9 of us for Christmas dinner. There was NOTHING that was lacking in this home!!! We easily walked to both the beach and the downtown/Strand area. We would HIGHLY recommend this home and would absolutely stay there again. The description is accurate, the photos are exactly the same, everything was very clean and well-maintained.

Thankful for this Rental!

Date of Stay: 11/23/10 Review Submitted: 11/28/10

My daughter and son-in-law are living in Galveston while he attends medical school. We thought it would be fun to come to them this year for Thanksgiving, I rented this beautiful home for the occasion. The sleeping arrangements were just right for our group of six staying at the house. We came down a little early to make preparations for the Thanksgiving meal and were very pleased with everything that was available... a turkey roasting pan and a turkey platter, plenty of pots and pans, and even a pie plate. We brought a few things that we needed, but the house had most everything we needed to cook and serve a great meal. The dining room is huge and easily accomodated our group of 9 people on Thanksgiving Day. The house was already decorated for the holidays and we were very impressed with the skills of the owner and the attention to detail in every area of he house. The pictures on this website cannot possibly do this house justice! The thought and love that has gone into this house made us feel like the owners had put out their best for special guests coming to stay in their home. The only difference was that we had the house to ourselves for our group. Dawn was only a phone call away and happy to answer any questions we had to make sure we had what we needed for the celebration. Everyone is already asking about next year. If we decide to have a family celebration in Galveston again, we will rent this place. I can't imagine any rental that could be better, on or off the island.

MARVELOUS FIND!

Guest: Dawn (Houston Texas)
Date of Stay: 09/03/10 Review Submitted: 09/08/10

Having used vrbo several times in the past, we kind of knew what to expect...wrong!!! This home far surpasssed our expectations. Dawn was a pleasure to work with and her home was tops in cleanliness, supplies, ambience, and convenience. The home's listing was accurate although far too humble. The location is surperb and the playscapes across the street is a wonderful place for children. The home is in a quiet safe neighborhood in between the seawall and the Strand....just perfect. So many times the photos are not current...not here...everything was as shown. The bedding was absolutely dreamy! With the exception of Fishtales, we decided to eat off the Seawall area on this trip to Galveston. We ate at Sonnys (across the street), Mosquito Cafe, Sunflower Bakery, the original Drug store in the Strand, Original Mexican Cafe, Yaga's, and Greek Cajun (recommended by next door neighbor and the flounder was out of this world). We really got hooked on the Sunflower Bakery for breakfast! We will be back!!!!! This is definitely a teasured find!

My Mom and I enjoyed our stay in August, 2010. We were celebrating life and wanted to stay somewhere beautiful, peaceful and clean. This home was all that and more. I couldn't have asked for nor found a cleaner or better maintained home. Sipping a glass of wine on the front porch watching the beautiful sunset while dinner was cooking was so relaxing. The house was beautifully appointed and the accommodations were as comfortable as they were beautiful. We hope to return soon. Sandra and Nancy

Perfect for families! Great location in town, and such a beautiful historic home!

Guest: Julie (Austin, TX)
Date of Stay: 07/17/10 Review Submitted: 07/22/10

We've been to Galveston many times, but this is our first time to stay in town at a historic house. We'll be back! The property is located perfectly between the Seawall and the Strand -- close to EVERYTHING. The house itself is nicely appointed with period furniture, quality linens, towels, etc. Everything you could possibly need is in the kitchen -- dinnerware as well as most of the staples (sugar, coffee filters, etc.). The dining table seats six. There is ample space in the front rooms (living room + study) for six adults to relax and chat. The wifi is FAST, and Dish Network comes in clear on the TV. The three bedrooms are upstairs and are all large, with comfy beds and tons of pillows! The downstairs study has a pull-out bed, and doors that close for privacy -- so it can be used as a 4th bedroom. The bathrooms are clean and big, with great water pressure, and plenty of hot water. Outside is a big front porch. In the back, there's off-street parking for two cars. The landscaping is pretty and obviously very well maintained. Across the street is a HUGE playscape. One of the biggest I've never seen. My 3.5 year old daughter fell in love. Needless to say, we'll return for the playscape alone -- but the house is so wonderful, we'd be back regardless. Also across the street is a joint called Sonny's Place that is popular with locals. Sadly, we didn't make it over there because it was closed Sun-Mon -- two of our four days in Galveston. Still, I'd suggest checking it out. Our favorite restaurants are Mosquito Cafe (brunch, lunch, and dinner -- creative and FRESH dishes with a new menu every day), and The Spot (a sports-bar vibe on the Seawall with great views of the Gulf). We also had a blast watching a cruise ship depart from the harbor, at Pier 21. We were treated by a spontaneous display of dolphins frolicking in the harbor! The owners of this house are so friendly, accommodating, and gracious! They're super easy to work with, and very responsive to questions. The house was immaculately clean when we arrived, and they called within the first hour of our arrival to make sure we were settling in well. The house is every bit as pretty as the photos show. I would recommend it to anyone, from my closest friend to a total stranger! Thank you so much, Dawn, Tom, and Ryan!

The location, layout, and atmosphere of "A Bygone Era" could not have been more perfect! We loved the historical highlights and the beautiful renovation job done on the house. The decor and preservation of the original hardwoods, framed original wallpaper remnants, etc. were special touches that helped set the tone of the vacation for us. The house was also impeccably clean, everything freshly laundered, and easy to live in during our weekend. We especially appreciated the crib and crib linens provided at the house - no need to bring the uncomfortable pack-n-play for our daughter! Dawn was incredibly gracious, making sure our stay was as comfortable as possible. The house was within walking distance to the beach and the Strand, with cute little shops and lots of restaurants. The park across the street was also great for us and our little girl, and although we didn't try Sonny's next door, we will have to try it next time we visit after reading all the great comments in the guest book at the house! We will definitely recommend "A Bygone Era" to our friends, and would love to stay there again ourselves in the future. My only little tips: Would be nice to have some spare toiletries (soap, lotion, etc.) in the bathrooms in case people forget anything, and maybe some robes? But other than that, everything was absolutely wonderful!!! Thank you!!!

Lovely Historic Home~

Date of Stay: 03/14/10 Review Submitted: 03/28/10

We flew down with our 2 college age children to visit our other son who lives in Houston. We had such a relaxing and comfortable time in this home. The home was just as the pictures show online -- lovely! Location was perfect for walks to the beach and to the historic downtown. We purchased a Galveston Historic Walking Tour Book and started 3 mornings by taking a different walking tour -- many routes to the cool historic homes and buildings were near this neighborhood . We all enjoyed the many areas in the house or on the porch where we could read or enjoyed sitting around the dining room table playing cards in the evening. Our 20-something kids were relieved to have access to cable and internet and enjoyed walking to the downtown coffee shop to do schoolwork for a few hours a couple of the days. :) A perfect family vacation!

We stayed in this lovely historic home from 1/3/10 to 2/10/10. It was such a great floor plan and so nicely equipped, and decorated that my husband and i agreed that it would be a wonderful year round house. That's how comforable we were. We highly recommend this rental.

My family and friends stayed in this home Labor Day Weekend 2009. The house was beautiful, very clean, and had all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. We were able to bring our dog along for the vacation as well. This place is also in a great location. We will definitely be back in the future.

We stayed here in July 2009, and it was beautiful! The house is truly lovely, Dawn has thought of absolutely everything, and the furnishings really put you into the bygone era of Galveston. The location is very convenient to everywhere in the town, and the kids enjoyed the park right across the street. Hopefully we will be back often!

We stayed here over Easter 2009. The house has been fully restored after IKE and has all the facilities needed for a great holiday. Easy walk to the beach and plenty of shops within an easy drive. Only about an hour to NASA. The front porch gets the evening sun and is ideal for sipping evening drinks, The house is larger than its photos show. Would stay there again if in the vicinity

My family gathered at this beautiful house in Galveston's historic district over the Christmas season in 2008. It was very comfortable for us and those who visited while we were there. We entertained multiple groups of family and friends from GA, WA, NY and TX while there and all were impressed. It was less than 10 minutes to walk to the seawall and beach and excellent stores were within 15 minutes drive. We heartily recommend this house and would definitely consider it again on a visit to this area. The owner was most helpful in providing information in advance of our visit, especially considering the impacts of hurricane Ike. The home was immaculately restored following the hurricane, because we could not detect any hint of impact while we were there.

We began to stay at this house i 2008, just after Ike had hit. The bike rally was delayed and a friend found this house. After seeing houses online I was skeptical, but was soon reassured when we arrived. This is now our home away from home, we (a group of friends) come to Galveston twice a year and we always stay here. Dawn is wonderful to work with and always considerate of her renters and accommodating them. I can't think of any other way to spend a weekend or vacation than at this house. I only wish it had a pool, but you can't have everything. Dawn, thank you, for everything you do, we love this house, see ya soon. Galveston Bound!
