Hale Manu, which means the "Bird House", is our larger two-bedroom guesthouse (sorry, we are an adults only property and do not take children). You will wake up to the sounds and sights of the various tropical birds, as well as the beautiful and expansive ocean view and sunrise. The spacious Hawaiian styled architecture includes open beamed, vaulted ceilings, a large center cupola for great airflow and an open floor plan. Over time, we have completely renovated and professionally decorated the home (most recently in 2008), including a large fully equipped kitchen (a kitchen inventory is available on our website), an all tile bathroom with new fixtures, queen sized beds and a large lanai with teak steamer chairs, gas barbeque and table for outdoor dining under the stars and by the light of the tiki torches provided. The ocean facing bedrooms are conducive to romantic sultry evening breezes.
We take a lot of pride in our homes, as is evident from the many comments provided by previous guests (please see our online guestbook accessible below). Hale Manu is thoughtfully furnished with a fun vintage Hawaiian flair, including a beautifully refurbished 1930's vintage rattan living room set we found and shipped all the way from a small Texas town and original oil paintings by local Hana artists. Sink yourself into the chaise and grab a book off the bamboo shelves to relax the night away or choose a DVD from the small collection we supply. We also have a collection of coffee table books about Hawaii and Polynesia and, since the home is the “bird house” we have bird books, binoculars and a telescope for the avid bird watchers. We have done our best to consider all the details, like high-thread count, all cotton linens, handmade local soaps, coffee and green tea for your first day and for those of you who need to stay connected, we have high speed wireless internet access and unlimited, free mainland United States phone service. We also have the modern conveniences such as a washer/dryer, microwave and more.
Hale Manu is perched at the rear of our fully landscaped, two-acre property, providing PRIVACY. Since we live at the front of the property, we work diligently to maintain our homes and provide excellent accommodations. We are also available to answer questions about Hana and steer you in the right direction to your ultimate vacation, whether that means an active time snorkeling, surfing, horseback riding and hiking or just relaxing at the nearby beaches and swimming holes. Hamoa Beach, considered the nicest in town, is just minutes away. We provide boogie boards, snorkeling equipment, beach chairs, beach towels, beach mats, a beach umbrella and a cooler. We can also direct you to local in-house massage therapists or to the local spa for pampering.
The Guest Houses at Malanai are named after the gentle cooling breeze, (named Malanai) known for this area of Hana. We are located just three miles (a five minute drive) outside of Hana Town in the Maka’alae district, which is considered the most highly desired area of Hana. You are sure to fall in love with the picturesque and pastoral landscape, the ever-changing ocean colors and the gentle sound of the waves lulling you to sleep at night. We hope you choose Hale Manu at the Guest Houses at Malanai for your dream vacation in the islands! Please see our website for details on our EXTREMELY competitive rates and policies and feel free to email us with any questions.

We stayed at Hale Manu on 2/27-3/1/2010 and it was wonderful! The day we were to arrive in Hana ended up being the day the tsunami warning was sounded. Naturally it made for a very long day trying to make our way to Hana! Chris and Leokane both called us during the day to make sure we were planning on making the trip & to let us know that the house was set for our arrival no matter how late we might be. The house and grounds were even better than we imagined and Hana was wonderful! Our hosts were kind and considerate and we even got to see Leokane perform at the Hotel before we left. I would recommend Hana and the Guesthouses at Malanai to anyone that loves peace and relaxation in a beautiful setting. Mahalo for sharing your slice of heaven with us we will genuinely never forget it!

We enjoyed our stay at Hale Manu. It is very comfortable, well appointed and maintained and spacious. The kitchen is well equipped and the many tropical touches were fun. The welcoming flowers and slack key guitar music set the tone. The guest houses are well located and convenient to town, beaches and hiking. We enjoyed the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Hana with it's massive heiau (temple) and our tasting tour of Ono organic farms in nearby Kipahulu.

Aloha Chris and Leokane, We had a fantastic experience at Hale Manu. The weather was beautiful, and the location was perfect. Walking distance to so many great spots. The kitchen had everything we needed and more. Even a portable cooler - perfect for the beach! Y'all did an amazing job decorating the place, and we loved flipping though all the fun books at hand. The beds were also very comfortable. And what a treat to have a washer and dryer at hand. That was big help and is almost impossible to find at other rentals. I hope it won't take another 15 years to make it back to Hana, but when we do, we'll certainly know the best place to stay. Thanks again! Haven and Travis

Nov 12-14 2009 Had an amazing time at the "Bird House". We cooked on the deck, cuddled in bed with views of the ocean, and spent two great days exploring Hana. And what a location! It's an easy walk to Hamoa Beach, as well as the Venus Pools, and closer to the State Park (location of the seven sacred pools) than the hotels in town. Plus, it's cozy and warm and a great place for any type of travel. When we return to Hana we wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else. Thanks! Michael and Kira

loved every moment of it. your place is almost exactly like one that i would buy-if we could afford it. we spent 5 great-if a little humid-days there, all our needs were provided for. the only problem was...i never got to see the pig! thanks for the place and the conversation, chris and leokane, maybe some day we will all stop having the "college dream.".

This was our 1st visit to Maui and we were fortunate to find this gem for 5 nights. Hale Manu is a wonderful location & property with especially accommodating owners. Great place for quiet, relaxed getaway – bonus if you enjoy fresh avocados, they are available daily right outside the door! Only real obstacle on road from the airport was a freshly fallen tree that we were able to remove with the help of another dozen travelers. Would suggest renting a small vehicle as we chose a full size car and that was a tight fit on a few stretches. Another plus was the wireless internet which allowed my wife to conduct a 2 hour business meeting. Very comfortable mattress and a gourmet kitchen setup. Also, appreciated the availability of body boards, beach chairs, and other swim gear. Weather was a pleasant mixture of sunlight and tropical rains during our stay. Highlight was visiting the Waimoku Falls which were running full and majestic and the Seven Pools, which unfortunately were “flooded” making it impressive to see, but off limits for swimming that day. Already looking forward to coming back. Mahalo, Chris.

Our family of 4 had a great time in this beautiful part of the world, in this incredibly thoughtfully designed house. The warm hosts made sure that we were sent when a hurricane threatened power outages and havoc (it didn't happen. What we'll remember are all the details that they put into making this place, the beautiful music we heard Leokane play up the road one night, and their personal attention to our happiness.

What a wonderful little slice of Heaven on Earth! We all enjoyed the quietness of Hana along with our fun-loving host-dogs, Kimo, Pearl and Bailey. Escaping the heat of Arizona and feeling the cool Hana breezes at night was soothing to our spirits. We thank you so much for the wonderful accommodations...including the Hawaiian music playing when we arrived. Leokane's CD has become one of my favorites! Mahalo nui loa...Sherry Clack

Mahalo to Leokane and Chris for offering their wonderful home to us and our girls. Hana was a perfect getaway in Maui and offered a great variety of swims in lava pools, waterfalls and great beaches (Hamoa in particular!) The house was comforting and relaxing, well-stocked and a peaceful place to enjoy the beautiful surrounds. We even enjoyed the ripe avocados and passionfruit on the property! When we come back to Hana, we will certainly wish to stay here again!

Leokane and Chris have a really peaceful, well- located and nicely taken care-of property. Their kitchen had everything needed, they had all kinds of beach gear to use, and the local dogs who come to get to know you are friendly and fun. The two- bedroom Hale Manu was the perfect size for my wife, daughter and me. We had a perfect four days.
