Step back to life 200 years ago. This ancient colonial town of Patzcuaro is just like stepping into the past. Hillside streets with shops and vendors blanket the town. There are three plazas which to stroll and watch the slow pace of the residents. Cobbled streets and strict town regulations limit the building and decorating to strict historical details. Our home is just five minutes away, toward the towns of Opopeo and Santa Clara del Cobre, which is know for it's copper artisans and handwork.
Rancho Cañon is situated in the center of 25 acres of pine and oak trees. The property is divided in half by a deep canyon and that’s how we came up with the name for the property. Pine trees that tower over one hundred feet will shade you in the hottest time of the day. One of the reasons we chose this location is that the temperature never exceeds 80 degrees during the summer or 30 degrees during the winter. The ranch elevation is 8000 feet so be prepared for some huffing and puffing if you take the forest walking paths, until you get used to the elevation.
Two year new, dramatic, Santa Fe-style, modern, two bedroom home was designed for elegance and comfort. This 3500 square foot, single-floor setup with a courtyard, fountain, and gardens. There are two outside living areas. The morning sun greets you on the kitchen/canyon side patio. Where you can sit watching the more than 100 species of birds sing and feed from our over 15 feeders on the site. The 18 feet tall beamed ceilings in the family/dining rooms will give you the feeling of a mountain lodge, especially if you build your fire in the efficient wood fireplace! In the living room is where you can view a large three feet diameter Aztec Calendar that is the centerpiece above the fireplace. The room is also filled with antiques, original art, and other decorations from various areas of Mexico and South America.
A 16 x 26 foot, gourmet kitchen with a 12 foot marble center island, and 6 foot commercial stove will allow even the most basic cook to master food preparation from the local fruits and vegetables. The kitchen was set up to hold cooking classes, which we offer six times a year. You can use the various spices and herbs, which we have, in your cooking or ask us for our ranch cookbook as guide to local cuisine and delicacies. Daily shopping is an experience you can get accustomed to. It really becomes a social event. Your morning starts at the local market, picking and choosing only the freshest items at ridiculously low prices. Imagine only paying 25 cents for an avocado that brings about $2 in the states. The avocado growing capital of the world is about 30 miles away. Watercress for that soup is 30 cents a bunch, and a kilo (2lbs) of fresh tortillas runs about 75 cents. Compare that with prices at your local A&P.
If you’re looking for a quiet space then choose from one in the gardens or in any of the bedrooms. You can listen to the stereo or CD player. We also have over 50 channels of DMX music, which we receive from the US on our large satellite dish. Each bedroom has its own couch and fireplace. You can be by yourself or retire early while other guests are still operating the blender, rating one of the many margarita recipes we include in our recipe book. The sleep arraignments in the main house offer a King-size bed in the master bedroom and a queen in the second bedroom. Each bedroom has its own walk-in shower and the master bedroom bathroom has a Jacuzzi tub.
In the separate guest Casita across the driveway, you will find a large bedroom with queen bed, bath, and living room-kitchen, along with a refrigerator, full stove, and utensils. (Sleeps two.) This unit can be rented separately or together as a package. It has gas heat, no fireplace, but plenty of comfortable chairs and its own patio and garden area. Also there is another bedroom, which is adjacent to our service area, which is a well-decorated bedroom with heat, armoire, and queen bed. The bath is shared with another bedroom, which also doubles as a retreat classroom or meeting room. This room is 30 x 20 and can also be setup with 2 additional roll always if needed.
There are three separate garden areas, all with benches for sitting and enjoying, reading and bird watching. There is no time that the weather is nasty. From November to May is traditionally the non-rainy season. Daytime temperatures peak in the 80s and can drop to the mid 20s with frost on the plants and roadways. The rainy season starts around May and continues through the summer, offering an afternoon shower, and then having the sun come out and dry things up for another couple of days. Daytime temperatures again peak in the 80s and evening time brings temperatures to the 50s. If you are a Mother Nature fan, you can sit on the south patio, with a coffee or drink and enjoy seeing the sky light up with the light of distant electrical storms as they pass the area. If you’re lucky you can even hear thunder nearby. The property is fenced and gated. We have an onsite security 24 hours.
A washer and dryer are available for doing your own laundry. Bed linens are included as are towel and toiletries. Our water is pure and healthy. Its source is a mountain spring a few miles away. As a safety precaution we also treat it for whole property.
The Patzcuaro area is know for its Day of the Dead Celebrations. There are several islands at Lake Patzcuaro, with many tours and artisan colonies. A 30-minute drive brings you to the town of Uruapan, which has a national park with fantastic waterfalls, fountains, streams and rivers. The coast is only about 125 miles west of our location, but a long drive to the towns of Ixtapa and Playa Azul. Morelia is 30 minutes away, and offers Theaters, many museums shopping malls and a zoo. The volcano that buried a whole town is about one hour away and the Monarch Butterfly preserve is about one hour east of our location.
